The rendezvous is held in conjunction with the Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow\, sponsored by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). The annual gathering is their biggest of the year\, a time when Grand Portage comes alive and reflects on its rich heritage. Reenactors from across the country and Canada gather to camp and challenge each other to games and skills from our historic past\, next door to the pow wow at the Grand Portage Historic Rendezvous Encampment. View Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Details \nAbout The Grand Portage National Monument\nThe Grand Portage National Monument is a U.S. national monument located on the North Shore of Lake Superior. This historical place was the center of fur trade activity and the Native America Ojibwe heritage. The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. The local tribe’s powwow also goes on at the same time. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow at the Grand Portage Monument Heritage Center in Grand Portage\, Minnesota. \nTags: Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow\, Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Powwow\, Minnesota Powwow\, Minnesota Pow Wow \nView Grand Portage Rendezvous Days\nView Other Minnesota Powwows

The Annual Meskwaki Powwow originated from the traditional religious and social beliefs of the Meskwaki Tribe. Today\, it is not so much a religious event\, but more of a social gathering. Specifically\, today’s event is derived from the “Green Corn Dance” and other social events of the Tribe in their early years. The “Green Corn Dance” was an annual event that took place during the harvesting of crops. The “Field Days” held from 1902 to 1912\, lasted about a week\, with dancing\, games\, and horse racing. It was a social gathering without a harvest. \n\nMeskwaki Powwow\nFrom “Field Days” to Meskawki Powwow\nIn 1912\, the Chief appointed 15 men to plan for the next year. The appointed men decided to change the name from “Field Days” to “Powwow”. The first powwow was held at the present location. \n“Today’s” Meskawki Powwow\nToday\, the Meskwaki Annual Powwow is the only one of its kind in Iowa. It is a four day event used to celebrate the end of summer. As the color and intrigue of it all has drawn the most attention from the outside world\, the Meskwaki Annual Powwow features dancing\, singing\, handcrafts\, food\, games and fun. Although dance styles and content have evolved over the years\, the Meskwaki still consider the event a time of reaffirmation and hope\, of kinship and friendship\, and of celebration. They are thankful for the opportunity to share a part of who they are as Meskwaki with you. Most importantly\, they hope you walk away with open minds and open hearts to be able to respect and learn from different cultures such as theirs. \n~ ~ GENERAL ADMISSION ~ ~\nAdults: $7.00\nChildren (6-12): $5.00; $3.00 on Thursday/Children’s Day\nChildren 5 and under: FREE \nPERFORMANCE SCHEDULE\nThursday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nChildren’s Day: Ages 6-12 $3.00\nFriday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nSenior Citizen’s Day: 55+ $3.00\nSaturday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nVeteran’s Day: $3.00 (Must show proof)\nSunday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nSpecial Events to be announced. \nMeskwaki Powwow Gallery Preview\n\nView Full Gallery\nMeskwaki Powwow Head Staff\nEmcee: Mike Keahna\, Dawson Davenport\nArena Director: David “Odie” Oldbear Jr\nColor Guard: Robert Morgan Post 701\nSound Man: Dennis Keahna Jr \nUNIQUE DANCES PERFORMED AT THE MESKWAKI POWWOW\nAs always\, some things change and some things endure\, just as you\, we like some of the ways and things that have long endured\, some of the old-time foods\, the dances\, the arts and crafts\, passed down from our fore bearers that we want to preserve for our children.\nToday\, we share with you the appreciation of what is truly distinctive about our way of life. We welcome you to our beautiful Meskwaki Indian Settlement. \nDances at the Meskwaki Powwow\nFriendship Dance: A universal dance among all tribal nations\, it welcomes all visitors and guests to the host tribe. The Friendship Dance expresses goodwill and friendship among all humankind. \nMeskwaki Dance: A dance unique to the Meskwaki people. Whenever a gathering of tribal groups took place\, each group or tribe performed their own special dance. This dance\, performed by the Meskwaki\, depicts their characteristics in the times of peace and war.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More about Dances at the Meskwaki Powwow”]\nHarvest or Bean Dance: This dance recognizes the importance of the resources of life; food for the villages for the coming year. This dance gives thanks to the Great Spirit for the abundance of food and bountiful crops. \nSwan Dance: The women of the tribe lead this dance with graceful movement. It is a tribute to those who have gone before us and their shadowy forms that are unseen. The Swan Dance depicts the graceful movement of birds\, especially the most majestic of all water birds. \nBuffalo Head Dance: This dance is in honor of the magnificent buffalo and the creator after a successful hunt. The songs and movement of the dancers are dedicated to the enduring spirit of the buffalo. \nPipe Dance: This dance honors warriors for their bravery and heroism in times of conflict. \nShield Dance: In pantomime this dance depicts battle skill in hand to hand combat. This dance was adopted from the Southern Plains Indians in the 1940’s as a recognition of contact in earlier times with the Kiowa\, Cheyenne\, Arapaho and Comanche. \nShawnee Dance: Whenever the allied tribes came together for council or celebration\, they often exchanged elements of cultural value. The Shawnee Dance was given as a token of friendship to the Meskwaki from the Shawnee Tribe in Oklahoma. The five tribes who were closely associated historically in language and traditional ways\, were the Shawnee\, Mascouten\, Kickapoo\, Sauk and Fox (Meskwaki Nations). \nRabbit Dance: Originally known as the Owl Dance\, a similar Meskwaki Version\, this social dance is borrowed from the Lakota. It is a popular two step among all tribes. \nVictory Dance: This dance is dedicated to the men and women of the armed forces and it is a dance to honor veterans who have returned home to their loved ones. \nIntertribal Dance: A generic dance often performed by anyone in costume during the main performance dances; it is a “break dance”. \nSnake Dance: Dancers participate in a “follow-the-leader” style dance that mimics the life cycle of the Snake including when it eats\, sheds its skin\, and dies. Contrary to its description\, it’s a very fun dance for all ages: dancers\, singers and observers alike.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nLocation\nMeskwaki Powwow Grounds\nX988+86 Tama\, IA 52339\n(641) 484-4678\nGoogle Map Link \nDirections: The Meskwaki Settlement is located along the Iowa river about half way between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids in central Iowa. Contrary to its description\, it’s a very fun dance for all ages: dancers\, singers and observers alike.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nLocation\nMeskwaki Powwow Grounds\nX988+86 Tama\, IA 52339\n(641) 484-4678\nGoogle Map Link \nDirections: The Meskwaki Settlement is located along the Iowa river about half way between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids in central Iowa. celebration after a successful summer of recreation activities in Fort Hall. The event was called a social powwow that drew in many young and old dancers and local drum groups to celebrate. One of the main highlights was the Miss Shoshone-Bannock pageant that drew in over 10 plus young ladies from around the reservation. This tradition continues every year.\nPlaceholder \n\nShoshone-Bannock Festival Powwow: Men’s Grass\nOriginal Crown In Museum\nToday\, the beaded sash is still worn but in 2006 the original crown was retired and is presently housed at the local Tribal museum. Each contestant competes every August in the areas of: public speaking\, personal interview\, traditional dish\, traditional dance and a traditional talent. Miss Shoshone-Bannock is a Tribal ambassador and role model for the younger generations. \nOne-of-a-Kind Pageant\nThe cultural pageant was the first of its kind and considered to be a prestigious new title for young Shoshone-Bannock women. Each contestant wore their finest handmade deer skin dresses and family beadwork. The winner held the title for one year where she relinquished her title the following year at the powwow. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s\, where the winner was given a fully beaded ‘Miss Shoshone-Bannock’ sash and matching turquoise crown with the Shoshone rose to wear throughout her reign. \nFort Hall Indian Relay\nThe Indian Relay races have long since been a part of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes culture. The sport actually originated here on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation over a hundred years ago. Many families that participated in the sport decades ago are still participating and passing this legacy on from generation to generation. The Indian Relay teams consist of three horses and four team members (1 rider\, 1 catcher (Mugger)\, and 2 holders). The rider must complete a lap with each horse riding bareback. The rider must dismount without any help from their team mates and without losing control of their horses. \nVendors\nTo join the festival as a vendor\, complete the appropriate vendor form and follow the instructions. Contact us directly if we can assist in any way. The Shoshone-Bannock Festival Powwow grounds have a large number of booths – both covered and open. \nBooth Types: Covered Booths\, Open Booths\, Food Booths\nVendor Committee: 208-478-3718 noshorne@sbtribes.com \nShoshone-Bannock Hotel & Event Center\nI-15 Exit 80\, Fort Hall\, ID 83203 | 855.746.2268 | reservations@shobanhotel.com\nThe Shoshone-Bannock Hotel & Event Center is owned by the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes welcomes guests to Southern Idaho’s newest destination adjacent to the popular Fort Hall Casino. There is a slight climb in elevation when coming from the smaller parking lot which is about 500 feet from the fort. \n \nAbout Fort Union Trading Post\nFort Union Trading Post was constructed on the spacious plains in 1828\, near where the mighty Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers joined by John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company. This fort went on to become its most famous fur trade post. Although called a fort\, the post was neither a government nor a military installation\, but a privately owned commercial establishment founded to engage in business with the Northern Plains Tribes. \nBuilt at the request of the Assiniboine nation\, Fort Union Trading Post\, then called Fort Union\, quickly emerged as the Upper Missouri’s most profitable fur trade post. This trade business continued until 1867\, giving rise to a uniquely diverse\, peaceful\, and productive social and cultural environment that helped make Fort Union western America’s longest-lasting fur trade post. Known as one of the two “world’s oldest powwows\,” the annual homecoming celebration honors Chief Little Priest and 75 of his Winnebago warriors who served with the US Cavalry in 1865. The Winnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration features traditional songs\, dances and food. Visitors come from throughout the US and foreign countries. Camping is available. Craft and food concessions are available on the grounds. \n\nWinnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration\nThe homecoming celebration is an opportunity to celebrate the tribe’s heritage and honors veterans of all wars. The annual celebration begins at dawn Wednesday\, as two of Chief Little Priest’s descendants\, Greg and James Neff\, hoist an 1866 replica flag to the top of its pole. Flags representing 70 or more fallen veterans\, including Little Priest\, will continue to be raised each morning at 6 a.m. and retired at 5 p.m. \nIt’s no small feat for a tribe to have held an annual powwow over a century. The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska — one of two federally recognized tribes of Ho-Chunk Native Americans organized under the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act — prides itself on holding one of “The World’s Oldest Pow Wows.” \nAdmission $5.00 – Public Welcome \nDaily: 6:00 a.m. Flag Raising Ceremony \nRegistration:\nThursday 10:00 a.m. Opens\nFriday 8:00 p.m. Closes \nGrand Entries\nThursday\, Friday\, Saturday: 1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.\nSunday: 1:00 p.m. \nLocation\nVeteran’s Memorial Park\nEast Avenue\nWinnebago\, NE 78061 \nFor More Information:\nTara Hernandez 402-878-3100 tara.hernandez@winnebago.com\nVeterans Info: Gordon Rave 402-922-2179 \nWinnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration Mini Gallery\n\n \nPowwow Head Staff:\nMaster of Ceremonies: To Be Announced\nArena Directors: To Be Announced\nDrum Judge: To Be Announced\nHead Dancers: To Be Announced\nHost Drums: To Be Announced\nInvited Host Drums: To Be Announced\nCurrent Jr. & Sr. Miss Winnebago \nDance Contest Prize Money\nAll contest point begin Thursday 7:00 p.m.\nGolden Age (50+) $1000 $800 $600 $400 $300 $200\nAdult (20-49) $1000 $800 $600 $400 $300 $200\nTeens (13-19) $500 $400 $300 $200 $100 $75\nJuniors (7-12) $250 $200 $150 $100 $75 $50\nTiny Tots: Paid Daily \nDance Contest Categories\nAll Men: Traditional\, Grass\, Fancy\nAll Women: Traditional\, Hochunk Applique\, Fancy\, Jingle\nAdult Men: Southern Straight\nAdult Women: Southern Combined \nDrum Contest – 7 Places\n$10\,000 $8\,000 $7\,000 $6\,000 $5\,000 $4\,000 $3\,000\nNon-Contest Drums paid each session. \nSpecials: To Be Announced \nHomecoming Celebrates the 1886 Return of Chief Little Priest\nThe United States government forced the Ho-Chunk to give up portions of their land in the early 1800s. The tribe was relocated repeatedly for the next 50 years from Wisconsin to Iowa to Minnesota to South Dakota before being allowed to settle in Nebraska. Many eventually returned to Wisconsin and now comprise the federally recognized Ho-Chunk Nation.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nAfter settling in their new homeland\, a group of Ho-Chunk warriors including their last war chief\, Chief Little Priest\, enlisted in the U.S. Army at the request of General Alfred Sully who needed help with battles against Lakota\, Northern Cheyenne\, Northern Arapahoe\, and the Santee Dakota Bands. \nAccording to the Nebraska Education on Location website\, even though Chief Little Priest dreaded the idea of fighting against his Native brothers\, he agreed to fight in order to save his tribe. As a result\, General Alfred Sully used his influence in Washington D.C. to obtain the Winnebago-Omaha agreement. \nThe Winnebago Homecoming Celebration & Pow Wow pays tribute to the return of Chief Little Priest and 75 members of Fort Omaha Scouts Company A\, 34th Nebraska Volunteers in April 1886. Chief Little Priest\, who had been wounded in battle\, died later in September. \nThe Winnebago celebration began in July of 1886 when Grey Wolf\, Chief Little Priest’s brother\, held a celebration of his brother’s life and notable achievements. Chief Little Priest walked on two months after the celebration in September 1886 from wounds he received as an army soldier.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Winnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration on the last Thursday – Sunday of July at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Winnebago\, Nebraska. \n \nTags: Winnebago Homecoming Powwow and Celebration\, Winnebago Homecoming Celebration\, Winnebago Homecoming Powwow\, Winnebago Homecoming Pow Wow\, Nebraska Powwow\, Nebraska Pow Wow \nView Other Nebraska Pow Wows

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Community hosts the Traditional Mdewakanton Wacipi (Flandreau Pow Wow) every July on third weekend (Friday – Sunday). The Flandreau Pow Wow begins with the Grand Entry of all the dancers entering the arena\, led by the flag bearers. \n\nFlandreau Pow Wow (Wacipi)\nA Pow Wow (Wacipi in Dakota language) was originally a spring event to celebrate the seasonal renewal of life. People would congregate to sing\, dance\, renew old friendships and form new ones. Pow wows had religious significance as an opportunity for families to hold naming and honoring ceremonies. The term pow wow is traced by some to the Algonquin language and is thought to have been used by non-Indians to mean\, in general a council or meeting. \nToday\, pow wows are still very much a part of the lives of many Native Americans around the country. While some pow wows begin as early as March\, the pow wow season runs from June until September. Pow wows are held every weekend\, often at several locations during peak periods. Many families pack up and “go on the circuit\,” camping out and enjoying the traditional celebration activities of singing\, dancing and seeing old friends not seen since the previous season. Whether you are “on the circuit\,” or just visiting to see what the excitement is all about\, you are sure to enjoy your time at the Flandreau Pow Wow. \nPow Wow Details\nFree Admission / Session Pay Out\n1st 20 Drums Guaranteed Drum Split\nMeals – Provided Friday and Saturday \nGrand Entry: \nFriday: 7:00 pm\nSaturday: 1:00 pm & 7:00 pm\nSunday: 1:00 pm \nRegistration Opens: Friday 3:00 pm; Saturday 9:00 am\nFlag Raising: Friday 9:00 am; Saturday 9:00 am; Sunday 9:00 am \nFlandreau Pow Wow Mini Gallery\n\n \nPowwow Head Staff\nEyapaha: To Be Announced\nArena Director: To Be Announced\nHost Drum: To Be Announced\nColor Guard: To be announced\nMeals – provided Saturday and Sunday\nPrincess Contest: To Be Announced \nFlandreau Pow Wow (Wacipi) Location:\nFlandreau Wacipi Grounds\nNorth of Flandreau off Highway 13\nFlandreau\, SD \nHost Hotel: Royal River Casino\, 877-912-LUCK; ask for Powwow Rate. \nFor more information: \nEmail: flandreauwacipi@fsst.org\nPhone: Mike Wakeman Phone: 605-530-0236\nVendor Information: Mike Wakeman 605-530-0236 \nThe Flandreau Powwow is a family friendly event. Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow is a three day celebration of traditional Native American culture – a place and time where local people can observe and learn about that culture and a bridge of friendship between the former and present inhabitants of the Wallowa County. For three days\, experience traditional Native American songs\, dances and spectacular traditional regalia. Outside the dance arena\, dozens of concessionaires will sell food\, Native American crafts and other items. \n\nNez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow & Friendship Potluck\nAlong the river\, participants camp during the pow wow\, many setting up teepees. The sight of teepees along the river after many years’ absence is wonderful. On the last day of the festival there is a friendship feast. The Native American community provides salmon\, deer and elk\, with locals bringing pot luck dishes. For the deer and elk\, a group of Indians come early and exercise their treaty rights by hunting for the game for the feast. A local committee prepares the fish and game. \nGeneral Information\nAll Drums Welcome & Paid\nFree camping\nRVs & Tents Welcome\nConcessions Welcome – Call office \nNez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow Mini-Gallery\n\n \nTamkaliks Celebration Powwow Event Schedule\nFriday\n7:00 p.m. Roll Call & Social Dancing\nMaster of Ceremonies: Thomas Morningowl & Fred Hill \nSaturday\n9:00 a.m. Horse Parade\n1:00 p.m. Roll Call\n7:00 p.m. Roll Call\nContest Dancing\nOwl Dance Special ($1000 Prize Money) \nSunday\n9:00 a.m. Washat Services\n12:00 p.m. Friendship Feast\n2:00 p.m. Roll Call\nChampionship Dancing \nLocation\nTamkaliks Powwow Ground\n70956 Whiskey Creek Road\nWallowa\, OR 97885\n(541) 886-3101 \nFor More Information: 541-886-3101 tamkaliks@gmail.com \nAbout the Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow & Friendship Potluck\nIn 1990\, Taz Conner\, a descendant of Old Chief Joseph (Tuekakas)\, was invited by the City of Wallowa to help them plan some kind of Native American festival in Wallowa. It was decided that a friendship potluck and powwow would be the most appropriate event. Since that time\, a group of ten to fifteen local volunteers have met\, planned\, and worked nearly year-round to conduct the event. During the powwow and potluck\, about forty to fifty local people and ten to twelve Native Americans help in putting it on. \n\nIn its first year\, 1990\, the Celebration Powwow was held in the high school gym and the potluck on the school grounds with about fifty participants. By the third year it had to be moved to a five acre site and set up our powwow and feast outside because it had grown too large for the gym. In 1998 the Wallowa Band Nez Perce Pow Wow and Friendship Potluck was renamed Tamkaliks (from where you can see the mountains) and moved to the new Wallowa Band Nez Perce Trail Interpretive Center prospective site at the edge of the city of Wallowa.\nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Nez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow & Friendship Potluck\, always the third weekend in July at the Tamkaliks Powwow Ground in Wallowa\, Oregon. \nTags: Tamkaliks Celebration & Friendship Potluck\, Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow\, Tamkaliks Celebration Pow Wow\, Tamkaliks Celebration\, Tamkaliks Powwow\, Tamkaliks Pow Wow\, Oregon Powwow\, Oregon Pow Wow\, Nez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration \nView Other Oregon Pow Wows & Other Native American Events
