Celebrate a cultural tradition during Thanksgiving this year\, with the Poarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow. Each Year\, tribal members gather on this original Creek tribal land for the annual Poarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow. You and your family are invited to join the festivities and enjoy a brilliant display of authentic Native American dress and exhibition dancing by Tribes from throughout the country. \n\nPoarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow\nPerformances of ancestral dancers in authentic dress are at the core of the festival. American Indian music and dance shows continue throughout the two days. These exhibition dances help visitors understand the meaning of the dances\, and the significance of the dancers’ costumes and accessories. Competition dancing in four age categories\, each with a male and female division\, is also a large part of the Pow Wow. \nWatch the crowning of the Poarch Creek Indian Princesses and shop from numerous booths for crafts\, quilts\, and other keepsakes. Feast on Bar-B-Q and corn roasted over oak wood fires on open pit grills. Community churches join in the festivities by providing traditional turkey and dressing dinners\, ham and fried chicken plates. Other choices abound for smaller appetites. \nWhat was originally held as a homecoming for tribal members in 1971 has blossomed into today’s Poarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow tradition for not only the 20 or so tribal nations represented during the annual dance competition\, but also for Alabama residents who come for the roasted corn on the cob\, Buffalo burgers\, merchant tents and family-friendly fun. \nPoarch Creek Indian Thanksgiving Pow Wow Mini-Gallery\n \nOver 10\,000 people are expected to attend Thursday’s activities. Don’t miss a very special powwow honoring veterans\, this Sat at The Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. \n\nMashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow | Mashantucket Pequot Museum\nGenerous support for the Mashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum by our sponsors The Simon Konover Company and The Pepsi Bottling Company. \nPowwows\, like the Mashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum\, are public events anyone can go to. But\, there are a few things that first timers should learn to expect. Most instructions will come from the announcer so make sure you’re paying attention. Certain parts of a powwow ask the public to stand for events such as the grand entry\, flag song or honor songs. Some dances\, like intertribals and round dances\, are open to the public and some are not. The announcer will inform the public when they can enter the arena to participate in a dance. Cameras are allowed and welcome\, but occasionally you’ll be asked not to photograph certain events and if you’d like to stop a dancer and take a picture with them\, the proper thing to do is to ask their permission first. \nThe dancer’s outfit is commonly referred to as “regalia” and for Powwow dancers this is a way of life and not a show for the public so respect for their regalia is also key. Please do not touch a dancer’s regalia unless invited. Other than that\, enjoy the music\, dance\, food\, art and celebration that are going on and make sure you have a good time. No worries! Read this Powwow FAQ.”]\nWhat is a Powwow?\nA Powwow is a gathering of men\, women and children from different Native American nations. Friends\, family and new people come together to sing\, dance\, share food\, present their craftwork and socialize. These cultural events preserve Native American traditions and heritage. \nWhat is a Veteran’s Powwow?\nThe respect shown to veterans is an integral part of the Native American culture. Native Americans have a rich history in the United States Military. The veterans of today are shown the same honor and respect as the warriors of times past. At Veterans Powwows\, Native and non-Native veterans alike are especially venerated for their service. \nI’m not Native American\, are Powwows for me?\nYes! Powwows are at their core family and community events and we want to share our culture and traditions with you! \nWhy are there Head Judges?\nPowwows added dance competitions as part of the celebration which began decades ago; where exceptional dancers were recognized with “prizes” like blankets and quilts. This tradition evolved to awarding money as the prize and has since become part of the celebration. Modern day Powwows like our Veteran’s Powwow invite dancers to come and celebrate\, but also to have the chance to showcase their skills and compete against one another which adds to the excitement of the event. Head judges are respected dancers hired by the Powwow committee to oversee the dance competition and insure fair judging of the dancers. \nWhat is an Arena Director?\nThe Arena Director is the individual responsible for keeping track of the singers\, dancers and dance competitions and any other live events happening during the Powwow. The Arena Director works with the announcer to keep the Powwow organized and well-coordinated. \nWhat is the Grand Entry?\nEach powwow begins with a Grand Entry or procession of dancers serving as the “bringing together of tribes.” Dancers enter the dance circle by age and style of regalia. They are guided by two lead dancers\, a male and a female\, who follow the presentation of flags. Similar to the National Anthem\, the Flag Song is the Native American way of honoring traditional native\, state\, and American flags. The audience is expected to stand during this time.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Mashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum on Saturcay\, Veterans Day Weekend in Mashantucket\, Connecticut. \nTags: Mashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum Mashantucket Pequot Honoring The Veterans Powwow\, Honoring The Veterans Pow wow\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum Honoring The Veterans Pow wow\, Connecticut Powwow\, Connecticut Pow Wow \nView other Connecticut Pow Wows

They were about a mile from the town when they were fired upon by Seminoles. The 5 men left the cart in the hands of the Seminoles and escaped to Newnansville and reported the event at Fort Gillelaud. \n30 armed men were sent out to assess the situation and heavy rain started to fall. Although they did not find the Seminole warriors\, they did find the cart and were able to return to the fort with it. The Seminoles had attempted to burn it but the rain had extinguished the fire. Military spies were sent during the night to discover the location and strength of the Seminole warriors but they did not find them. \nConvinced that the Seminole Warriors must be hiding in the San Felasco Hammock\, Colonel John Warren marched out at the head of 150 men the following morning\, September 18th\, at 6:00 AM to engage the Seminole warriors. His forces consisted of 100 mounted militia men\, 25 former militia\, and 25 United States regualrs with the fort’s 24 pound cannon. Colonel Warren’s forces advanced in three columns\, the right led by Col. Warrren\, the left by Col. Wills and the center by Capt. Tompkins with the regulars and the howitzer cannon.\nWithin three quarters of a mile of the hammock they were met by the Seminole warriors. The battle immediately commenced along the right wing and center. The Seminole warriors attempted to turn the left flank but the men under Leut. Col. Wills drove them back into the thick oak scrub on the border of the hammock and then dismounted and drove them into the cannon’s line of fire. The Seminole warriors then attempted to flank the right but a charge from Capt. Walker and Lieut Bruten’s forces\, drove the Seminoles once again in front of the howitzer. \nThe Seminoles mortally wounded one of the cannon crew as they twice charged the center attempting to take the howitzer\, but were repelled. The Seminoles eventually retreated into the dense hammock where the would have the advantage because the soldiers could not follow them with the cannon. Instead of following them\, the Colonel’s forces waited to see if the Seminole Warriors would return but when they didn’t\, the Colonel’s forces withdrew without further engagement. \nThe battle lasted an hour and a half with seven whites wounded\, one of them fatally. Five horses were wounded and one horse killed. It was reported that some Seminole warriors had been seen to fall during the battle but Col. Warren’s forces were unable to verify any Seminole losses. \nOn the 17th of September\, 1836\, a cart laden with corn and attended by three white men and two black men was on the Picolata road returning to the town of Newnansville (now part of Alachua\, FL).
