The pow wow is important\, not only as a celebration of our Native American culture\, song and dance but also\, more importantly\, helps to fund the Nellie Tucker Scholarship. The Nellie Tucker scholarship\, administered through the AICMC\, provides funds for local Native students who are trying to further their education. \nRain or Shine – No Pets – Contest Dancing \nHours\nSaturday 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM\nSunday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nAdmission: \nPre-Sale Tickets $1.00\nFront Gate Adult Admission $3.00\nFront Gate Kids & Elders Admission $1.00 \nLocation\nMariposa County Fairgrounds\n5007 Fairgrounds Road\nMariposa\, CA 95338 \nSeveral dance performances and contests are featured at the Mariposa Pow Wow. The number of categories varies among regions according to local traditions and to the number of dancers. Dancers are judged on their regalia\, as well as their dancing style. Dancing out of beat\, losing regalia\, or failing to stop on the fast drum beat can disqualify a dancer. The age categories being with Tiny Tots which are children five years old and under\, Boys and Girls ages 6 to 11 are next\, then Boys and Girls ages 12-17. The adult categories are divided between men and women ages 18 to 49. The Golden Age category is for men and women over 50. \nAbout the Grand Entry\nThe Grand Entry begins each session with a procession of dancers. The Flag Bearers lead the procession carrying the Eagle Staff\, American Flag\, Canadian Flag\, and frequently\, the MIA-POW Flag. Being a Flag Bearer is an honor usually given to a veteran\, a respected traditional dancer\, or a traditional elder. Indian Royalty are next\, consisting of tribal and organizational princesses and other dignitaries. The Head Dancers lead a single file procession of dancers arranged by category and age. Everyone is asked to stand during the Grand Entry and men should remove their head coverings unless it has an eagle feather. After all the dancers are in the arena\, a flag song is sung to honor the Eagle Staff and the flags. Then a respect person\, usually an elder\, offers a prayer. This is followed by a victory song during which the Eagle Staff and flags are placed in their standards. At this time\, the Master of Ceremonies will introduce the Head Dancers and Royalty. \nMariposa Pow Wow Head Staff\nMASTER OF CEREMONIES: To Be Announced\nARENA DIRECTOR: To Be Announced\nHOST DRUM: To Be Announced\nHEAD MAN: To Be Announced\nHEAD WOMAN: To Be Announced\nTEEN BOY: To Be Announced\nTEEN GIRL: To Be Announced\nTINYTOT BOY: To Be Announced\nTINY TOT GIRL: To Be Announced \nMariposa Pow Wow Schedule (subject to change)\nSATURDAY \n10:00 AM Gates Open\n12:00 PM Grand Entry\n1:00 PM Mariposa Pow Wow Princess Crowning\nTiny Tot Dancing\, Competition Dancing\, Inter-Tribal Dancing\n6:00 PM Dinner Break\, Miwuk Dancing\n7:00 PM Grand Entry\n8:00 PM Competition Dancing\nspacerAdult Categories\nInter-Tribal Dancing\n10:00 PM Closing Ceremonies \nSUNDAY\n10:00 AM Gates Open\n11:00 AM Grand Entry & Opening Prayer\n12:00 PM Competition Dancing\n3:30 PM Awards Ceremony\n7:00 PM Grand Entry\n4:00 PM Closing Ceremonies \nFor More Information\nMariposa Powwow Committee: Call 209-721-2244; Email mariposapowwow@gmail.com \nAbsolutely no smoking\, drugs or alcohol allowed. The Ohlone Big Time Gathering is the Ohlone’s annual powwow as California Indians had Gatherings instead of Powwows historically. Hosted by the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe\, the three-day event usually held on the last weekend in April that annually draws an average of 2\,000 people and tribal representatives from both East Coast and West Coast tribes. It is a chance to make connections\, meet family and friends\, and most importantly\, to show the local community that the Ohlone are still here. \n\nOhlone Big Time Gathering and Powwow\nJoin us at the Ohlone Big Time Gathering and Powwow as we celebrate our culture with dancing\, food\, cultural displays and ceremonies. The event also includes vendor crafts and food booths. Drummers\, dancers and the public are encouraged to come out and participate in the festivities taking place at the Tony Cerda Park in Pomona. The Ohlone Big Time Gathering and Powwow is a family friendly\, free event\, so bring everyone and your friends. Seating is limited so bring your own folding chairs. In the years to follow\, the Powwow has been the culminating event for the Native American Culture Days events and programs put on by the Cross Cultural Center. \nThe UC Davis powwow is a nationally recognized event that has benefited the campus since its inception and continues to be the premier cultural event for Native Americans and Indigenous peoples in the surrounding local community. Our powwow has hosted and showcased vendors\, dancers\, judges\, head staff\, drum groups and attendees from not only all over California but all throughout Indian Country. \nThe powwow provides an opportunity for many Native American youth\, families and community members to join UC Davis in celebration of our cultural traditions and practices. It has served as an excellent recruitment event for prospective undergraduate and graduate students and retention tool for Native students currently enrolled at UC Davis. For some community members the UC Davis powwow may be their first experience on a college campus where they get to see there is a strong Native American presence and community on campus. \nDavis students who are involved with the planning of the powwow are able to maintain their roots and build a stronger connection to their identity while navigating their experience as an Indigenous scholar in a Western educational institution. The American Flag enters first carried by a Native American Veteran followed by an Eagle Staff when available. Veterans of all Wars are invited to participate in Grand Entry and they follow the flag. Next\, the dancers who enter according to the dance category. \nRespecting The Drum – The Drum encompasses not only the Drum itself but also the singers in the group. The Drum plays a significant part of Pow Wow. The Drum symbolizes the heartbeat\, in others\, the powerful medicine of thunder. The Drum must always be treated with respect. It is a sacred thing. The beat of the Drum is like a heartbeat\, starting slowly and then beating more quickly.Blind Horse Spring Pow Wow\, Blind Horse Pow Wow\, Blind Horse Intertribal Pow Wow\, Blind Horse Fall Powwow\, Blind Horse Powwow\, Blind Horse Intertribal Powwow\, Alabama Powwow\, Alabama Pow Wow[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Pow Wow Etiquette”]\nThere are several guidelines that you should know as a courtesy to the Pow Wow participants: \nPLEASE STAND QUIETLY for the Flag Song\, Veterans’ Song and other honoring songs to show respect to all veterans.
