Competitions include traditional blackpowder shooting for rifles\, pistols\, trade guns\, and shotguns. All shooting\, except for shotguns\, is done on the trail. Regular aggregate includes the scores from the rifle\, pistol\, and the hawk and knife trails. Read the shooters’ rules you will receive at registration and receive bonus points. Additional activities such as the Fort Shoot\, Grub Shoot\, and shotgun match\, plus the “Fox shoot” offer other exciting and fun black powder shooting contests. \nEvergreen Muzzleloaders Fall Harvest Rendezvous Contests also include: Primitive Archery\, and the “Hunter’s Trail”\, which is where new shooters try their skills using just rifles. For the Hunter’s Trail shooters can use any muzzleloading hunting rifle with round ball or elongated bullets. Fort Connah was a Hudson’s Bay Trading Post established in 1846. One of the three original buildings still remains and is believed to be the oldest standing building in Montana. The fort was active from 1846 to 1871. Another cabin has been moved onto the property and renovated for administrative purposes\, historical artifacts and displays. An 1870s log cabin-building has also been moved to Fort Connah for renovation. These two cabins and the original building will replicate the buildings that once made-up the original trading post. With the wealth of local history in Western South Dakota and the release of Hollywood’s take on Glass with Alejandro Iñárritu’s critically acclaimed The Revenant starring Leonardo Dicaprio there’s no better time to take a trip into the past. \n\nHugh Glass Rendezvous\nThe Hugh Glass Rendezvous commemorates the legendary fur trapper and frontiersman’s story. Hugh Glass led a storied life at the beginnings of the 19th century. In the summer of 1823\, Glass as part of a fur trading party led by General Ashley\, was attacked by a grizzly bear along the shores of the Grand River at a point somewhere south of present day Lemmon SD. He fought the grizzly to the death\, eventually killing the animal. Badly wounded Glass was left in the care of fellow expedition members John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger till he either recovered or died while the expedition would move on. Though accounts vary on the specifics\, Fitzgerald and Bridger abandoned Glass\, either because they believed he was fatally wounded or because they were attacked by a Native American tribe and had to leave to escape. \nHugh Glass did not die that day however. Alone\, removed of all his gear and supplies\, Glass would make an astounding journey. South Park is approximately 950 square miles of rolling hills and meadows at approximately 10\,000 feet altitude. This region was a favorite trapping and wintering spot during the fur trade era. The site has beautiful with views of the mountains both South and West. We hope we are lucky enough to continue to use this site for years to come. This will be the 32nd Como Rendezvous. This historical place was the center of fur trade activity and the Native America Ojibwe heritage. The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. No food left outside\, etc. \nFire bans are often in effect this time of year\, o prepare for no wood fires. Propane is allowed. For current restrictions\, contact the Gallatin National Forest Service. Modern camping available in West Yellowstone. Showers\, laundry\, water and dump are 4 blocks away. One block to town and walking distance to many restaurants. \nVISITOR INFORMATION\nThe Smoking Waters Mountain Man Rendezvous is held in early August of each year\, lasting about 9 days. Storytelling is a favorite activity\, and not just for the kids. Musicians provide live entertainment\, and open fire cooking gives the food terrific flavor. Black powder shoots fascinate young and old\, and tomahawk and knife demonstrations hold a special thrill. Visitors begin to appreciate some of the challenges and dangers that existed in the days of the mountain men when they take part in some of the seminars held during this event. \nSmoking Waters Rendezvous Location\nOld Airport in West Yellowstone\, MT\nThe encampment can be spotted off of US 20 when coming from the southwest.
