DESCRIPTION:2019 Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial\n\nRate This Event\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe annual Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial on October 5-6\, 2019 is held at Indian City Ceremonial Campgrounds in Anadarko\, Oklahoma. In honor of warriors and veterans\, the Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial focuses on Native Americans in the military and their sacrifices\, both for their tribe and country. The Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial includes traditional dancing\, a presentation of colors and the singing of a war mother’s song. The Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society\, known as the Ton-Kon-Gah\, was established many generations ago to honor veterans. This historic event dates back to over 200 years ago. \n\nKiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial\nNOTE: This is a video “Slide Show” as movie-type videos are not permitted. \nCome to the Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial to witness traditional events including a special dance that is actually a re-enactment of an early 1800s battle. During the dance\, visitors to this event will witness pistol and rifle fire\, raised lances and the beating of ceremonial drums. The drumbeat gradually increases until a tribesman rushes into the dance and strikes the drum. After stopping the drumbeat\, he must then tell a personal war story. \nVisitors to the Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial will hear keynote speakers and receive a free lunch at noon each day of the event. The event is free and open to the public. \nVideotaping is not allowed at the event\, and although photography is allowed\, permission must be obtained first. \nAbout the Kiowa Black Leggings Society\nMany theories attempt to explain how the Kiowa Black Leggings received their name. Legend has it that the Kiowa received blackened legs from running back onto a battlefield after it had been burned by fire – the tribe keeps this battle-worthy tradition alive by wearing black leggings or painting their legs black. During the ceremony\, tribe members also carry a lance\, each one decorated to reflect the owner’s military past. However it originated\, the name Black Leggings stuck\, and the society became one of the best horse-mounted forces on the plains. \nToday\, society members wear authentic regalia that includes a black string shawl on the waist\, a red cape draped over the shoulders\, a decorated lance or spear and black paint or leggings used to darken the legs from the knees down. The adornment each member chooses to place on their lance represents their individual military experience. \nLocation\nIndian City Ceremonial Campgrounds\nAnadarko\, OK 73005\n405-247-8896 \nFor More Information: Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society\nCall (580) 755-0315; Email kiowablackleggings@gmail.com \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial at Indian City Ceremonial Campgrounds in Anadarko\, Oklahoma. \nTags: Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonial\, Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society\, Ton-Kon-Gah\, Oklahoma Powwow\, Oklahoma Pow Wow \nView Other Powwows in Oklahoma

The first ever Honolulu Intertribal Powwow began in October 1974 with a small group of interested Native American individuals living in Honolulu who longed for a place to celebrate their culture through music\, drumming\, dance\, food and native arts and crafts. Many came to Honolulu via military service\, new job opportunities\, enrolling in school\, marriage or through adoption. Presently\, the Honolulu Intertribal Powwow is being sponsored through the Oahu Intertribal Council (OIC). We are currently working to revive and restore the Honolulu Intertribal Powwow to its formative years by working closely with our elders\, participating in community and cultural events on Oahu and building our Native relationships with the Island of Hawaii\, Kauai\, and Maui powwows. It’s Powwow Time\, make your plans now to attend the Annual Honolulu Intertribal Powwow this October! \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t forget the next Honolulu Intertribal Powwow in Honolulu\, Hawaii. \nTags: Honolulu Intertribal Powwow\, Honolulu Intertribal Pow Wow\, Hawaii Powwow\, Hawaii POw Wow \nView other Hawaii Powwows

They felt the need to maintain a sense of Indian-ness\, recapture roots and become more conscious of their rights as Native Americans. In February 1972\, after several years of planning\, the Council was incorporated as a non-profit organization under the laws of Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Council was to operate from offices in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh until July\, 1976 when it moved to its present headquarters in Dorseyville\, Pennsylvania. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next COTRAIC Pow Wow at Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center in Dorseyville\, Pennsylvania the last full weekend of September. \n \nTags: COTRAIC Pow Wow\, COTRAIC Powwow\, COTRAIC Pow Wow Dorseyville Pennsylvania\, COTRAIC Powwow Dorseyville Pennsylvania\, COTRAIC Pow Wow Dorseyville PA\, COTRAIC Powwow Dorseyville PA\, Pennsylvania Powwow\, Pennsylvania Pow Wow\, PA Pow Wow\, PA Powwow \nView other Pennsylvania Powwows

The [general public] lacks the awareness about the health status and issues that Indian people face. To educate the general public about our Indian health issues\, NPAIHB started holding a “powwow\,” a traditional way to communicate our culture and Indian Health education. We provide the public with information on many cultural issues that influence the delivery of health care. We ask other Portland Area Tribal organization such as the Native American Rehabilitation Association- (NARA)\, Native American Youth Association – (NAYA)\, and the Native Indian Child Welfare Association – (NICWA) to collaborate with our event. All of the Indian organizations contribute in various ways\, through providing speakers\, resource materials\, or event awareness\, and equipment\, as needed. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Dancing in the Square Powwow in September at Pioneer Square in downtown Portland\, Oregon. \n \nTags: Dancing in the Square Powwow\, American Indian Day Celebration\, Oregon Powwow\, Oregon Pow Wow\, Portland Powwow\, Portland Pow Wow\, Portland \nView Other Oregon Pow Wows & Other Native American Events

Seating is set up around the area where the intertribal dancing is to take place is for the dancers\, not the spectators\, so bring your own lawn chairs. It is good to ask before taking a picture out of respect for those who may have religious reasons for avoiding photos. No one should ever enter the dance arena unless invited. Do not touch the clothing of any dancer. A good rule of thumb is to wait for the reaction of the Native onlookers. If they clap\, then everyone claps. Most of the time the emcee will tell the audience what is going on and what to do. \n\nMedicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\nAttending a powwow gives spectators the opportunity to glance into the history of Native Americans\, a glimpse of a centuries-old tradition and a chance to gaze upon the beauty of their regalia while listening to the rhythmic beat of their drums and their voices lifted in song. \nFood vendors will also be on-site at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow providing the always popular Indian tacos and fry bread. A dance was held to ask for aid from the gods before a battle or a hunt. A dance was also held to celebrate joy or to mark a mourning. Dances\, or powwows as they are now called\, are still important occasions for the American Indian. It is an occasion for making new friends and enjoying old friendships. There are not many activities where a great-grandparent and great-grandchild may participate in the same activity as they may at a powwow. \nThe word powwow is derived from the Algonquian term pau-wau\, or pauau\, which referred to a gathering of medicine men or spiritual leaders. European explorers who observed these gatherings pronounced the word wrong and passed on the wrong pronunciation to the Indians when they began learning English. \nThe history of powwows is sketchy as there was a period of time when the gatherings were illegal under the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The modern-day powwow gives Native Americans an occasion to meet\, dance\, sing\, socialize\, honor their Native American culture and share their traditions with non-Indians. \nPlanning an event like the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow can take months. If a powwow or celebration is publicized\, it is open to the public. Sometimes\, it may be open to the public but there is a charge. In that case\, it becomes more of an exhibition display. \n \nPowwow Dances\nThe Gourd Dance\, which is performed at many powwows\, including the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, originated in the 1800s among the Cheyenne\, Arapahoe\, Kiowa and Comanche tribes. The Gourd Clan\, formerly a warriors’ society\, now may include any member of the tribe. The members of the different gourd clans and clubs can be veterans themselves or are representatives of veterans. The red on the blanket which is worn by the dancers represents the blood which was shed by warriors and the blue on the blanket represents victory. \nThe Snake Dance is rich in symbolism. It was thought that because the snake lived so close to the ground he understood the problems of the soil and its need for water. The Indians performed the dance to the snake so he might take a message to the gods to send rain to the plants. The dances portray the snake coiling\, striking\, retreating and returning to strike again. \nOther dances that you will see at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, as well as many other powwows\, includes the Round Dance\, Buffalo Dance\, War Dance and the Flag Dance\, a dance that nearly every Indian tribe has composed in recent years to honor the men and women who have served in all branches of the armed forces during the various wars. This song is the Indian equivalent of the national anthem\, and all should stand when this song is sung. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow in Medicine Lodge\, Kansas. \nTags: Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Pow Wow\, Medicine Lodge Powwow\, Medicine Lodge Pow Wow\, Kansas Powwow\, Kansas Pow Wow \nView Other Kansas Powwows

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians\, sponsors of the Morongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow hope you join us in celebration of our Native American heritage and traditions. This is a time to reaffirm old ways and share in the discovery of new. To our elders we extend a special welcome. Our children look to you for the lessons and Examples in how to carry ancient memory\, tradition\, and culture into their modern world. Our Tribal family is extended today by the presence of members of communities near and far. \n\nMorongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow\nThere are no “spectators” at a Powwow. All who attend are regarded as participants. Each of Us has a place in the circle of people. Within this circle there is no beginning and no end. This coming together is at the heart of the traditional Powwow. \nHistorically\, singing and dancing have always been an integral focus at Pow Wows. Competitive singing and dancing for prize money is a fairly recent development. Through bird metaphor and allegory\, the songs also act as lessons that instruct tribal members about stages in their lives. They are reminded that there is a proper time to “leave the nest” and start a family; that parents must let go of their maturing children. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe original Cahuilla Bird Songs were composed of more than 300 pieces that formed a cycle of stories. Songs were sung in a precise order that accurately accounted for the chronology of the migration. In a traditional setting where the complete cycle of songs were sung\, the singing began at dusk symbolizing the beginning of the journey and ended at dawn – symbolic of the return home. \nProtocol for singing these songs is less strict in structure than some Native American traditions where only specially designated individuals are allowed to perform certain ceremonies. Today\, tribal descendants with singing talent are trained to sing the songs. Unlike many Native American dances\, bird songs use no drums for accompaniment. Rhythm is supplied by gourd or tortoise-shell rattles filled with palm seeds.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nLocation & Directions\nMorongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow Site\n12700 Pumarra Rd\, Banning\, CA 92220\nmorongonation.org\n(951) 849-4697 \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Directions”]\nThe Morongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow is located just off I-10 in Cabazon\, approximately 20 minutes west of Palm Springs. They just cleared out an area to have the dance.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe first Pow Wow was held in a little grove of trees which is now the memorial sitting area. It began just as a recognition of what an important social event the Pow Wow could be and it was one of the first attempts to really bring the two cultures together. The Pow Wow continued in 1995 and then in 1996 when the statue was unveiled the Pow Wow grew considerably. That year it rained and although it turned out to be a beautiful day for the unveiling of the statue\, the Pow Wow had to be held inside Hutchins memorial\, the only time that the Pow Wow had to be moved indoors. \nThe Ponca Nation has its own Pow Wow. The Pawnee Nation has its own Pow Wow. Each one of the six North-Central Tribes has its own Pow Wow. But the way the Standing Bear Pow Wow was set up\, they wanted to give each tribe in this area the opportunity to showcase its own tribal history and traditions. They chose Pow Wows because that was more of a general social event where we could involve a lot of the public. Until 2005 they rotated the event between the six tribes. Since 2006 the six tribes work together organize and host each Pow Wow at Standing Bear Park. There is a permanent Standing Bear Foundation Committee with members from each tribe serving on the committee. This is a special time during the year that the six tribes come together to work together on a major project. Learn more about the Standing Bear Pow Wow[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nThe Ponca City Setting\nThe six tribes that participate in the Standing Bear Powwow are headquartered in the Ponca City area\, making it practical for them to collaborate for the event. In addition to the tribal support for the powwow\, from volunteers to corporate partners\, there is a tremendous amount of support from the non-native community as well. \nStanding Bear Park\nThe Standing Bear Park\, Museum & Education Center in Ponca City honors all Native Americans with a 22-foot bronze statue of Ponca Chief Standing Bear. This outstanding sculpture sits on a 63-acre park that boasts a walking trail among native grasses and wildflowers\, a peaceful memorial grove\, a pond and outdoor interpretive center. These elements all come together to tell the history of American Indians In Oklahoma. \nThe Standing Bear Pow Wow is not responsible for accidents. No drugs\, alcohol or firearms are allowed on the premises. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Standing Bear Powwow on the last Friday and Saturday of September next to Standing Bear Park in Ponca City\, Oklahoma. \nTags: Standing Bear Powwow\, Standing Bear Pow Wow\, Ponca City Standing Bear Powwow\, Ponca City Standing Bear Powwow\, Oklahoma Powwow\, Oklahoma Pow Wow \nView Other Powwows in Oklahoma
