They thought that they were going to the Port of Copano and then on to New Orleans. They were happy and singing. They knew that Colonel Fannin had returned from the Port of Copano the previous day. What they didn’t know was that at 7:00 p.m. the pervious evening\, Colonel Portilla had received word directly from General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to execute the men. About an hour after Portilla received the excution order from Santa Anna\, he received another order from General Urrea to “Treat the prisoners with consideration\, particularly their leader\, Fannin\, and to employ them in rebuilding Goliad.” \n \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Goliad Massacre Reenactment and Living History Program\, and don’t forget that early camping reservation. \nTags: Goliad Massacre Reenactment and Living History Program Goliad Massacre Reenactment\, Goliad Massacre Living History Program\, Texas Revolution\, Battle of Coleto Creek Reenactment \nView Other Texas Revolution Events\nView Other Living History Events

Located in Goliad\, or\, more accurately before 1829\, La Bahía\, lay on the important route from the Gulf of Mexico to San Antonio de Béxar. The presidio served as the customs house for Copano (El Cópano)\, established on Aransas Bay about the same time as San Antonio\, served as the principal port of entry. These three points were the key to control of South Texas. La Bahía had immense strategic importance\, since it guarded the supply line from the coast to the principal city. This new municipality owed its importance to the port of Copano\, forty miles distant\, which had begun to compete with Matamoros for the lucrative Mexican interior trade\, for which the new town of Goliad supplied expert smugglers\, as well as oxcarts and drivers who provided transportation between markets and port. \nAbout the Texas Association of Buckskinners\nTexas Association of Buckskinners is a friendly group that encourages period correct equipment and skills\, while helping new pilgrims get more involved in the hobby. The Texas Association of Buckskinners (TAB) began in the late 1970s when three friends who were interested in survivalism decided to put together a group to focus on survival skills based on the Mountain Men of the Western Fur Trade. After several decades\, it is one of the oldest buckskinning groups in Texas and is still going strong\, with events held the last weekend of January (Deep Winter)\, the third weekend in April (Spring) and the last weekend in October (Fall). New members are always welcome. \n \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Presidio La Bahia Christmas Rendezvous and Trade Fair on the first weekend of December at the Presidio La Bahia in Goliad\, Texas. \nTags: Christmas at the Presidio La Bahia Rendezvous\, Presidio La Bahia\, Texas Association of Buckskinners\, Texas Revolution Events\, Texas Rendezvous\, Texas Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Market Trade Fair \nView Other Texas Revolution Events\nView other Texas Rendezvous\nView other Market Fair & Trade Fair Events

Join the San Antonio Living History Association as they recreate the climactic conclusion to the Texas Revolution Campaign of 1835. The Battle of Béjar Reenactment is hosted by the La Villita Merchants Association and the City’s Department of Cultural & Creative Development. \n\nBattle of Béjar Reenactment\nHours: Daily 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. \nLocation\nMaverick Plaza at La Villita\n418 Villita Street\nSan Antonio\, TX 78205 \nFor More Information\nSan Antonio Living History Asso: 210-273-1730 salivinghistoryevents@gmail.com \nThe Battle of Béjar Reenactment Unfolds . . .\nAs shoppers drift between art galleries and cafés in downtown’s La Villita\, men dressed in hats and coats from the 19th century will hide behind walls and pillars\, staring down their rifles at others dressed as soldiers in the Mexican army. Shouts and booms from gunpowder and cannon fire will fill the air as members of the San Antonio Living History Association re-enact the Battle of Bejar\, the final days of an 1835 siege by Texian rebels against Mexican forces in what was once La Villa de Bexar\, an alternate spelling. The re-enactment is one of several put on each year by the association\, whose members stage events around Texas commemorating the significant events of the Texas Revolution. \nBattle of Béjar Reenactment Mini Gallery\n\n \nThe re-enactors stage the surrender of Cos and one of his officers on La Villita’s central plaza. After a cease-fire ends the volleys coming from both sides\, a re-enactor playing Cos agrees to a parley with another playing Edward Burleson. \nReenactors visit with the public and try and explain different things about history\, not to slant it to one side or the other. The combatants from both sides fought with honorable intention. The Mexicans were defending the homeland. The Texian Federalist Army basically wanted to rule ourselves. \nAbout the Battle of Béjar\nThe battle began on Dec. 5\, 1835\, when Texian leaders launched a surprise attack on the Mexicans. They fought for five days\, and the battle ended with the surrender of Mexican General Martín Cos\, who returned to the interior of Mexico with some of his surviving troops. This was the impetus that initiated [Antonio Lopez de] Santa Ana to start his march on San Antonio to get here in late February. It starts that whole scene of the Texas Revolution.” \nThe Battle of Béjar was literally house-to-house fighting. They were actually digging through walls\, going into the next house and dropping down through ceilings. It was hand-to-hand. Probably the most brutal combat besides the Alamo. The re-enactors put painstaking effort into their research of period dress and their efforts to simulate the battles. Members come from all over Texas and neighboring states to re-enact events at historic places in San Antonio\, San Jacinto\, and Goliad. \nThough most people remember the Battle of the Alamo as the only important battle in the Texas Revolution\, the Battle of Bejar was a point of escalation in the war for Texas independence when the Texans ran the Mexicans out of the Alamo before the Mexicans ran the Texans out. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Béjar Reenactment (aka Capitulation of General Cos) on the 1st Saturday in December each year at La Villita in San Antonio\, Texas. \nTags: Battle of Béjar Reenactment\, Siege of Bejar Reenactment\, Capitulation of General Cos\, Bejar Battle Reenactment\, Texas Revolution\, Texas Revolution Reenactment\, Texas Revolution Living History \nView Other Texas Revolution Events\nView Other Living History Events

It is more than 12 feet taller that the Washington Monument. It weights approximately 70 million pounds. The Monument is faced with Texas Cordova shellstone\, a type of limestone noted for its creamy color and fossilized texture. \nAbout The San Jacinto Museum of History\nThe San Jacinto Museum of History was chartered in 1938 to “preserve and revisualize the history of early Texas.” The Museum’ s collection spans more than four centuries of early Texas history\, from the beginnings of European activity in the New World through Texas as a state in the United States. Emphasis is on colonial Texas as a part of Mexico\, the Republic of Texas\, and the early days of statehood. The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Library houses a collection of more than 250\,000 documents and manuscripts and 30\,000 volumes of rare books and pamphlets. The Jesse H.
