Join hundreds of dancers\, drummers\, guests and volunteers will gather to make the event a success. A pow wow\, such as the Madison College Pow Wow is an event where Native people gather for dancing\, singing\, visiting with friends and relatives\, renewing old friendships and making new ones. Most important\, it is a time to think of the old ways and to preserve centuries old heritage. \n\nMadison College Pow Wow\nAs with all cultures\, the songs cover a wide variety of subjects important to the lives of tribal members- honor and family\, war and conquest\, festivity and spirituality\, sadness and mourning\, joy and celebration. However\, pow wows are not just for Native people. DESCRIPTION:2019 On Wisconsin Spring Powwow\n\nRate This Event\n \n                                    \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                        \n                                    \nAll are invited to the 50th Annual On Wisconsin Spring Powwow on April 6-7\, 2019 at the Alliant Energy Center Arena in Madison\, Wisconsin. Doors will open Saturday & Sunday at 10 a.m. We will provide free buses for UW–Madison students from the Chazen Museum of Art and Dejope Residence Hall every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. The powwow helps bridge the boundaries of the university and all of Wisconsin’s 12 Tribal Nations. The powwow will be a fluid event including dancing\, cultural demonstrations and performances. The Grand Entries will occur at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday. \n\nCentury Market Fair at Locust Grove\nThe masters of ceremonies will keep the crowd informed by explaining what’s happening throughout the Grand Entry and the dancing that follows. Dance ranging from social to ceremonial has always been an important part of indigenous life. The On Wisconsin Powwow will include exhibition\, competitive\, social and intertribal dancing\, which is open to everyone\, including audience members. Although dance styles\, content and the outfits of the dancers have evolved over time\, their meaning and importance have not changed. There will be more than 30 traditional and contemporary American Indian art vendors from the United States and Canada\, an opportunity to learn the importance of regalia through regional Native languages\, and traditional Native foods made by Native food vendors. \nThe On Wisconsin Spring Powwow provides an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and participate in a contemporary Native event\, as well as enhance the Wisconsin Experience by providing the campus and surrounding community the opportunity to share and learn about the culture of the people indigenous to this area. The UW ITSO’s Oshkosh Powwow is your chance to immerse yourself in a cultural experience and broaden perspectives on Native Americans. Dancers and drummers from throughout Wisconsin will participate in the powwow\, representing Wisconsin’s Native American nations. Don’t miss out on authentic Native American food and craft vendors from across the Midwest that are making the trip to Oshkosh this year. \n\nUW ITSO Oshkosh Powwow\nThe ceremonial grand entry will be at 1:00 p.m.and 7:00 p.m. The Oshkosh Powwow is free and open to the public and visitors are welcome to come and go from the arena at any time. And as Indian Nation’s largest cultural celebration of its kind\, Indian Summer Festival has become a gathering place for Native people from all over the US\, Canada and beyond. \n\nIndian Summer Fest at Milwaukee’s Lakefront – 2014 Promo\nExperience the rich diversity and vibrant cultures of Wisconsin’s First Nations at Indian Summer Festival’s Education Day. Join us on Friday from 9:00 am – 2:30 pm on Milwaukee’s Summerfest Grounds. Groups of all abilities are welcome! History\, Tradition\, Language and Contemporary Culture presented just for students in 3rd through 9th grades\, including homeschooled. \nIndian Summer Fest Hours:\nFriday: Education Day\, 9am – 2pm; General Admission\, 4pm – Midnight\nSaturday: Noon – Midnight\nSunday: Prayer Ceremony\, 10am – 11am; General Admission\, 11am – 8pm \nAdmission: \nAdults $15\nElders (60 and over) $12\nChildren 12 and under free. \nThere are lots of family-friendly attractions at the Indian Summer Fest. The Mountain Men bring history to life in a European settler camp reenactment. The Fiddle and Jig Contest brings fiddlers and jiggers of all ages together for a very spirited competition filled with humor (with winners chosen by audience response). \nA part of every festival is the FOOD. Vendors offer traditional foods – frybread\, Indian tacos\, bison burgers\, wild rice\, roasted corn and berry desserts – as well as regular festival favorites. (There will be no standing in line to buy food tickets this year\, since visitors will pay vendors directly.) Foodies also flock to the festival’s food demonstrations \nAt the Circle of Art show\, American Indian artists display works in a variety of media. The Indian Summer Fest Marketplace features Native-inspired goods. Sports fans are drawn to the festival by the amateur Olympic-style boxing competition as well as the lacrosse demos and matches. \nOther spots to visit on the Indian Summer grounds include the Living Cultures of the Woodland area. Festgoers can gain an appreciation of traditional arts by seeing and talking to craftspeople making items such as hand drums\, beadwork\, flutes\, lacrosse sticks and baskets. Visitors also can learn how wild rice is harvested. \nThe Living Cultures of the Great Lakes area highlights the traditional and the contemporary cultural life of the Great Lakes nations\, while Iroquois social dancing also adds to the atmosphere.On Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.\, teachers and students in grades three through nine are welcomed to Indian Summer Festival’s Education Day. While Indian Summer Festival opens to the public at 4 p.m. on Friday\, the grounds are open only to Education Day participants during the day. Early registration is requested by Sept. 1.
