The tribe has about 2000 members with council headquarters in tribal land on Buckhead. The tribe maintains a community outreach and recreation center on the site and has held its annual Pow Wow there since 1970. The ceremony opens with a traditional march and dance on sacred ground in honor of elders\, fallen heros and community leaders. Festivities and competitions follow featuring dance\, music\, drums and song. Visitors will enjoy the beautiful hand-made regalia\, often showcasing intricate beadwork\, worn for these ceremonies. An intertribal powwow will take place on both Friday and Saturday evening\, at which the Oklahoma Indian Summer Princess will be crowned and contestants will vie for first place in the dance competitions. \nIntertribal & Competition Powwow Dancing\nThe annual Oklahoma Indian Summer intertribal powwow kicks off with Gourd Dancing at 6 pm Friday and Saturday evenings in the powwow arena of the Bartlesville Community Center parking lot. Adult dance competition includes the categories of Women’s Cloth\, Buckskin\, Northern Fancy Shawl and Jingle (combined)\, Men’s Straight\, Fancy\, Traditional and Grass (combined). At 1 pm Saturday\, the youth competitive dance competitions for the Junior Division\, ages 7 through 15\, and Tiny Tots\, up to 6 years\, begin in the dance arena. Nationally recognized artists will show and sell traditional and contemporary artwork including sculpture\, painting\, gourd art\, pottery and leather goods. A youth art exhibit will also be on display. \nAmerican Indian Storytelling\nRepresenting several Indian tribes\, local women will retell the stories that were handed down through generations to teach children a behavioral lesson in a fun way. A dance was held to ask for aid from the gods before a battle or a hunt. A dance was also held to celebrate joy or to mark a mourning. Dances\, or powwows as they are now called\, are still important occasions for the American Indian. It is an occasion for making new friends and enjoying old friendships. There are not many activities where a great-grandparent and great-grandchild may participate in the same activity as they may at a powwow. \nThe word powwow is derived from the Algonquian term pau-wau\, or pauau\, which referred to a gathering of medicine men or spiritual leaders. European explorers who observed these gatherings pronounced the word wrong and passed on the wrong pronunciation to the Indians when they began learning English. \nThe history of powwows is sketchy as there was a period of time when the gatherings were illegal under the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The modern-day powwow gives Native Americans an occasion to meet\, dance\, sing\, socialize\, honor their Native American culture and share their traditions with non-Indians. \nPlanning an event like the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow can take months. If a powwow or celebration is publicized\, it is open to the public. Sometimes\, it may be open to the public but there is a charge. In that case\, it becomes more of an exhibition display. \n \nPowwow Dances\nThe Gourd Dance\, which is performed at many powwows\, including the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, originated in the 1800s among the Cheyenne\, Arapahoe\, Kiowa and Comanche tribes. The Gourd Clan\, formerly a warriors’ society\, now may include any member of the tribe. The members of the different gourd clans and clubs can be veterans themselves or are representatives of veterans. The red on the blanket which is worn by the dancers represents the blood which was shed by warriors and the blue on the blanket represents victory. \nThe Snake Dance is rich in symbolism. It was thought that because the snake lived so close to the ground he understood the problems of the soil and its need for water. The Indians performed the dance to the snake so he might take a message to the gods to send rain to the plants. The dances portray the snake coiling\, striking\, retreating and returning to strike again. \nOther dances that you will see at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, as well as many other powwows\, includes the Round Dance\, Buffalo Dance\, War Dance and the Flag Dance\, a dance that nearly every Indian tribe has composed in recent years to honor the men and women who have served in all branches of the armed forces during the various wars. Through bird metaphor and allegory\, the songs also act as lessons that instruct tribal members about stages in their lives. They are reminded that there is a proper time to “leave the nest” and start a family; that parents must let go of their maturing children. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe original Cahuilla Bird Songs were composed of more than 300 pieces that formed a cycle of stories. Songs were sung in a precise order that accurately accounted for the chronology of the migration. In a traditional setting where the complete cycle of songs were sung\, the singing began at dusk symbolizing the beginning of the journey and ended at dawn – symbolic of the return home. \nProtocol for singing these songs is less strict in structure than some Native American traditions where only specially designated individuals are allowed to perform certain ceremonies. Today\, tribal descendants with singing talent are trained to sing the songs. Unlike many Native American dances\, bird songs use no drums for accompaniment.
