The event starts Friday night and goes through Monday. The traditional Southern Ute Bear Dance\, once held in March\, welcomes spring and celebrates connections to the Earth each Memorial Day Weekend. The Annual Ute Bear Dance is a social dance everyone enjoys. Origin of the Bear Dance can be traced back to the fifteenth century when the Spanish first came upon the Ute’s in the spring time. When the first thunder in the spring was heard\, it was time for the Bear Dance. \n\nSouthern Ute Bear Dance\nTwo Separate Events\nDon’t confuse this traditional four day Southern Ute Bear Dance at the Bear Dance Grounds with two day Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds that happens at the same time about three miles away. The traditional Bear Dance is held on the Memorial Day Weekend at the same time as the “powwow”. Many dancers and visitors will go back and forth between these two events\, depending on the schedule. \nThe Bear Dance opens at 10 a.m.\, with blessing of the corral at 10:30 and a kickoff lunch at noon. Bear dancing on Saturday and Sunday starts at 10 a.m. and continues through the evening. On Monday the dancing starts at 10a.m. and ends at sunset. The Bear Dance feast is Monday noon just south of the Bear Dance corral. \nPlease Observe these Rules \n\nNo short dresses or baggy pants while dancing\nPhotography\, video and audio recording is prohibited except by members of the Ute Tribes.\nThe Pine River is restricted\n\nFor Bear Dance information call 970-563-0100 x 2301. \nAbout the Bear Dance\nThe Bear Dance originally was held around the middle of March\, usually after the first thunder in the spring was heard and when the Bear came out of hibernation. All the various Ute bands would come together and prepare for the dances\, which were held throughout Ute territories. For the Southern Utes\, the hosting date has been changed to the Memorial Day weekend to cater to the youth who would be out of school for the summer. \n \nThe Bear Dance is the oldest and most historic of the Southern Ute dances. Legend has it that two brothers were hunting when one of them noticed a bear doing a dance while scratching a tree. The bear taught the hunter the dance\, along with songs\, to take back to his people. The songs showed respect to the bear spirit\, and respect to the bear spirit makes one strong. \nThe Bear Dance is still celebrated today with a dance corral\, drums and singing\, festive costumes and good food. The women wear colorful broom skirts and shawls\, many of which are homemade especially for the dance. It’s women’s choice\, so the women ask the men to dance by flicking their shawls toward the men they wish to dance with. It’s a no risk proposition\, since it’s against the rules for a man in the dance corral to refuse an invitation. \nAnother tradition is to wear plumes during the dance. The plumes represent troubles or hardships endured over the last year. The plumes are left at the entrance of the dance corral when the dance ends to signify leaving old troubles behind and starting life anew. \nThe last day of Bear Dance features a feast for all in attendance. Traditionally\, a stew is prepared with meat and vegetables mixed in a large\, round pot atop an open fire. \nThis information about the Southern Ute Bear Dance is from articles on the Bear Dance\, by the Southern Ute Drum. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Southern Ute Bear Dance celebration on Memorial Day Weekend at the Bear Dance Grounds in Ignacio\, Colorado. \nTags: Southern Ute Bear Dance\, Colorado Powwow\, Colorado Pow Wow \nView other Colorado Pow Wows

The Native Americans at Dartmouth (NAD) and Native American Program (NAP) have hosted the Dartmouth Pow-Wow since 1973\, attracting over one-thousand on-lookers annually. \n\nDartmouth Powwow\nThe Dartmouth Powwow\, held each year on Mother’s Day weekend\, serves as an opportunity for members of both the Dartmouth and Upper Valley communities to observe\, participate\, and learn from a broad representation of Native American dances\, music\, food\, and arts. \nThe annual Dartmouth Powwow is a two-day celebration that first began in 1973. Andrew Shipman ’18 and Marina Van Pelt ’18 co-chaired the committee that oversees the event\, sponsored by a variety of organizations\, including Native Americans at Dartmouth\, the Native American Program\, the Native American Alumni Association at Dartmouth\, the Office of the President and the Special Programs and Events Committee. \nThe Dartmouth Powwow draws participants from around the country\, including those from many different tribes. Each tribe has a distinct style of dress\, and with the mix of traditional and contemporary colors\, each traditional dress regalia was unique. The components of a dress regalia are often handmade by the wearer himself or herself or passed down from prior generations. \nMen and women compete in two separate categories. For men\, the categories of dance are typically Fancy Dance\, Northern Traditional\, Southern Straight and the Modern Grass. For women\, categories typically include Traditional Buckskin or Cloth\, Fancy Shawl and Jingle Dress. \nAlmost two dozen vendors will surround the dance arena\, offering a wide variety of native crafts. Fry Bread\, a round disk of unsweetened fried dough\, is a native food favorite at this\, and all other powwows where it is found. If you see lines in front of a booth\, there’s a good chance they offer some type of fry bread. \nDartmouth Powwow Mini Gallery\n\n \nCome experience the sights\, sounds and smells of the Dartmouth Powwow\, including dancing\, drumming and singin\, beautiful dance regalia – all coming together on The Green. Since 1972\, the Dartmouth Powwow has brought together all facets of the community. The Powwow is an opportunity for students\, faculty\, staff\, administration and the Upper Valley to see and participate in Native American Culture from many different tribes and traditions. This north Georgia tradition features many favorite activities for all audiences\, including a Native American dance competition; warriors on horseback; Native film and TV stars; hoop dancers and Aztec dancers; tipis\, wigwam and living Indian village and displays; Northern Plains encampment; primitive skills; environmental and wildlife displays; Native American artisans; Save the Horses rescue group; train rides and other activities for children; Mother’s Day Honor Dance and much more. The grand entry will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. \n\nCherokee County Indian Festival & Mothers Day Powwow\nThe Cherokee County Indian Festival & Mothers Day Powwow features some of the finest Native American and non-Native artisans and crafters on the Powwow Trail and where we monitor our crafters on the merits of their wares\, we stress for the buying audience to share in our oversight. Where we are not opposed to foreign trade\, we showcase Indigenous wares of the Americas\, hence the theme of our event\, not Taiwan\, China\, Korea\, Japan or the Philippines. \nVisitor Participation\nWe will host several dance games and friendship dances throughout the weekend that require audience participation. There is no need to be shy as Native America was founded on the understanding of our relationship with one another and good times and laughter are the best medicine on earth. You are going to love it because you can wander through all the cool primitive skills village sites where you can learn or participate in earth cooking\, flint napping\, archery\, blowgun demonstrations\, fire-by-friction\, brain tanning and lots more. \nFood will be served throughout the day and is scheduled to include Native American cuisine such as buffalo burgers\, gator tail\, roasted corn\, Indian frybread\, Indian tacos and other dishes. We do have some bleacher seating but you are welcome to bring a fold-up lawn chair in case the bleachers are full. \nPublic Welcome – Rain or Shine Event – No Pets \nHours\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.\nSunday: 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.\nRain or Shine Event \nAdmission\nAdults (13 & up): $15\nChildren (6 -12): $5\n5 years and under: Free\nWeekend pass $20 at gate \nNative American Dance Competition\nNative dancers only; see dance competition rules and prize money breakdown.
