It is good to ask before taking a picture out of respect for those who may have religious reasons for avoiding photos. No one should ever enter the dance arena unless invited. Do not touch the clothing of any dancer. A good rule of thumb is to wait for the reaction of the Native onlookers. If they clap\, then everyone claps. A dance was held to ask for aid from the gods before a battle or a hunt. A dance was also held to celebrate joy or to mark a mourning. Dances\, or powwows as they are now called\, are still important occasions for the American Indian. It is an occasion for making new friends and enjoying old friendships. There are not many activities where a great-grandparent and great-grandchild may participate in the same activity as they may at a powwow. \nThe word powwow is derived from the Algonquian term pau-wau\, or pauau\, which referred to a gathering of medicine men or spiritual leaders. European explorers who observed these gatherings pronounced the word wrong and passed on the wrong pronunciation to the Indians when they began learning English. \nThe history of powwows is sketchy as there was a period of time when the gatherings were illegal under the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The modern-day powwow gives Native Americans an occasion to meet\, dance\, sing\, socialize\, honor their Native American culture and share their traditions with non-Indians. \nPlanning an event like the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow can take months. The Gourd Clan\, formerly a warriors’ society\, now may include any member of the tribe. The members of the different gourd clans and clubs can be veterans themselves or are representatives of veterans. The red on the blanket which is worn by the dancers represents the blood which was shed by warriors and the blue on the blanket represents victory. \nThe Snake Dance is rich in symbolism. It was thought that because the snake lived so close to the ground he understood the problems of the soil and its need for water. The Indians performed the dance to the snake so he might take a message to the gods to send rain to the plants. The dances portray the snake coiling\, striking\, retreating and returning to strike again. \nOther dances that you will see at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, as well as many other powwows\, includes the Round Dance\, Buffalo Dance\, War Dance and the Flag Dance\, a dance that nearly every Indian tribe has composed in recent years to honor the men and women who have served in all branches of the armed forces during the various wars. Songs were sung in a precise order that accurately accounted for the chronology of the migration. They just cleared out an area to have the dance.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe first Pow Wow was held in a little grove of trees which is now the memorial sitting area. It began just as a recognition of what an important social event the Pow Wow could be and it was one of the first attempts to really bring the two cultures together. The Pow Wow continued in 1995 and then in 1996 when the statue was unveiled the Pow Wow grew considerably. That year it rained and although it turned out to be a beautiful day for the unveiling of the statue\, the Pow Wow had to be held inside Hutchins memorial\, the only time that the Pow Wow had to be moved indoors. \nThe Ponca Nation has its own Pow Wow. The Pawnee Nation has its own Pow Wow. Each one of the six North-Central Tribes has its own Pow Wow. But the way the Standing Bear Pow Wow was set up\, they wanted to give each tribe in this area the opportunity to showcase its own tribal history and traditions. They chose Pow Wows because that was more of a general social event where we could involve a lot of the public. Until 2005 they rotated the event between the six tribes. Since 2006 the six tribes work together organize and host each Pow Wow at Standing Bear Park. There is a permanent Standing Bear Foundation Committee with members from each tribe serving on the committee. This is a special time during the year that the six tribes come together to work together on a major project. In addition to the tribal support for the powwow\, from volunteers to corporate partners\, there is a tremendous amount of support from the non-native community as well. \nStanding Bear Park\nThe Standing Bear Park\, Museum & Education Center in Ponca City honors all Native Americans with a 22-foot bronze statue of Ponca Chief Standing Bear. This outstanding sculpture sits on a 63-acre park that boasts a walking trail among native grasses and wildflowers\, a peaceful memorial grove\, a pond and outdoor interpretive center. Every year\, visitors come to Fort Omaha to celebrate Native American cultures. The Fort Omaha Intertribal Pow Wow honors the traditional dance\, music\, artistry\, oral history and foods of various tribes across Nebraska and the surrounding region including\, but not limited to\, Ponca\, Omaha\, Santee Sioux and Winnebago. \n\nFort Omaha Intertribal Pow Wow\nDancers in colorful regalia perform throughout the day\, including the Gourd Dance that honors military veterans. That first year\, roughly 100 people attended. Since then\, participation has grown to more than 3\,000 people. The Prescott Powwow\, like many typical Pow Wows\, starts on Friday evening with a single Grand Entry\, followed by Intertribal dancing\, giveaways and specials\, with informative (and sometimes humorous comments) by the MC.  In recent years\, many powwows have become competitive events that can sometimes takes away from the spiritual realm of the gathering. The Prescott Powwow has no contest dancing as its mission is to provide an event that focuses more on the social and spiritual aspects of powwow.Saturday has two Grand Entries\, one in the afternoon and the other in the evening after a dinner break. Sunday has a single Grand Entry in the afternoon. \n\nPrescott Powwow\nFamilies travel hundreds of miles to attend Pow Wows such as the Prescott Powwow. Time and distance are not relevant. The renewal of traditions and reinforcement of the heritage is the important thing. The Prescott Powwow welcomes everyone\, both participant and visitor. This is a free\, family-friendly event\, with free parking also. The powwow hosts vendors offering a variety of artwork and powwow-related merchandise\, such as jewelry and regalia. \nDuring the event\, a storyteller will share traditional American Indian stories and myths and talk about various aspects of American Indian history and spirituality\, including some of the symbolism used in the dance circle and the dancing and drumming. \nOne of the group’s missions is to educate people about the Native American culture. Hosted by Lawilowan American Indian Festival Inc.\, the Muddy Run Pow wow is our outdoor\, end of summer gathering\, that began in 2009 as an addition to the Lawilowan American Indian Festival held mid-winter in March. The pow wow coincides with traditional celebrations held at the time of year for gathering of harvest and provides an opportunity for both observers and participants to connect with American Indian culture on a deeper level in a natural environment. \n\nMuddy Run Pow Wow\nThe two day\, non-competitive\, traditional Muddy Run Pow Wow is one of the largest in the area and draws as many as 350 dancers\, 30 vendors\, and about 2000 attendees each year. Muddy Run Powwow provides a family friendly environment for local native peoples to celebrate the many tribes from which they hail and share their traditions and customs with the public. \nGates will open at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday\, with Grand Entry beginning at noon each day. On site camping is available for vendors and dancers only. Muddy Run Recreation Park runs a public campground near the pow wow site.
