Each Year\, tribal members gather on this original Creek tribal land for the annual Poarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow. You and your family are invited to join the festivities and enjoy a brilliant display of authentic Native American dress and exhibition dancing by Tribes from throughout the country. \n\nPoarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow\nPerformances of ancestral dancers in authentic dress are at the core of the festival. American Indian music and dance shows continue throughout the two days. These exhibition dances help visitors understand the meaning of the dances\, and the significance of the dancers’ costumes and accessories. Competition dancing in four age categories\, each with a male and female division\, is also a large part of the Pow Wow. \nWatch the crowning of the Poarch Creek Indian Princesses and shop from numerous booths for crafts\, quilts\, and other keepsakes. Feast on Bar-B-Q and corn roasted over oak wood fires on open pit grills. Community churches join in the festivities by providing traditional turkey and dressing dinners\, ham and fried chicken plates. Other choices abound for smaller appetites. \nWhat was originally held as a homecoming for tribal members in 1971 has blossomed into today’s Poarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow tradition for not only the 20 or so tribal nations represented during the annual dance competition\, but also for Alabama residents who come for the roasted corn on the cob\, Buffalo burgers\, merchant tents and family-friendly fun. \nPoarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow Mini-Gallery\n \nOver 10\,000 people are expected to attend Thursday’s activities. But\, there are a few things that first timers should learn to expect. Most instructions will come from the announcer so make sure you’re paying attention. Certain parts of a powwow ask the public to stand for events such as the grand entry\, flag song or honor songs. Some dances\, like intertribals and round dances\, are open to the public and some are not. The announcer will inform the public when they can enter the arena to participate in a dance. Cameras are allowed and welcome\, but occasionally you’ll be asked not to photograph certain events and if you’d like to stop a dancer and take a picture with them\, the proper thing to do is to ask their permission first. \nThe dancer’s outfit is commonly referred to as “regalia” and for Powwow dancers this is a way of life and not a show for the public so respect for their regalia is also key. Please do not touch a dancer’s regalia unless invited. Other than that\, enjoy the music\, dance\, food\, art and celebration that are going on and make sure you have a good time. For more information\, see the Powwow FAQ below. \nMashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow Mini-Gallery\n\n \nHours: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm \nADMISSION OPTIONS\nNote: Foxwoods Rewards Points are accepted at the museum for admission\, dining\, memberships and gift store purchases. \nFree Admission:\nThe following individuals are allowed free admission into the museum during the Veterans Powwow\n– Native and non-native veterans with ID and one (1) guest\n– Native and non-native active duty military and one (1) guest\n– Museum Members\n– Children under 6 \nComplimentary Food: To honor and thank service members we will be offering a complimentary meal of succotash or chowder and corn cakes or frybread to veterans/active duty military and one (1) guest \nAdmission Option 1 (Guests/Visitors) – Daily Museum Admission\nGuests that purchase our daily museum admission have access to the entire museum including the powwow. No worries! Read this Powwow FAQ.”]\nWhat is a Powwow?\nA Powwow is a gathering of men\, women and children from different Native American nations. Friends\, family and new people come together to sing\, dance\, share food\, present their craftwork and socialize. These cultural events preserve Native American traditions and heritage. \nWhat is a Veteran’s Powwow?\nThe respect shown to veterans is an integral part of the Native American culture. Native Americans have a rich history in the United States Military. The veterans of today are shown the same honor and respect as the warriors of times past. At Veterans Powwows\, Native and non-Native veterans alike are especially venerated for their service. \nI’m not Native American\, are Powwows for me?\nYes! Powwows are at their core family and community events and we want to share our culture and traditions with you! \nWhy are there Head Judges?\nPowwows added dance competitions as part of the celebration which began decades ago; where exceptional dancers were recognized with “prizes” like blankets and quilts. This tradition evolved to awarding money as the prize and has since become part of the celebration. Modern day Powwows like our Veteran’s Powwow invite dancers to come and celebrate\, but also to have the chance to showcase their skills and compete against one another which adds to the excitement of the event. Head judges are respected dancers hired by the Powwow committee to oversee the dance competition and insure fair judging of the dancers. \nWhat is an Arena Director?\nThe Arena Director is the individual responsible for keeping track of the singers\, dancers and dance competitions and any other live events happening during the Powwow. The Arena Director works with the announcer to keep the Powwow organized and well-coordinated. \nWhat is the Grand Entry?\nEach powwow begins with a Grand Entry or procession of dancers serving as the “bringing together of tribes.” Dancers enter the dance circle by age and style of regalia. They are guided by two lead dancers\, a male and a female\, who follow the presentation of flags. Similar to the National Anthem\, the Flag Song is the Native American way of honoring traditional native\, state\, and American flags. The audience is expected to stand during this time.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Mashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum on Saturcay\, Veterans Day Weekend in Mashantucket\, Connecticut. \nTags: Mashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum Mashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow\, Honoring The Veterans Pow wow\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum Honoring The Veterans Pow wow\, Connecticut Powwow\, Connecticut Pow Wow \nView other Connecticut Pow Wows

The American Flag enters first carried by a Native American Veteran followed by an Eagle Staff when available. Veterans of all Wars are invited to participate in Grand Entry and they follow the flag. Next\, the dancers who enter according to the dance category. \nRespecting The Drum – The Drum encompasses not only the Drum itself but also the singers in the group. The Drum plays a significant part of Pow Wow. The Drum symbolizes the heartbeat\, in others\, the powerful medicine of thunder. The Drum must always be treated with respect. It is a sacred thing. The beat of the Drum is like a heartbeat\, starting slowly and then beating more quickly.Blind Horse Fall Pow Wow\, Blind Horse Pow Wow\, Blind Horse Intertribal Pow Wow\, Blind Horse Fall Powwow\, Blind Horse Powwow\, Blind Horse Intertribal Powwow\, Alabama Powwow\, Alabama Pow Wow[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion][su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Pow Wow Etiquette”]\nThere are several guidelines that you should know as a courtesy to the Pow Wow participants: \nPLEASE STAND QUIETLY for the Flag Song\, Veterans’ Song and other honoring songs to show respect to all veterans.
