The Rocky Boy Powwow is the largest event hosted by the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy Montana\, and we want you to know that all are welcome. For one weekend every August\, Rocky Boys Indian Reservation\, the smallest of Montana’s seven reservations\, jumps up in population while hosting a lively celebration of Native American culture\, drawing visitors from across the continent. Surrounded by rolling prairies\, with the Bear Paw Mountains in the distance\, it is here that the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy holds its annual powwow. Over $400\,000 in cash and prizes for singing and dancing competitions! \n\nRocky Boy Powwow\nThe gathering is a fascinating marriage of the modern and traditional. Campers\, minivans and nylon tents join traditional teepees in forming the camps that encircle the Rocky Boy Powwow grounds. \nOne look at license plates on nearby cars shows the distances that some come from to be at this celebration. There are vehicles with plates from Montana\, Idaho\, Colorado\, Arizona\, Minnesota and Alberta\, Canada just to name a few. \nWhether the cars belong to powwow dancers\, singers and committee people or to the spectators who come to see what’s going on\, the Rocky Boy Powwow offers best of the fun and excitement of the dance; the sounds of the many singing groups; the smells from the food vendors booths; and everything else that you can expect at one of West’s biggest powwows. \nRocky Boy Powwow Location\nRocky Boy’s Reservation is near the Canadian border\, in north central Montana. It is graced by the beautiful Bears Paw Mountains.\nDriving Directions\nSee the map or map link to the right or do a Google Maps search for: ‘Agency Road & Clearview\, Rocky Boy\, MT 59521’.\nFollow those directions and you’re almost there – certainly close enough to see the powwow signs. Editor’s note: We could not find any address location on the internet to get this close. There is a slight climb in elevation when coming from the smaller parking lot which is about 500 feet from the fort. \n \nAbout Fort Union Trading Post\nFort Union Trading Post was constructed on the spacious plains in 1828\, near where the mighty Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers joined by John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company. This fort went on to become its most famous fur trade post. Although called a fort\, the post was neither a government nor a military installation\, but a privately owned commercial establishment founded to engage in business with the Northern Plains Tribes. \nBuilt at the request of the Assiniboine nation\, Fort Union Trading Post\, then called Fort Union\, quickly emerged as the Upper Missouri’s most profitable fur trade post. This trade business continued until 1867\, giving rise to a uniquely diverse\, peaceful\, and productive social and cultural environment that helped make Fort Union western America’s longest-lasting fur trade post. celebration after a successful summer of recreation activities in Fort Hall. The event was called a social powwow that drew in many young and old dancers and local drum groups to celebrate. One of the main highlights was the Miss Shoshone-Bannock pageant that drew in over 10 plus young ladies from around the reservation. This tradition continues every year.\nPlaceholder \n\nShoshone-Bannock Festival Powwow: Men’s Grass\nOriginal Crown In Museum\nToday\, the beaded sash is still worn but in 2006 the original crown was retired and is presently housed at the local Tribal museum. Each contestant competes every August in the areas of: public speaking\, personal interview\, traditional dish\, traditional dance and a traditional talent. Miss Shoshone-Bannock is a Tribal ambassador and role model for the younger generations. \nOne-of-a-Kind Pageant\nThe cultural pageant was the first of its kind and considered to be a prestigious new title for young Shoshone-Bannock women. Each contestant wore their finest handmade deer skin dresses and family beadwork. The winner held the title for one year where she relinquished her title the following year at the powwow. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s\, where the winner was given a fully beaded ‘Miss Shoshone-Bannock’ sash and matching turquoise crown with the Shoshone rose to wear throughout her reign. \nFort Hall Indian Relay\nThe Indian Relay races have long since been a part of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes culture. The sport actually originated here on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation over a hundred years ago. Many families that participated in the sport decades ago are still participating and passing this legacy on from generation to generation. The Indian Relay teams consist of three horses and four team members (1 rider\, 1 catcher (Mugger)\, and 2 holders). The rider must complete a lap with each horse riding bareback. The rider must dismount without any help from their team mates and without losing control of their horses. \nVendors\nTo join the festival as a vendor\, complete the appropriate vendor form and follow the instructions. The Annual Meskwaki Powwow originated from the traditional religious and social beliefs of the Meskwaki Tribe. Today\, it is not so much a religious event\, but more of a social gathering. Specifically\, today’s event is derived from the “Green Corn Dance” and other social events of the Tribe in their early years. The “Green Corn Dance” was an annual event that took place during the harvesting of crops. The “Field Days” held from 1902 to 1912\, lasted about a week\, with dancing\, games\, and horse racing. It was a social gathering without a harvest. \n\nMeskwaki Powwow\nFrom “Field Days” to Meskawki Powwow\nIn 1912\, the Chief appointed 15 men to plan for the next year. The appointed men decided to change the name from “Field Days” to “Powwow”. The first powwow was held at the present location. \n“Today’s” Meskawki Powwow\nToday\, the Meskwaki Annual Powwow is the only one of its kind in Iowa. It is a four day event used to celebrate the end of summer. As the color and intrigue of it all has drawn the most attention from the outside world\, the Meskwaki Annual Powwow features dancing\, singing\, handcrafts\, food\, games and fun. Although dance styles and content have evolved over the years\, the Meskwaki still consider the event a time of reaffirmation and hope\, of kinship and friendship\, and of celebration. They are thankful for the opportunity to share a part of who they are as Meskwaki with you. Most importantly\, they hope you walk away with open minds and open hearts to be able to respect and learn from different cultures such as theirs. \n~ ~ GENERAL ADMISSION ~ ~\nAdults: $7.00\nChildren (6-12): $5.00; $3.00 on Thursday/Children’s Day\nChildren 5 and under: FREE \nPERFORMANCE SCHEDULE\nThursday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nChildren’s Day: Ages 6-12 $3.00\nFriday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nSenior Citizen’s Day: 55+ $3.00\nSaturday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nVeteran’s Day: $3.00 (Must show proof)\nSunday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nSpecial Events to be announced. \nMeskwaki Powwow Gallery Preview\n\nView Full Gallery\nMeskwaki Powwow Head Staff\nEmcee: Mike Keahna\, Dawson Davenport\nArena Director: David “Odie” Oldbear Jr\nColor Guard: Robert Morgan Post 701\nSound Man: Dennis Keahna Jr \nUNIQUE DANCES PERFORMED AT THE MESKWAKI POWWOW\nAs always\, some things change and some things endure\, just as you\, we like some of the ways and things that have long endured\, some of the old-time foods\, the dances\, the arts and crafts\, passed down from our fore bearers that we want to preserve for our children.\nToday\, we share with you the appreciation of what is truly distinctive about our way of life. The rendezvous is held in conjunction with the Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow\, sponsored by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). The annual gathering is their biggest of the year\, a time when Grand Portage comes alive and reflects on its rich heritage. Reenactors from across the country and Canada gather to camp and challenge each other to games and skills from our historic past\, next door to the pow wow at the Grand Portage Historic Rendezvous Encampment. View Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Details \nAbout The Grand Portage National Monument\nThe Grand Portage National Monument is a U.S. national monument located on the North Shore of Lake Superior. This historical place was the center of fur trade activity and the Native America Ojibwe heritage. The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. The local tribe’s powwow also goes on at the same time. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow at the Grand Portage Monument Heritage Center in Grand Portage\, Minnesota. \nTags: Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow\, Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Powwow\, Minnesota Powwow\, Minnesota Pow Wow \nView Grand Portage Rendezvous Days\nView Other Minnesota Powwows

The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1982 cited the August meeting as evidence that the tribe\, despite state efforts to “detribalize” the Indians in the 1880s\, had never disbanded. \nThe Narragansett People have seen many changes in their lands; however\, their traditional culture has been passed down from generation to generation and is even stronger today\, thanks to events such as the Annual Narragansett Indian Tribe’s August Meeting Powwow. \nEach year’s meeting draws hundreds of people from around the Northeast and beyond to this wooded clearing at the Narragansett Indian Church Grounds. Don’t miss the experience at this year’s Annual Narragansett Indian Tribes August Meeting Powwow. If you can’t make it for some reason\, go ahead and mark your calendar for next year (or ten years). This three-day Chief Lookingglass Pow Wow features traditional dancing\, drumming\, food\, memorials\, and name-giving ceremonies with all ages—birth to elderly—participating. Powwows are a way of gathering to join in dancing\, singing\, visiting\, renewing old friendships\, and making new ones. This is a time to renew American Indian culture and preserve rich heritage. \n\nChief Lookingglass Powwow\nTents\, teepees and trailers will surround the powwow’s dance arena. Vendors\, dancers\, singers and spectators will come from many tribes and many parts of the United States and Canada to be in Kamiah among friends and families. Persons from throughout the region come to watch the dances\, listen to drumming and learn about American Indian traditions. All events take place in and around the Nez Perce Tribe’s Wa’A’Yas Community Center in Kamiah. \nThe event is named for the Nez Perce military leader Looking Glass (Allalimya Takanin\, born c. 1832- d. 1877). He was a principle Nez Perce architect of many of the military strategies employed by the Nez Perce during the Nez Perce War of 1877. He\, along with Chief Joseph\, directed the 1877 retreat from eastern Oregon into Montana and onward toward the Canadian border during the Nez Perce War. He inherited his name from his father\, the prominent Nez Perce chief Apash Wyakaikt (“Flint Necklace”) or Ippakness Wayhayken (“Looking Glass Around Neck”) and was therefore called by the whites Looking Glass. \nLocation\nWa-A’Yas Community Center\nIdaho Street\nKamiah\, Idaho 83536\nNez Perce Tribe Website \nFor More Information\nMemorials: Angela Broncheau 208-935-5349\nRoyalty: Tana Wheeler Numez 208-305-0475\nConcessions & Raffle: Nancy Wheeler 208-790-0262\nNez Perce Tribe: Call 208-843-2253; Email nptec@nezperce.org \nChief Lookingglass Pow Wow Mini Gallery\n\n \nPow Wow Schedule\nFriday\n12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Giveaways / Memorials\n7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\nSaturday\n7:00 a.m. Huckleberry Pancake Feed\n8:00 a.m. Fun Run\n12:00 p.m. Friendship Dinner\n1:00 p.m. Grand Entry\n5:00 p.m. Dinner Break\n6:00 p.m. Main Street Parade\n7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\nSunday\n1:00 p.m. Grand Entry\nDance Contest Finals\nCrowning New Royalty\nRaffle Winners\, Dance Contest Winner\nRetire Color \nThe Chief Lookingglass Pow Wow Committee does not accept responsibility for accidents\, theft\, automobile problems\, short funded travelers\, illness\, break-ups or divorces. \n \nMark you calendar today so you don’t miss the next Chief Lookingglass Pow Wow on the third weekend of August in Kamiah\, Idaho. \nTags: Chief Lookingglass Pow Wow\, Chief Lookingglass Powwow\, Idaho Powwow\, Idaho Pow Wow \nView other Idaho Powwows

After more than 30 years of effort as the Nansemond Indian Tribal Assocation\, our tribe (along with 5 other tribes from the original Powhatan paramount chiefdom) was granted federal recognition. In honor of this turning point we have returned to the name used by our ancestors—the Nansemond Indian Nation. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Nansemond Indian Pow Wow in August at Mattanock Town in Suffolk\, Virginia. \nTags: Nansemond Indian Pow Wow\, Nansemond Indian Tribal Association Pow Wow\, Nansemond Indian Tribal Pow Wow\, Nansemond Indian Powwow\, Nansemond Indian Tribal Association Powwow\, Nansemond Indian Tribal Powwow\, Virginia Pow Wow\, Virginia Powwow \nView other Virginia Pow Wows

For many years in the 20th century\, the Festival helped raise funds for the Mohegan Church and for Mohegan activities. In 2003\, in an effort to scale back and return to its roots\, the celebration returned to Fort Shantok after many years at a local high school. Today\, the festival is held at Fort Shantok at the end of summer\, with the corn harvest\, during the third weekend in August. This gives us an opportunity to get together and share some aspects of our culture with our friends and neighbors in the community. In keeping with tradition\, it includes crafts and food items for sale\, plus traditional dance and storytelling. \nHistory of the Mohegan Wigwam Festival\nBefore the arrival of the Europeans\, Mohegans held several celebrations throughout the year to give thanks to the Creator for the earth’s many gifts. The annual Corn Thanksgiving was most important. Tribespeople thanked Mundu\, the Creator and Great Mystery for the gift of corn\, a source of both spiritual and physical sustenance. \n \nThe name “Wigwam” comes from the word Wigwomun\, meaning “welcome” or “come in the house.” In many ways\, the Wigwam was a community open house and homecoming. Both corn and home play central roles in the celebration. In early times\, the Festival was held on the site of the current Mohegan Church\, at a “fair tree.” But the tradition started to fade in the 1800s with increasing pressure for the Tribe to Christianize and assimilate. Medicine Woman Emma Baker revived the Festival just as Tribal lands started to break up in 1860. She incorporated it with the activities of the Mohegan Church Ladies’ Sewing Society\, making it a source of Tribal solidarity. Inspired by the chance to retain their identity at a dark moment\, the Tribe became determined that this should happen. \n \nMark your calendar so you won’t miss the next Mohegan Wigwam Festival at Fort Shantock in Uncasville\, Connecticut. \nTags: Mohegan Wigwam Festival\, Fort Shantock Wigwam Festival\, Connecticut Powwow\, Connecticut Pow Wow \nView other Connecticut Pow Wows
