The Grand Entry starts at 7:00 pm! If you want to donate food for the big Powwow feast on Saturday\, just take it to the Pi-Nee-Waus Community Center by 11:45 a.m.. The Nez Perce Tribe hosts the annual Memorial Pow Wow\, an event that brings in a crowd from around the area and surrounding states to reflect and celebrate. \n\nChief Joseph & Warrior’s Memorial Powwow\nThe Chief Joseph and Warriors Memorial Pow Wow is in honor of those lost in the Nez Perce War of 1877 led by Chief Joseph. The war\, that ended in surrender by the strategist behind the fighting and retreat of the Nez Perce\, Chief Joseph began as a way to keep territory protected against settlers. \nEveryone is Welcome – Free Admission | Memorials Start Thursday Morning \nPowwow Schedule (tentative)\nFriday\nMorning Memorials\nLunch Feed\nAfternoon Name Givings and Other Giveaways\n7:00 p.m. Powwow Begins\nSaturday\n10:00 a.m. Whitebird Pipe Ceremony in Whitebird\, ID\n1:00 p.m. Powwow begins\nBreak\n7:00 p.m. Powwow Begins\nSunday\nMorning meal\n1:00 p.m. Powwow Begins\nFinal prizes awarded \nThis Memorial Powwow is truly a family event and a way of life. So – bring everyone and enjoy the sights\, sounds and smells of Native American dancing\, singing\, crafts and food! \nSupport the Chief Joseph & Warriors Memorial Powwow at gofundme\nHonor the Past\, Celebrate the Present\, Shape the Future Identity is a key factor in community wellness\, and our Nez Perce elders instilled in successive generations the importance of perpetuating tribal history\, language\, and culture.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThis tribal identity is taught through many forms of engagement\, one of the most crucial being local community powwows\, which help strengthen our identity. At these smaller local gatherings\, elders impart “heart knowledge” using songs\, regalia\, drums\, and dances\, art forms that have been sustained and performed by the Nez Perce people for many generations. \nBut today\, teaching tribal history is an ongoing battle in the face of modern distractions that compete for the interest of our youth. Recognizing this challenge more than 40 years ago\, and fearing that important tribal history was being forgotten\, a group of tribal members (descendants of the Nez Perces present during the War of 1877) formed a committee and established the Chief Joseph and Warriors Memorial Powwow. \nWhen first developed\, this annual event sparked renewed interest in younger generations and attracted visitors from other tribes. At one time\, this powwow was so popular\, it was one of the largest tribal events in the Pacific Northwest! Unfortunately\, interest has waned over the years\, and the committee has found it increasingly difficult to continue this powwow\, yet these tribal elder DO continue to host it with minimal funding and support. To help renew interest and increase participation in The Chief Joseph & Warriors Memorial and Celebration powwow\, we’re raising funds that will go directly to the committee to help cover expenses. They are a volunteer-based group that relies on fundraising to continue this memorial year after year\, and they gratefully accept any donation amount. Please help us renew this deeply meaningful powwow for current and future generations. Qe’ciyew’yew! The Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Pow Wow celebrates the culture and socializing of American Indians. It is a “living event” and not a “reenactment.” Public Pow Wows invite non-American Indian people to learn and enjoy the celebration\, while also respecting the culture. \n\nNanticoke Lenni-Lenape Pow Wow\nThe Powwow committee reserves the right to require tribal identification cards from competition dancers. No one is permitted to compete without registering. \nTribal Powwows are not an outlet for the non-American Indian spectators to “play Indian.” Spectators should NOT be dressed in regalia. This is not a costume party. It is a celebration that respects the ancestors and the ways of American Indian People. Tape recording of the drums should be done only after asking the drum group. Video recording should be only for personal use\, unless by previous arrangement with the staff. \nAdmission is $15 per car load\, OR $5 per person.
