DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 14th Annual Native American Style Cosby Powwow celebration on August 26-27\, 2017 in Cosby\, Tennessee. The Native American Style Cosby Powwow will feature Drumming\, Singing\, Dancing\, Storytelling and Demonstrations. There will be over 40 crafters from near and far with wonderful Native American Style crafts for you to enjoy. There will be Teepees from the plains and encampments from different eras in time. We will have wonderful dancers in beautiful regalia dancing for the creator for you to behold. The Native American Style Cosby Powwow is an open intertribal event; a teaching powwow for everyone! Please cooperate in this regard.\nAppropriate dress and behavior is required in the arena. Anyone unwilling to abide by this rule will be asked to leave by the Arena Director. (If you are going to dance\, try to wear regalia)\nArena benches are reserved for dancers. Dancers wishing to reserve a space on the bench should place a blanket in that space before the dance begins. Please do not sit on someone else’s blanket unless invited. Uncovered benches are considered unreserved.\nListen to the Master of Ceremonies. He will announce who is to dance\, and when.\nRespect the position of the Head Man and Head Woman Dancers. Their role entitles them to start each song or set of songs. Please wait until they have started to dance before you join in.\nAsk to take pictures of dancers if they are outside the arena\nDo not touch someone regalia or feathers\, these are not costumes\, and they are earned.\nShow respect to the flags and Honor Songs by standing during “special” songs.”\nStand in place until the sponsors of the song have danced a complete circle and have come around you\, and then join in. ( Please remove your hat) While dancing at any pow wow\, honor the protocol of the sponsoring group.\nSome songs require that you dance only if you are familiar with the routine or are eligible to participate. Trot dances\, Snake\, Buffalo\, etc. require particular steps or routines. If you are not familiar with these dances\, observe and learn. Watch the head dancers to learn the procedures. Only veterans are permitted to dance some veteran’s songs\, unless otherwise stated; listen to the MC for instructions.\nThe Flag Song\, or Indian National Anthem\, is sung when the American Flag is raised or lowered. Please stand and remove hats during the singing of this song. It is not a song for dancing.\nPowwows are usually non-profit. It depends upon donations\, raffles\, blanket dances\, etc. for support. Donations are encouraged as a way to honor someone. Any participant can drop money onto the blanket to aid in the powwow expenses. Support the committee and buy raffle tickets.\nCertain items of religious significance should be worn only by those qualified to do so. Respect the traditions of Native American culture.\nPlease remember the Head Staff will be there to help dancers and answer questions. Be respectful of all dancers.\nThe Drums are sometimes closed\, check with the head singer for permission to sing.\nIf at any time you are uncertain of procedure or etiquette\, please check with the Head Staff\, or Arena Director. They will be glad to help you with your questions.\nTake a chair. Most powwows will not have seating for the public or enough seating for everyone. Join us on Memorial Day weekend and step back in time and experience life on the early American frontier. Gates are open to the public Saturday and Sunday 9a – 5p. A small gate fee applies. All proceeds from the gate go towards the upkeep of Fort Crevecoeur Park. There will also be food vendors\, bake sale goods\, and live music. \nThe Historic Encampment is in a separate part of the park from the Craft Fair and Flea Market where the Historic Fort Crevecoeur has been resurrected as to keep with the authenticity of the event. Organized in 1991\, Reenactors of the American Civil War (RACW) is a non-profit living history organization based in Northern California. One of their goals is to stimulate interest in the historical significance of the period in our history termed “the War Between the States”. Comprised of Confederate\, Federal and civilian representatives\, they will recreate the drama and realities of life during this pivotal time in American history — portraying life as it was for members of both armies in the camps\, on campaigns\, and in battle at the Hawes Farms Civil War Days Reenactment. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Thursday and Friday: Civil War Field Trips (School Days) Information”]\nCurriculum is suitable for K-12. Come enjoy the rendezvous named after “the last of the mountain men”. \nCONTACT\nPaul Bolin 208-631-8268\nCharlie Swindell 208-559-7408 \nWHEN\nFriday\, July 15\, 2016 03:00 pm \nLOCATION: Kennedy Ranch\, Cascade\, ID\nCascade\, Idaho 83611 \nAbout Buckskin Bill \nBuckskin Bill\, also known as “the last of the mountain men\,” forged a seemingly primitive life for himself along the banks of Idaho’s Salmon River. Born Sylvan Ambrose Hart in 1906\, he received his nickname from local Forest Service rangers for the tanned deer hides he wore as clothing. Raised in Oklahoma Territory\, he eventually found his way to the Five Mile Bar along the Salmon River in 1932 and made it his home.  \nMostly eschewing the dubious comforts of city life and strangling restrictions on personal freedoms there\, Buckskin Bill chose a more solitary\, utterly self-sufficient life by the Salmon. He fished\, trapped\, hunted\, raised crops\, made his own food and clothing and wine.  \nSylvan Hart possessed even more skills than those demanded by living off the land. He also held an engineering degree from Oklahoma University; studied Latin\, Greek\, French\, German\, Russian\, Swahili\, Portuguese\, Spanish\, and Norwegian; took courses in petroleum engineering as a graduate student; and worked on the top-secret Norden Bombsight at Boeing’s Kansas factory during World War II. He may have lived what appeared to be a simple life\, but clearly he was not remotely a simple man. \nWhen it came to picking enemies\, Buckskin Bill chose a fairly big one: the National Forest Service.  After having lived quietly in his chosen riverside haven for years\, Buckskin bristled when the Forest Service pushed to have the entire place designated as a Primitive Area\, which meant no human habitation whatsoever allowed.  Eventually\, the government was convinced that one man who lived off the land in an authentic manner deserved to stay there.  \nBuckskin Bill died in 1980\, a mountain man to the last. The Buckskin Bill Museum\, located on the Salmon River’s Five Mile Bar\, showcases the actual items he made and used in his lifetime.

White Camp #1250\, Sons of Confederate Veterans is planning the 8th Annual Civil War Reenactment\, The Battle of Temple Junction. \nThe event kicks off on Friday\, May 20 with area school districts participating in living history demonstrations of how soldiers cooked\, slept and camped. \nFull-scale battles open to the public will be held on Saturday\, May 21 and Sunday\, May 22 along with military surgeon demonstrations and cavalry competitions. \nThe Battle of Temple Junction is a fictitious battle\, as Temple was not founded until well after the War Between the States. The purpose of the event is to illustrate how a typical battle was fought and how Union and Confederate troops lived and trained during the war. Reenactors will use either period or reproduction weapons\, uniforms\, and gear. \nThe reenactment grounds will also have food vendors and period vendors\, called Sutlers\, who will sell their wares to the reenactors and the general public

For all of her 78 years Big Ma could never completely shake the fear of openly sharing her heritage\, out of concern that she would be forced to Oklahoma like her ancestors during the Trail of Tears. \nThat secret slipped only after her daughter Mittie Wood started the annual Mother’s Day Pow Wow in her own mother’s honor with the blessing of the Pasco County commissioners back in 1991. “Do you know what you’re doing?” Wood\, now 68\, recalls her late mother asking. “They’re gonna come get us and take us to Oklahoma.” \nWood said the Mittie Wood Memorial Mothers Day Native American Pow Wow\nwas born after her twin granddaughters\, who wore traditional Creek regalia\, started kindergarten and were teased at school. She started voluntarily educating Pasco’s schoolchildren about American Indian culture and soon saw a shift in acceptance. She began planning a powwow to showcase traditions like dance\, storytelling\, blow guns and flint knapping. The first year drew about 600 people over the three days\, she said. Now the turnout is more like 2\,500 to 3\,000 throughout the weekend. \nThe Withlacoochee River Park includes A Creek Village built years ago specifically for the Mittie Wood Memorial Mothers Day Native American Pow Wow\, as well as an arena where storytelling\, demonstrations and performances are held. \nWhile the powwow is dedicated to Big Ma\, it goes out to all mothers. \nBig Ma died a decade after the powwow began\, and her ashes were released in the Withlacoochee River\, not far from the powwow site. The Pow Wow brings together and shares the culture and traditions of Native American people with the community and campus. The event is open to the public and admission is free. (In the event of rain the Pow Wow will be held in the pavilion of the Agriculture Center for Education on West Campus.) \nPow Wow activities begin with gourd dancing at 11:30 a.m.\, followed by the grand entry at 12 noon\, featuring the traditional opening ceremony and honor guard.  The program includes traditional Native American singers and dancers accompanied by drum groups and will honor veterans for sacrifices given to their country.  \nAuthentic Native American arts\, crafts\, jewelry\, painting\, beadwork\, t-shirts and other items from the diverse tribal nations will be offered for sale during the Pow Wow. Native American food will also be available for purchase\, including Indian fry bread and Indian tacos. \nThe MJC club Red Nations and Friends is currently conducting a drive to gather shoes and socks for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota\, one of the poorest communities in the United States. Canupa Gluha Mani\, from the Lakota Sioux of Pine Ridge and Strong Heart Warrior Society\, will be at this year’s Pow Wow to pick up the donations and speak about the living conditions on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Donations of new and gently used shoes\, socks and warm clothing can be deposited in barrels at multiple campus locations through April 17. \nThe Pow Wow\, is an alcohol and drug free event sponsored by Red Nations and Friends\, and the Associated Students of MJC\, and co-sponsored by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wok Indians and the Black Oak Casino and Resort.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Fulton County Museum Living History Faire on March 12-13\, 2016 at the Fulton County Museum in Rochester\, IN. Vendors from all over the US will show and sell historical items pre-1890. Vendor space is limited and will be assigned on a first come\, first served basis upon receipt of application and fees. Early registration is recommended. \nPre-1890 event devoted to Living History and Accoutrements. Trade goods similar to what is sold at Trail of Courage – some of the same vendors.
