While the original fort that Lancaster Lupton built has long been gone\, a dedicated group of individuals began in 2003 to reconstruct the fort. The reconstructed Fort Lancaster\, as it was known in its original period of operation\, 1836-1844\, was completed and dedicated in 2011.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nA visit to Lancaster Lupton’s trade fort is an experience of going back in time to when an individual with a vision and entrepreneurial spirit took risks to establish a trade enterprise on the wild prairie along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. By 1836 Lupton had resigned his commission and was bringing skilled craftsman and labor from the Mexican village of Taos north to build his trade fort. By 1837-38 he was trading with the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes. For five days on the last full weekend of February\, the calendar will be turned back more than 160 years\, when the Grizzly Mountain Longrifles\, a Prineville group of muzzleloader shooting enthusiasts\, holds its annual Horse Ridge Rendezvous. \nThe Horse Ridge Rendezvous will attract several hundred shooters from throughout Oregon\, and even from other states\, and in the tradition of the pre-1840 mountainman era\, most will be clad in buckskins\, furs\, calico\, and other period dress. \nShooting events include trail walks\, where shooters walk a trail\, pausing to shooter at each marked target. Rendezvous were known to be lively\, joyous places\, where all were allowed- free trappers\, Indians\, native trapper wives and children\, travelers and later on\, even tourists who would venture from even as far as Europe to observe the festivities. Rendezvous are still celebrated as gatherings of like-minded individuals or clubs in many walks of life. The fur trading rendezvous are celebrated by traditional black-powder rifle clubs all over the US and Canada. These gatherings range from small gatherings sponsored by local clubs to large gatherings like the Pacific Primitive Rendezvous and others. These gatherings include much of the same activities of the originals\, centering on the shooting of muzzle-loaded rifles\, trade guns and shotguns\, the throwing of knives and tomahawks and primitive archery\, as well as cooking\, dancing\, singing\, the telling of tall tales and of past rendezvous. Fort Atkinson hosts several living-history weekends a year that feature volunteers recreating the lives of the soldiers\, artisans\, and civilians that lived in and around the outpost. Interpretive hours are from 10am until 5pm on all living-history days. \nFort Atkinson\, the first military post west of the Missouri River\, is seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W. Years earlier\, the Lewis and Clark expedition’s historic first meeting with American Indians was held on its bluff. \nLife at an 1820s military post is depicted at this Fort Atkinson Living History Weekend in September and other  Living History Weekends at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park that take place from May through September each year. \nFrom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, volunteers will demonstrate period trades\, such as blacksmithing\, carpentry\, tinsmithing and coopering\, and crafts such as quilting\, spinning and weaving. Members of the American Mountain Men group will have an encampment on the grounds\, portraying the fur trappers who helped settle the region. There will be a presentation at 1 p.m. on both days by Mark W.
