This is a family-friendly event; no camping\, smoking\, drugs\, alcohol\, dogs or pets are allowed. \n\nUC Davis Powwow\nCreated in 1969\, the first UC Davis Powwow was hosted in conjunction with the creation of the Native American Studies Department. In the years to follow\, the Powwow has been the culminating event for the Native American Culture Days events and programs put on by the Cross Cultural Center. \nThe UC Davis powwow is a nationally recognized event that has benefited the campus since its inception and continues to be the premier cultural event for Native Americans and Indigenous peoples in the surrounding local community. Our powwow has hosted and showcased vendors\, dancers\, judges\, head staff\, drum groups and attendees from not only all over California but all throughout Indian Country. \nThe powwow provides an opportunity for many Native American youth\, families and community members to join UC Davis in celebration of our cultural traditions and practices. It has served as an excellent recruitment event for prospective undergraduate and graduate students and retention tool for Native students currently enrolled at UC Davis. For some community members the UC Davis powwow may be their first experience on a college campus where they get to see there is a strong Native American presence and community on campus. \nDavis students who are involved with the planning of the powwow are able to maintain their roots and build a stronger connection to their identity while navigating their experience as an Indigenous scholar in a Western educational institution. The UC Davis student organized and run powwow is one of the longest running student powwows in California. \nUC Davis Powwow Mini-Gallery\n\n \nPublic Welcome – Free Event\n* All Drums & Dancers Welcome\n* Contest Dancing\n* Native American Craft and Food Vendors \nHours: Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.\nGrand Entry: Noon \nPowwow Head Staff\nMaster of Ceremonies: Tom Phillips\nArena Director: Art Martinez\nHead Woman: Star Whiteye\nHead Man: Douglas Schofield\nHead Girl: Kiona Young\nHead Boy: TBA\nLead Gourd Dancer: Karl Kimple\nHost Northern Drum: Indian Hill\nHost Southern Drum: So-Ex Style \nLocation\nUC Davis Campus Outdoor East and West Quad\n1 Shields Ave\nDavis\,CA 95616\n916-541-6967 \nFor Information & Accommodations:\nThe Powwow Planning Committee and the Cross Cultural Center is committed to providing an accessible and welcoming environment for elders\, community members\, students\, faculty and staff. The American Flag enters first carried by a Native American Veteran followed by an Eagle Staff when available. Veterans of all Wars are invited to participate in Grand Entry and they follow the flag. Next\, the dancers who enter according to the dance category. \nRespecting The Drum – The Drum encompasses not only the Drum itself but also the singers in the group. There will be a Master of Ceremonies (MC) and Arena Director who help run the event. The MC works with the Arena Director to keep the pow wow program organized and running smoothly. The SDSU pow wow kicks off with Kumeyaay Bird singers followed by the Gourd Dance and Grandy Entry which signals the official start of the festivities. \nKumeyaay Bird Songs have been passed down through generations and are used in times of celebration or grief\, to sing\, dance\, and share culture in the company of friends.\nBird Songs are used in the place of a written history and record an oral history and way of life for Kumeyaay people. Through the use of animal metaphors and allegory\, the songs are used to instruct and imprint collective teachings about practical things such as food\, the environment and geography\, as well as history\, customs\, and social/moral values. \nThe Gourd Dance is a Kiowa Tribe ceremonial dance that honors warriors or veterans. Many of those that dance this style are veterans and the idea is to honor all warriors alive or fallen for their service. Most notable of the the gourd dance is the use of either a gourd rattle or metallic salt shaker rattle and a red and blue wool blanket draped over the shoulders. \nGrand Entry is the official start of the pow wow and all dancers enter the arena. During the grand entry\, the color guard brings in the Eagle Staff which is a symbol of American Indian Nations\, the U.S flag\, state and veterans flags are also represented. This is also a time when we introduce our honored Head Staff and other important guests. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next SDSU Pow Wow at San Diego State Univerity in San Diego\, California. \nTags: SDSU Pow Wow\, SDSU Powwow\, San Diego State University Pow Wow\, San Diego State University Powwow\, California Powwow\, California Pow Wow \nView other California Pow Wows & Native American Events

It is called Wacipi (WAH CHEE PEE) in the Lakota/Dakota language and Ni-mi-win in Anishinabe (Chippewa/Ojibwa) language. This celebration is a time when people of all ages can gather together\, to sing\, dance\, renew old friendships\, make new friends\, and share the beauty of life.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nToday\, there are two styles of powwow celebrations: the traditional powwow and the contest powwow. The traditional powwow is a social event where tribal ties are encouraged and reinforced. Accomplishments and achievements are acknowledged in a community setting with one’s family and friends present to witness and participate in the event. These events are driven by American Indian cultures and are used to pass on traditional values of honor to the young people. \nThe contest powwow is a recent phenomenon that incorporates tradition into the competition of dancing and singing. Champion dancers and singers from throughout the United States and Canada travel to various powwows throughout the nation to compete for top prizes. During the Gourd Dancing only the Gourd Dancers\, their relatives\, and relatives of Veterans should be in the Pow Wow arena. \nGrand Entry\, Intertribal & Contest Dancing – This is the entry of all the people entering the dance arena or the sacred circle. During the Grand Entry\, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the circle. Following the veterans are other important guests of the Pow Wow – including tribal chiefs\, Princesses\, elders\, and Pow Wow organizers. Next in line are the men dancers. The men are followed by the women dancers. Once everyone is in the arena\, the song ends and a song to honor the flag and the veterans is sung. During Grand Entry and the Veterans honor song it is important to native culture that NO PICTURES\, VIDEOS\, or AUDIO recordings take place. Following the Grand Entry\, intertribal and contest dancing (if the powwow includes contests) will follow. ‘Sets’ of songs (and dancing) will be separated by announcements\, specials\, raffles\, and other powwow related ‘business’. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next UCO Spring Powwow in April in Edmund\, Oklahoma. \n \nTags: UCO Spring Powwow\, UCO Spring Pow Wow\, University of Central Oklahoma Spring Powwow\, University of Central Oklahoma Spring Pow Wow\, Oklahoma Powwow\, Oklahoma Pow Wow \nView Other Oklahoma Pow Wows
