Lawilowan American Indian Festival is our Indoor\, Midwinter gathering\, that began in March of 2007. The Powwow provides an opportunity for both observers and participants to connect with American Indian culture on a deeper level in a natural environment. The one day\, non-competitive\, traditional powwow is one of the largest in the area and draws as many as 500 dancers\, 24 vendors\, and about 2000 attendees each year. \n\nLawilowan American Indian Festival\nThe Lawilowan American Indian Festival provides a family friendly environment for local native peoples to celebrate the many tribes from which they hail and share their traditions and customs with the public. Come out and enjoy great family fun as you experience Native American Drumming\, Singing\, Dancing\, crafts and vendors\, Native food and the Native American Flute Circle. The Lawilowan American Indian Festival will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Shippensburg University’s Recreation Center. Grand Entry is at noon\, followed by intertribal dancing. Seating is limited\, so bring folding chairs. \nAll proceeds will benefit the American Diabetes Association with a focus on children’s diabetes. Diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases among young Native American children. California State University\, Long Beach’s annual Pow Wow\, an American Indian social celebration\, returns to the campus’ central quad. The largest spring event of its kind in Southern California\, the Pow Wow at Cal State Long Beach is focused on displaying the university’s strong American Indian presence. Admission and parking are free. Everyone is welcome at Tucson’s largest gathering of Native American Dancing\, Singing\, Arts\, Crafts\, and food. \nBegun in 1982 as a small social pow wow to benefit tribal fees committees\, the Wa:k Pow Wow has grown in popularity with both participants and spectators. Contemporary festivities begin with cultural dances leading to traditional gourd dancing that gives way to an impressive Grand Entry that is followed by inte-rtribal dancing\, team dancing competitions\, hoop dancing\, two-step dancing\, owl dancing\, and a drum contest. \n\nWa:k Pow Wow\nDance contest categories range from Northern and Southern contests for everyone from Tiny Tots to Junior Boys and Girls (everything from grass and fancy to jingle and fancy shawl as well as traditional) to teen boys and girls competition\, and women’s and men’s events that also include Golden Age competition for both genders.
