William S. Foster and his 430 men. During the Second Seminole War the purpose of Fort Foster was to defend the bridge crossing at the Hillsborough River and act as a resupply point for the soldiers in the field. The Fort Foster was garrisoned on and off from December\, 1836 – April\, 1838. Although the fort was attacked on several occasions\, the worst attack occurred in February 1836\, when a small group of Seminoles attempted to set fire to the bridge. The attempt was thwarted by aggressive musket and cannon fire from the fifty or so U.S. Navy sailors and the 20 artillery men within the fort. Today\, park staff and reenactors provide living history demonstrations of life at Fort Foster. Each year\, the site offers two living history events: Fort Foster Rendezvous in January\, and the Candlelight Experience at Fort Foster in December. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Foster Rendezvous at Fort Foster State Historic Site in Thonotosassa\, Florida (generally on the last weekend of January). \nTags: Fort Foster Rendezvous\, Florida Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Florida Rendezvous \nView other Buckskinner Rendezvous

Located in Goliad\, or\, more accurately before 1829\, La Bahía\, lay on the important route from the Gulf of Mexico to San Antonio de Béxar. The presidio served as the customs house for Copano (El Cópano)\, established on Aransas Bay about the same time as San Antonio\, served as the principal port of entry. These three points were the key to control of South Texas. La Bahía had immense strategic importance\, since it guarded the supply line from the coast to the principal city. This new municipality owed its importance to the port of Copano\, forty miles distant\, which had begun to compete with Matamoros for the lucrative Mexican interior trade\, for which the new town of Goliad supplied expert smugglers\, as well as oxcarts and drivers who provided transportation between markets and port. \nAbout the Texas Association of Buckskinners\nTexas Association of Buckskinners is a friendly group that encourages period correct equipment and skills\, while helping new pilgrims get more involved in the hobby. The Texas Association of Buckskinners (TAB) began in the late 1970s when three friends who were interested in survivalism decided to put together a group to focus on survival skills based on the Mountain Men of the Western Fur Trade. After several decades\, it is one of the oldest buckskinning groups in Texas and is still going strong\, with events held the last weekend of January (Deep Winter)\, the third weekend in April (Spring) and the last weekend in October (Fall). New members are always welcome. \n \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Presidio La Bahia Christmas Rendezvous and Trade Fair on the first weekend of December at the Presidio La Bahia in Goliad\, Texas. \nTags: Christmas at the Presidio La Bahia Rendezvous\, Presidio La Bahia\, Texas Association of Buckskinners\, Texas Revolution Events\, Texas Rendezvous\, Texas Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Market Trade Fair \nView Other Texas Revolution Events\nView other Texas Rendezvous\nView other Market Fair & Trade Fair Events

The fur trade was the primary reason for the exploration of the American frontier and this enterprise was spurred on by the demand for pelts which were used to make the very expensive and extremely popular felt hats that were fashionable in Europe from 1550 to 1850. The fur trade began to decline when Europeans began to prefer silk hats and the beaver population began to decline. Although its influence isn’t directly apparent\, the fur trade had a profound effect on the growth of the European influence on North America. Routes trail blazed by fur trappers became the routes followed by the pioneers and fur trading outposts like St. Louis became cities. \nThe Grafton Rendezvous is a great place to either participate in the activities or just to experience some of America’s past firsthand. If you have any questions about anything you see\, just ask one of the reenactors. They have spent much time researching their persona\, and most are happy to share what they know. The Grafton Rendezvous is located on the Grafton waterfront at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Parking is plentiful and downtown Grafton is an easy walk from the site. \nGrafton Rendezvous Mini-Gallery\n\n \nPublic Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nCamping\nPre-1840 dress and camp required for the primitive area\nEarly setup on Wednesday\nNo camp fee or fee for demonstrators\nModern camping area separate\nFirewood\, Water\, Porta Potties and Trash Disposal will be provided \nTrader and Sutler Information\nTrade fees will apply: Blankets $10\, Food Vendors $50\, and Tent Traders $25\nBlanket Prize Entry: $15 value will be judged \nFor more information contact:\nCall Cindy Grizzle: 618-372-8672 or Ralph & Mary Mosby 618-258-7970\nEmail graftonrendezvous@gmail.com \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Grafton Rendezvous in Grafton\, IL on the third weekend of October on the banks of the Illinois River. \nTags: Grafton Rendezvous\, Grafton Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Illinois Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Illinois Rendezvous \nView other Illinois Rendezvous
