Admission is free for this two day event and is as educational and it is entertaining for the whole family. \nJoin the The thousands of attendees are able to walk along the banks of the beautiful Chippewa River and travel back through time to the late 1600’s and learn about the history of Wisconsin and the people who once lived here. From the Ojibwa to the French\, English\, Irish and Scotsmen\, to the pioneers of the western frontier. You will see pre-1840 Fur trade and Civil War camps and Artillery. \nVisitors can sit with a blacksmith\, a Spinner of wool or a Dyer or Cloth and other living history demontratons. You can try your own hand at making an arrowhead or starting a fire without a match. The Chippewa River Rendezvous offers everyone the opportunity to experience life in a tipi\, a single pole lodge or a Civil War sibly and learn how our everyday items were made: soap\, clothing\, bows and arrows\, bullets and knives. Or visit a trapper camp as he shares his knowledge of trapping\, skinning\, preserving hides and trading furs. \nIn addition\, The Chippewa River Rendezvous features primitive games and competitions for all ages including Frying Pan Toss\, Hawk & Knife Throwing\, Liars Contest\, Treasure Hunt in the Hay\, and Cat and Mouse. This historical place was the center of fur trade activity and the Native America Ojibwe heritage. The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. When the North West Company first arrived\, they built a trading post where the Indian population and the French explorers bartered for furs\, primarily beaver fur which was incredibly cherished among the European market. Fur traders traveled hundreds of miles and portaged in every direction anticipating the rendezvous\, also known as a meeting place where trading and bartering took place. After furs and other products\, were traded\, the furs were then carried along the Yellow River onto Montreal and then eventually to Europe. At the end of the 1805 trading season\, the fur traders loaded their canoes\, traveled along the Yellow River and never returned to Fort Folle Avoine. The 19th-century North American fur trade\, when the industry was at its peak of economic importance\, involved the development of elaborate trade networks and companies.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThis fur trade became one of the main economic ventures in North America attracting competition among the French\, British\, Dutch\, Spanish\, and Russians. Indeed\, in the early history of the United States\, capitalizing on this trade\, and removing the British stranglehold over it\, was seen as a major economic objective. Many Native American societies across the continent came to depend on the fur trade as their primary source of income. By the mid-1800s\, however\, changing fashions in Europe brought about a collapse in fur prices. The American Fur Company and some other companies failed. \nIn canoe-based fur trade areas\, one type of rendezvous is associated with the voyageur and canoe-based fur trade business which was largely in Canada and the states in the US around the Great Lakes\, especially in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These Voyageur Rendezvous were generally at a transportation transfer point within in a wilderness route that could not be traversed in one season run by and including the fur trade of only a single company. The transfer was the dominant reason for holding the rendezvous although they included other meetings and revelry.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nWho were the Voyageurs?\nVoyageur is a French word\, meaning “traveler”. Voyageurs were French Canadians who engaged in the transporting of furs by canoe during the fur trade years. From the beginning of the fur trade in the 1680s until the late 1870s\, the voyageurs were the blue-collar workers of the Montreal fur trade. At their height in the 1810s\, they numbered as many as 3\,000 men. Hired from farms and villages of the St. Lawrence Valley\, most spoke French and generally could not read or write. These men agreed to work for a number of years in exchange for pay\, equipment\, clothing and “room and board.” Most voyageurs would start working when they were in their early twenties and continue working into their sixties. Sometimes being a voyageur was a family tradition.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nHard working and tough\, voyageurs provided the power to move the canoes forward\, paddling at a rate of 40-60 strokes per minute\, often 16-18 hours a day. They were also required to carry a minimum of 180 pounds on their backs\, as both trade goods and furs were placed into standard weight bundles of 90 pounds each\, and each voyageur was required to carry two bundles\, though some carried even more. Twelve beaver hides paid the wages for a common voyageur for the year.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nAbout Fort Michilimackinac \nFort Michilimackinac was an 18th-century French\, and later British\, fort and trading post at the Straits of Mackinac; it was built on the northern tip of the lower peninsula of the present-day state of Michigan in the United States. All re-enactors from the French & Indian War through the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade are welcome. \n\nMille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous\nSince 1993\, the Mille Lacs History Festival and Rendezvous has been held in late June in a rolling field in the woods south of Mille Lacs Lake. The event produces a bloom of white canvas in the form of tents in the style of 200 years ago. The rendezvous has become a highly regarded living history event within Minnesota. It’s a regular destination for up to 150 living history participants living in a frontier city of 55 to 75 primitive camps\, and for many\, a yearly reunion. \nA big part of the experience is the camaraderie among the re-enactors\, known as voyageurs and buckskinners\, while the other is the passion of demonstrating skills and crafts of 200 years ago to kids of all ages. The fur trade era is well connected to the Mille Lacs area\, and there were multiple trading posts\, trails and portages present. And both Aitkin and Morrison Counties were named after fur traders. \nThe Rendezvous Camp is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.\, with a donation needed for entry by those over 10 years old. The location is six miles south of Isle or 16 miles north of Ogilvie on Hwy. 47\, then one mile west on Red Road. \nThe sights\, sounds and smells of 200 years ago come alive once again\, with the opportunity to bring home some Americana of the time that the participants make and sell. There will be food\, blacksmiths\, woodcarvers\, woodworkers\, ropemakers\, music\, a storyteller and surprises. It’s never known just who might show up. The event kicks off with a 21-gun national salute at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Impromptu skills demonstrations and music are ongoing throughout the event by many artisans and primitive campers. \nThis event has been presented each year since 1993 by the Mille Lacs Lake Historical society of Isle\, Minnesota. The Rendezvous features 18th century military units\, traditional craft demonstrations\, period music and dancing\, black powder shooting events and cannon firings – all from the time when France controlled what is now Illinois. Throughout the grounds are demonstrations by independent merchants illustrating their skills\, and displaying and selling their creations. \nFort de Chartres began as a French military outpost. The reconstructed stone fort represents the third fort built by the French\, the first two wooden forts having been destroyed by the Mississippi River. It was this stone fort that the French turned over to the British in 1765 after the end of the French and Indian War. The British abandoned this fort\, moving their territorial headquarters to the nearby town of Kaskaskia. The abandoned stone fort was visited by George Rogers Clark during his expedition during the Revolutionary War. Representing this military tradition are a number of military reenactment units and marching bands representing all three colonial powers. Rifle\, musket\, and artillery competitions are all part of the scheduled programs. \nPeriod music can be found at any time during Fort De Chartres Summer Rendezvous. A center stage is set up within the fort and features various musical groups throughout the day. Many of these groups can be found entertaining visitors throughout the grounds when they are not featured on the main stage. In addition marching military bands with drums\, flutes\, bagpipes\, and other instruments can be seen patrolling the grounds. \nHundreds of tents\, teepees\, and other primitive shelters become the weekend home for the over one thousand reenactors who come to the Fort De Chartres June Rendezvous from across the country. Started in 1969\, the Chippewa County Historical Society of Wisconsin is located in the original convent of Notre Dame Church. The convent was built in 1881. The four-story building has 49 rooms and five bathrooms. When the Chippewa County Historical Society took possession of the building in 1990\, the Sisters had not been living there for two years. The building required a lot of repair. While the Society is using the building rent-free\, it is responsible for the continued repairs and modifications. French explorer Robert de La Salle (1643-87) helped the Peoria Indians build a fort in 1860 to defend themselves against the Iroquois. LaSalle made a deal with the local tribes to protect them from the Iroquois tribal league. LaSalle fostered good relationships with the tribes—Fort Creve Coeur wasn’t around too long though—this original site quickly became abandoned as Tonti left to fortify Starved Rock. Tonti’s mission to Starved Rock was to only end in failure though.
