They can tour the home where the last traditional chief of the Crow Nation lived. Visitors will hear stories about Chief Plenty Coups and the Crow people. In prior years\, the 195-acre state park\, which sits 40 miles south of Billings\, has drawn a crowd of more than 100 people to hear talks\, eat fry bread\, buy Native jewelry or attend a buffalo feast\, poke their heads inside a teepee or step into the visitor center to learn about the Crow chief. \nChief Plenty Coups’ homestead was dedicated as a peace park in 1928. But the idea for it came to the Crow leader back in the 1880s\, when he and other tribal leaders visited Mount Vernon\, home to President George Washington\, said park manager Chris Dantic. \nWhen Chief Plenty Coups heard how the home of the “great white leader” was open to the public\, it inspired him to do something similar. He wanted to leave his land\, his homestead\, as a park — not just to Crow people but to everyone — since the the chief was a man of peace\, bringing people together. He wanted to make sure it was shared by all cultures. The No. 1 comment at this park is about its peacefulness and the serenity. With little changed on the hilly land that surrounds the park\, it’s not hard to imagine it in the time of Chief Plenty Coups. \nAbout the Park\nChief Plenty Coups State Park is a cultural and historical state park located in Pryor\, MT within the Crow Indian Reservation\, just 35 miles south of Billings. Chief Plenty Coups (Aleek-chea-ahoosh\, meaning “many achievements”) was the last traditional chief of the Crow Tribe and his home is now a National Historic Landmark. Upon Chief Plenty Coups’ death in 1932\, 190 acres of his land was turned into a public park. This decision was made by Chief Plenty Coups and his wife\, Strikes the Iron. The park is a day use park where people can see and walk around his log home\, sacred spring\, and homestead. There is also a visitor center with exhibits about Chief Plenty Coups and the history of the Crow People as well as a gift shop. There is a 3/4 mile trail around the park along beautiful Pryor Creek. The tranquil\, shaded picnic area is a beautiful spot to enjoy lunch and absorb the serenity of this special place. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Chief Plenty Coups Day of Honor on Saturday df Labor Day Weekend at Chief Plenty Coups State Park in Pryor\, Montana. \n \nTags: Chief Plenty Coups Day of Honor\, Chief Plenty Coups State Park \nView Other Montana Powwows & Native American Events

Chief Numaga was a great 19th century leader who had the courage and the vision to counsel against war. Facing severe threats to his people by invading white forces\, Numaga repeatedly chose peace. His successful peace negotiations\, helped set a precedent for future disputes. \nNumaga also has a documented history of trying to preserve the destruction of our aboriginal lands. Numaga called the pine nut groves\, the Indian’s orchards and asked whites to collect fallen timber instead of cutting down healthy trees. Unfortunately\, Numaga’s early advocacy for Mother Earth fell on deaf ears. Translated from the English language\, Numaga means “Give Food.” He passed away in 1871 and is buried in the hills near Wadsworth. \nContact Info\nReno-Sparks Indian Colony\nE-Mail: elitereno775@gmail.com\nPhone: (775) 250-7013 \n \nSo\, mark your calendar so you don’t miss Don’t miss the Annual Numaga Indian Days Pow Wow in Hungry Valley\, Nevada. The annual Spokane Tribe Labor Day Powwow and Celebration blends tradition and modernity. Members of tribes throughout the Northwest come to Wellpinit for four days of dancing\, drumming and connecting with one another inside the tribe’s Wardance Hall\, which opened in 2014. \n\n2019 Spokane Tribe Labor Day Pow Wow – Men’s Prairie Chicken\nDuring nightly intertribal dancing\, several hundred dancers will be in full regalia – feathers\, bright-colored fabrics\, beads\, bells and buckskin. Dancers of every age – from the very old to the very young will join in the dancing while the various groups of singers (“drums”)\, provided the beat and songs. \nThe Grand Entry is a special event to witness. Men\, women\, and children adorned in traditional clothing dance into the hall to singing and the beating of a drum. Dance contests\, intertribal dancing and a variety of specials and special contests follow the Grand Entry for the remainder of the “dance session”\, often interrupted by explanations\, stories\, introductions and humor from the pow wow Emcees. The Emcees play an important role in all pow wows\, both for the participants as well as the visitors\, and are carefully selected by the Pow Wow Committee for this role. \nOutside the hall on the surrounding Wellpinit Pow Wow Grounds are booths where colorful Indian blankets\, crafts\, books\, and DVDs and other items can be purchased. There are Native food stands where you can buy traditional Indian fry bread or an Indian taco. Hamburgers and other fast food festival choices are available as well. \nAlthough the Tribe welcomes everyone to the Spokane Tribe Labor Day Pow Wow\, bear in mind that this is a sacred community event and not a tourist attraction. Be respectful and courteous. It’s a wonderful celebration that’s sure to move you and stay with you for a long time to come. \nLocationWar Dance Hall at the Spokane Tribal Pow Wow GroundsBIA Hwy 183Wellpinit\, WA 99040Driving Map Link \nPow Wow Features24-hour Open Stick GamesBlackjack\, Poker & Other Games (must be 18+)Pow Wow Committee Raffles \n \nWednesdayMemorials\, Name Givings\, Rejoinings\, and other non-money contests may be held on Wednesday with only prior arrangements made with the Pow-wow Committee.ThursdayTiny Tot Pow WowRoyalty CoronationFridayTeen Modern Dance \nDrum Contesst (5 Singer Minimum)1st $5000 2nd $4000 3rd $3000 4th $2000 5th $1000PA system will be provided. The Great Dakota Gathering is an annual event for families of indigenous and local populations and around the region. This year\, we join in celebration of the 60th Birthday of Winona LaDuke\, who will be celebrating in WInona during this weekend\, as well. A special social/jingle dress dance will occur on Sunday morning. \nSince its beginning\, the Winona Dakota Unity Alliance (WDUA) has been involved in a number of initiatives to facilitate friendships by promoting education and reconciliation. Join us for this annual event for families of indigenous and local populations and around the region. \n\nGreat Dakota Gathering\nThe Winona Dakota Unity Alliance’s (WDUA) Great Dakota Gathering is unlike any other Powwow around. Enlightening\, energizing\, invigorating\, and powerfully moving\, the Great Dakota Gathering invites Native American families and descendants of settlers together to explore Native American culture\, celebrate friendships\, have fun together\, nurture reconciliation\, and enjoy the meaningful and energizing tradition of dancing. The event includes a Grand Entry Dance by talented Native American dancers\, a learning tent where youngsters can explore Native American culture\, games and activities for kids to have fun together and build friendships\, a unity feast\, Sunrise and other ceremonies\, and a talk circle in which a focus for the day is introduced along with historical background and participants are invited to join in honest heartfelt discussion. \nGreat Dakota Gathering Events (subject to change)\nSaturday Detail (tentative) \n\nWelcome Fire\nWelcome Dinner\nOvernight Camping available\n\nSaturday Detail (tentative) \n\nSunrise Ceremony\, Continental Breakfast & Flag Raising\nKids Events: Relay Races\, Storytelling & Scavenger Hunt\nNative Lacrosse Games & Clinics (beginner & all ages)\nTalk Circle\nvIndigenous Learning Tent\nCommunity Organization Exhibitors\nMoccasin Tournament\nGenealogy Tent\nDakota Language Bingo\n1 PM Grand Entry & Powwow\nSoup Supper\n\nSunday Detail (tentative) \n\nSunrise Ceremony\, Continental Breakfast & Flag Raising\nSpiritual Service with Keynote Speaker\nFriendship/Social Dance\nSpecial Jingle Dress Dance\nClosing Ceremony\n\nGreat Dakota Gathering Mini Gallery\n\n \nCamping\n* Free Camping on site.\n* No RV hook-ups.\nFree Tent Camping only (No hookups) at Unity Park\, RV and Travel Trailer Camping available at Prairie Island Campground. This Learning Tent is set up to mirror a truer form of “Indian Education\,” which is to educate as needed and within a specific context\, to make sense and be meaningful. Table-top events may include beadwork\, silverwork\, cradleboards\, quillwork\, moccasins\, toys & games\, buffalo rib-bone rattles\, dream catchers\, Dakota language\, children’s drums & more. \nTalk Circle\nThe Talk Circle is the heart of the Winona Great Dakota Gathering. A moderator\, called the “Circle Maker” introduces a focus for the day and provides histrorical background. The Circle Maker explains the procedure and invites discussion. As one’s turn comes up\, each person may choose to talk or listen (‘pass’). \nThe reason this event is so important is because it directly facilitates friendships and one-to-one interactions. Descendants of people who were at war 150 years ago\, are not to blame for what their ancestors did. However\, when people suffer by each other’s hand\, “historical trauma” is real to the descendants on all sides. The WDUA Talk Circle promotes good feelings among all participants. \nUnity Feast\nThe Dakota as well as other native American nations are known for generous hospitality\, gift-giving\, and providing food for people who attend Wacipi (pow wow). In the spirit of that tradition\, the Great Dakota Gathering invites indigenous populations and local residents to share in community feasting. The feast is a time to honor special guests and elders and remember ancestors in a ceremonial way. \nCeremonies\nSpiritual ceremonies are important to experience because spiritual ceremonies are at the center of traditional life. In Minnesota\, Dakota ceremonies were outlawed until the Jimmy Carter years in the White House. As trust has built\, people have begun to share their spiritual ceremonies with the people of Winona. Some in which we’ve been privileged to participate include: Sunrise Ceremony\, Wiping of Tears\, and Friendship Honoring Ceremony. In contemporary Native American life\, traditional spirituality and Christianity are often blended. The WDUA Great Dakota Gathering seeks to provide authentic ceremonies in which anyone can find meaning. They are planned and guided by spiritual leader from Native American & Christian traditions. \nSunday Community Spiritual Service: Native American music\, prayers\, and purifying sage are blended with Christian music and liturgy. The focus varies\, but always includes special ceremonies\, guests\, celebrations\, and themes. \n \nTags: Great Dakota Gathering\, Minnesota Powwow\, Minnesota Pow Wow \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Great Dakota Gathering at Unity Park at the East end of Lake Winona in Winona\, MN. \nTags: Great Dakota Gathering\, Minnesota Indian Pow Wow\, Minnesota Pow Wow \nView Other Minnesota Powwows
