Folks come from South Dakota\, North Dakota\, all into Canada\, Nebraska\, Wisconsin\, Montana\, and in Minnesota. People from all over the country like to travel to the Mahkato Pow Wow\, because it’s one of the last outdoor traditional powwows. \n\nMahkato Pow Wow\nThe idea of the Mahkato Pow Wow started in 1972 with Amos Owens\, Bud Lawrence and Jim Buckley who had a vision and a focus regarding reconciliation. To bring awareness back to Mankato\, despite the 1862 hanging that took place here in December (1862). That’s a tough deal\, especially when the Dakota were exiled from the state of Minnesota. It then becomes a homecoming for a lot of Dakota families. \nGrand Entries:\nTo many the Grand Entry is the highlight of the Mahkato Pow Wow. There will be four grand entries. Two two hour sessions take place. Half of the sixth grade classes\, their teachers and parents come in the morning (between 300-400 persons) and the other half come in the afternoon between 300-400 persons). \nThe day begins with a fifteen minute “opening circle” ceremony conducted by Dakota leaders. It was used as an encampment from 1838-39. The park is the burial site for two Cherokee Chiefs who died during the removal (“Fly South” and “Whitepath”). This long\, cruel relocation has become known as the “Trail of Tears” and by Native Americans as “The Trail Where They Cried”. \nAbout the Hopkinsville Trail of Tears Pow Wow\nThe idea for hosting a Pow Wow in Hopkinsville was developed by the Trail of Tears Commission\, Inc. as a way to commemorate in 1988 the 150th Anniversary of the tragic and cruel Cherokee removal from ancestral homelands in the southeast across the Mississippi to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. Known as the “Trail of Tears”\, this forced removal affected Hopkinsville as it was on the removal route and served as a major stopping point for the Cherokees in Kentucky during the fall and harsh winder of 1838-39. Kentucky had even older ties to the Cherokees as it was once a part of Cherokee ancestral lands. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’ forget the next Trail of Tears Pow Wow the first full weekend after Labor Day at the Trail of Tears Commemorative Park in Hopkinsville\, Kentucky. \nTags: Trail of Tears Pow Wow\, Trail of Tears Powwow\, Kentucky Powwow\, Kentucky Pow Wow \nView Other Kentucky Powwows
