\n \n \n \nAll are welcome at the 105th Spokane Tribe Labor Day Pow Wow on August 29 – September 2\, 2019 in Wardance Hall at the Spokane Tribal Pow Wow Grounds in Wellpinit\, Washington. The annual Spokane Tribe Labor Day Powwow and Celebration blends tradition and modernity. Members of tribes throughout the Northwest come to Wellpinit for four days of dancing\, drumming and connecting with one another inside the tribe’s Wardance Hall\, which opened in 2014. \n\n2019 Spokane Tribe Labor Day Pow Wow – Men’s Prairie Chicken\nDuring nightly intertribal dancing\, several hundred dancers will be in full regalia – feathers\, bright-colored fabrics\, beads\, bells and buckskin. Dancers of every age – from the very old to the very young will join in the dancing while the various groups of singers (“drums”)\, provided the beat and songs. \nThe Grand Entry is a special event to witness. Men\, women\, and children adorned in traditional clothing dance into the hall to singing and the beating of a drum. Dance contests\, intertribal dancing and a variety of specials and special contests follow the Grand Entry for the remainder of the “dance session”\, often interrupted by explanations\, stories\, introductions and humor from the pow wow Emcees. The Emcees play an important role in all pow wows\, both for the participants as well as the visitors\, and are carefully selected by the Pow Wow Committee for this role. \nOutside the hall on the surrounding Wellpinit Pow Wow Grounds are booths where colorful Indian blankets\, crafts\, books\, and DVDs and other items can be purchased. There are Native food stands where you can buy traditional Indian fry bread or an Indian taco. As one’s turn comes up\, each person may choose to talk or listen (‘pass’). \nThe reason this event is so important is because it directly facilitates friendships and one-to-one interactions. Descendants of people who were at war 150 years ago\, are not to blame for what their ancestors did. However\, when people suffer by each other’s hand\, “historical trauma” is real to the descendants on all sides. The WDUA Talk Circle promotes good feelings among all participants. \nUnity Feast\nThe Dakota as well as other native American nations are known for generous hospitality\, gift-giving\, and providing food for people who attend Wacipi (pow wow). In the spirit of that tradition\, the Great Dakota Gathering invites indigenous populations and local residents to share in community feasting. The feast is a time to honor special guests and elders and remember ancestors in a ceremonial way. \nCeremonies\nSpiritual ceremonies are important to experience because spiritual ceremonies are at the center of traditional life. In Minnesota\, Dakota ceremonies were outlawed until the Jimmy Carter years in the White House. As trust has built\, people have begun to share their spiritual ceremonies with the people of Winona. Custer and the 7th Calvary. It was a victory celebration to honor many Lakota\, Dakota\, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors who fought in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The Akicita also carried home the personal flag of the fallen General Custer along with several troop guidon flags.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn the years since the Battle of the Little Big Horn took place\, the US Army has never attempted to claim the captured flags from Indian Country. In 1984 Francis White Bird\, Sicangu Lakota tribal member and Decorated Vietnam Veteran\, had replicas of the captured flags made. A ceremony was held at Fort Meade in Sturgis to dedicate the flags. The flags were carried in the grand entry at the Rosebud Wacipi that year for the first time and Mr. White Bird gave the history of them and the celebration’s origins. The Lakota descendants present that day were proud to be part of a waktegli waci or victory dance. \nOn the first day of the fair\, there would be a morning charge. Many young men and women would mount their horses for a long charge through camp. Lakota victory songs were sung and the women sounded their trill. The Wacipi was held for people to dance and enjoy themselves. Other ceremonies\, such as a young woman’s coming out celebration or other feasts to honor loved ones\, were also held during the Wacipi. \nAnd when sacred ceremonies were taken underground after being outlawed by the federal government\, our people would sometimes conduct them under the cover of the annual celebration so as to avoid detection. I remember listening to the story of a kettle dance held during the Wacipi. A late Sicangu elder witnessed this ceremony as a child. She spoke of watching a big crowd surround her older relative as they took part in the ceremony. At this time\, Native American religious dances were outlawed by the United States and Canadian governments. Traditional dances went “underground\,” to avoid government detection. However\, this dance\, loosely based on the traditional War Dance\, was considered appropriate to be performed for visitors on reservations and at “Wild West” shows. Two young Ponca boys are specifically credited with developing the fast-paced dance that the audiences loved and the Ponca Tribe soon built their own dance arena in White Eagle\, Oklahoma.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nWithin no time\, other tribes continued the practice and created new dances that could legally be danced in public. In the 1930s\, the Kiowa and Comanche created new styles of dance regalia that was incorporated into the Fancy Dance. \nEven before the Fancy Dance was established\, an intertribal Pow Wow circuit had already been organized where various tribes held dance contests. These became an important source of revenue during the Great Depression. In the late 1930s\, women also began to perform in the Fancy Dance \nThe dance is fast paced\, colorful\, and highly energetic\, often including tricks and extremely athletic movements. Dancing regalia includes brightly colored feather bustles and headwear\, beaded bodices\, leggings\, shawls\, and moccasins. For many years in the 20th century\, the Festival helped raise funds for the Mohegan Church and for Mohegan activities. In 2003\, in an effort to scale back and return to its roots\, the celebration returned to Fort Shantok after many years at a local high school. Today\, the festival is held at Fort Shantok at the end of summer\, with the corn harvest\, during the third weekend in August. The annual Corn Thanksgiving was most important. Tribespeople thanked Mundu\, the Creator and Great Mystery for the gift of corn\, a source of both spiritual and physical sustenance. \n \nThe name “Wigwam” comes from the word Wigwomun\, meaning “welcome” or “come in the house.” In many ways\, the Wigwam was a community open house and homecoming. Both corn and home play central roles in the celebration. In early times\, the Festival was held on the site of the current Mohegan Church\, at a “fair tree.” But the tradition started to fade in the 1800s with increasing pressure for the Tribe to Christianize and assimilate. Medicine Woman Emma Baker revived the Festival just as Tribal lands started to break up in 1860. She incorporated it with the activities of the Mohegan Church Ladies’ Sewing Society\, making it a source of Tribal solidarity. This three-day Chief Lookingglass Pow Wow features traditional dancing\, drumming\, food\, memorials\, and name-giving ceremonies with all ages—birth to elderly—participating. Powwows are a way of gathering to join in dancing\, singing\, visiting\, renewing old friendships\, and making new ones. This is a time to renew American Indian culture and preserve rich heritage. \n\nChief Lookingglass Powwow\nTents\, teepees and trailers will surround the powwow’s dance arena. Vendors\, dancers\, singers and spectators will come from many tribes and many parts of the United States and Canada to be in Kamiah among friends and families. Persons from throughout the region come to watch the dances\, listen to drumming and learn about American Indian traditions. All events take place in and around the Nez Perce Tribe’s Wa’A’Yas Community Center in Kamiah. \nThe event is named for the Nez Perce military leader Looking Glass (Allalimya Takanin\, born c. 1832- d. 1877). He was a principle Nez Perce architect of many of the military strategies employed by the Nez Perce during the Nez Perce War of 1877. He\, along with Chief Joseph\, directed the 1877 retreat from eastern Oregon into Montana and onward toward the Canadian border during the Nez Perce War.
