Hugh Glass led a storied life at the beginnings of the 19th century. In the summer of 1823\, Glass as part of a fur trading party led by General Ashley\, was attacked by a grizzly bear along the shores of the Grand River at a point somewhere south of present day Lemmon SD. He fought the grizzly to the death\, eventually killing the animal. Badly wounded Glass was left in the care of fellow expedition members John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger till he either recovered or died while the expedition would move on. Though accounts vary on the specifics\, Fitzgerald and Bridger abandoned Glass\, either because they believed he was fatally wounded or because they were attacked by a Native American tribe and had to leave to escape. \nHugh Glass did not die that day however. Alone\, removed of all his gear and supplies\, Glass would make an astounding journey. The Como Mountain Man Rendezvous is held about 6 miles south of the town of Como\, Colorado. \n\nComo Mountain Man Rendezvous\nComo is located in South Park\, an intermontane grassland basin. South Park is approximately 950 square miles of rolling hills and meadows at approximately 10\,000 feet altitude. This region was a favorite trapping and wintering spot during the fur trade era. The site has beautiful with views of the mountains both South and West. We hope we are lucky enough to continue to use this site for years to come. This will be the 32nd Como Rendezvous. They have been held in the South Park region of Colorado all previous years. \nOur Como Mountain Man Rendezvous site is owned by the JBGardneRanch and is donated to us for this event by Amanda Woodbury. This historical place was the center of fur trade activity and the Native America Ojibwe heritage. The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. See the sights\, smell the smells and hear the sounds that haven’t been around for over 150 years. All of this is happening in the beautiful Encampment River Valley the last weekend in July at the Grand Encampment Museum. \nThere is no charge to visit this historic affair. Lots of beautiful spots are available for both primitive and modern camping free of charge. Trader’s fee is one donated prize. Drinking water\, some firewood and toilet facilities are on site. Dogs must be leashed (strictly enforced). No horses please. Fires are allowed with some restrictions. \nMany outstanding donated prizes will be awarded at the Black powder shoot. The prizes for the highest aggregate scores for both men and women will be $200 cash. This money was raised by the club. When the North West Company first arrived\, they built a trading post where the Indian population and the French explorers bartered for furs\, primarily beaver fur which was incredibly cherished among the European market. Fur traders traveled hundreds of miles and portaged in every direction anticipating the rendezvous\, also known as a meeting place where trading and bartering took place. After furs and other products\, were traded\, the furs were then carried along the Yellow River onto Montreal and then eventually to Europe. At the end of the 1805 trading season\, the fur traders loaded their canoes\, traveled along the Yellow River and never returned to Fort Folle Avoine. Trappers\, travelers and Native American Indians all gathered to barter\, sell and gamble away the pelts and skins they’d gathered through the winter from hard\, dangerous labor. All vehicles and modern equipment must be removed from the encampment area by 9:30 AM. Try all three activities or enjoy three rounds of your favorite activity!\nLooking for a perfectly patriotic overnight getaway to pair with Colonial Faire?[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nWhen is Colonial Faire?\nSet in Chesterfield\, New Hampshire in the year 1774\, Colonial Faire at Riley’s Farm takes place from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm on each Saturday in July\, plus July 4th. \nDaily Activities at Colonial Faire at Riley’s Farm\nEach day of Colonial Faire features a unique itinerary and special guest performers and these all-day activities for each event day: Tomahawk Throwing * Archery (ages 8+) * Candle Dipping * Culinary Arts & Kitchen Herbs * Modern Fashion * Calligraphy\, Papermaking\, and Printing * Blacksmithing * Colonial Games * Textile Arts: Spinning\, dyeing\, weaving * Animal Care * Weapons & Accoutrements * Broom Making * Old Soldier’s Tavern Encampment. \nBattle Note: Although the event will feature colonial militia muster and marching exercises\, this is not a battle re-enactment. There are also many hotels near Riley’s Farm. \n\n\nParking: Parking is free in any of the three available dirt lots. \nFruit Picking: Patrons who wish to pick fresh strawberries during the event should check in at the Colonial Mercantile before entering the patch to check daily crop status and purchase a berry picking container. \nFaire Re-Entry: Your wristband will guarantee re-admission to the fairegrounds if you need to leave and return later in the day. \nRV Parking available: Complimentary space for RV parking is available from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM on the day of the event. Overnight parking is available only to reenactors who are participating in the event’s period encampment. Vegetarian\, vegan\, and gluten-free foods are available for purchase in the Hawk’s Head Public House. \nCostumes: Many guests arrive in colonial attire\, but it is not required by any means. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and good walking shoes. Come dressed to play! Due to safety and insurance requirements all guests are required to wear shoes at all times. Note that some cast members may appear in bare feet for dramatic presentations on a limited basis. \nWeapons: Weapons brought for use with your costume are to be “peace-tied” and shall remain sheathed. Exposed steel is not permitted. You may bring your bow if it is unstrung\, or strung with yarn (or some other line that cannot hold tension). Arrows should be untipped. The constable will be on patrol to ensure public safety. \nWheelchair accessible: With the understanding that this event is held outdoors. We do not rent wheelchairs or scooters. \nPets: Due to the nature of the show\, the faire can be a high-stress environment for some animals and is not a suitable destination for household pets. Service animals under the ADA are welcome! \nSmoking: Due to high fire danger\, smoking is only permitted in the Colonial Chesterfield parking lot. Note that some cast members may employ the use of a colonial clay pipe and tobacco as part of their presentation on a limited basis. \nWeather: Rain or shine\, the show must go on! Fort Atkinson hosts several living-history weekends a year that feature volunteers recreating the lives of the soldiers\, artisans\, and civilians that lived in and around the outpost. Interpretive hours are from 10am until 5pm on all living-history days. \nFort Atkinson\, the first military post west of the Missouri River\, is seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles entering the park and may be purchased at the park. A fee of $2 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 3-12 is required to enter the Harold W.
