Every year the powwow grows\, offering an opportunity to share our culture with the community through dancing\, vendors and traditional native foods. We hope everyone will come out and join us. Enjoy traditional Native American singing\, dancing and drumming at the UCO Spring Powwow. The event kicks off with the Gourd Dance\, in which Native American dancers perform while wearing gourd anklets\, followed by a traditional supper of corn stew and fry bread at 4:00 p.m.. Things will really get going at the Grand Entry\, beginning at 6:00 p.m.\, with the arena director leading in a group of war dancers\, signifying the official start of the powwow. \n\nUniversity of Central Oklahoma Spring Powwow\nThe UCO Spring Powwow\, sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) and the Native American Student Association (NASA)\, will feature traditional Native American singing\, dancing and drumming. Come to the University of Central Oklahoma campus and experience and enjoy this fun and traditional Native American gathering. \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \nSchedule\n2:00 pm Gourd Dance\n5:00 pm Free Traditional American Indian Dinner\n7:00 pm Grand Entry: Starting with Color Guard\, the presentation of flags\, national anthem and contest performers.\n7:30 pm Dance Competition Begins \nThe UCO Spring Powwow will begin with the Gourd Dance\, in which native dancers perform while wearing gourd anklets\, followed by a traditional Native American supper of corn stew and fry bread at 5 p.m. The Grand Entry will begin at 7 p.m.\, with the arena director leading in a group of war dancers\, signifying the official start of the powwow. \nThe dance competition is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. UCO Spring Powwow competition categories include men’s straight\, men’s grass\, men’s fancy\, men’s traditional\, women’s cloth\, women’s buckskin\, women’s jingle and women’s shawl dances. \nMore Information: call 405-974-3588; email nasa.uco@gmail.com \nUCO Spring Powwow Mini Gallery\n\n\nAbout the Powwow Dance Sessions\nGourd Dancing – This dance is not a true powwow dance style but a separate type of dance before the Grand Entry. During the Gourd Dancing only the Gourd Dancers\, their relatives\, and relatives of Veterans should be in the Pow Wow arena. \nGrand Entry\, Intertribal & Contest Dancing – This is the entry of all the people entering the dance arena or the sacred circle. During the Grand Entry\, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the circle. Following the veterans are other important guests of the Pow Wow – including tribal chiefs\, Princesses\, elders\, and Pow Wow organizers. Next in line are the men dancers. The men are followed by the women dancers. Once everyone is in the arena\, the song ends and a song to honor the flag and the veterans is sung. During Grand Entry and the Veterans honor song it is important to native culture that NO PICTURES\, VIDEOS\, or AUDIO recordings take place. Following the Grand Entry\, intertribal and contest dancing (if the powwow includes contests) will follow. ‘Sets’ of songs (and dancing) will be separated by announcements\, specials\, raffles\, and other powwow related ‘business’. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next UCO Spring Powwow in April in Edmund\, Oklahoma. \n \nTags: UCO Spring Powwow\, UCO Spring Pow Wow\, University of Central Oklahoma Spring Powwow\, University of Central Oklahoma Spring Pow Wow\, Oklahoma Powwow\, Oklahoma Pow Wow \nView Other Oklahoma Pow Wows
