Born Sylvan Ambrose Hart in 1906\, he received his nickname from local Forest Service rangers for the tanned deer hides he wore as clothing. Raised in Oklahoma Territory\, he eventually found his way to the Five Mile Bar along the Salmon River in 1932 and made it his home.  \nMostly eschewing the dubious comforts of city life and strangling restrictions on personal freedoms there\, Buckskin Bill chose a more solitary\, utterly self-sufficient life by the Salmon. He fished\, trapped\, hunted\, raised crops\, made his own food and clothing and wine.  \nSylvan Hart possessed even more skills than those demanded by living off the land. He also held an engineering degree from Oklahoma University; studied Latin\, Greek\, French\, German\, Russian\, Swahili\, Portuguese\, Spanish\, and Norwegian; took courses in petroleum engineering as a graduate student; and worked on the top-secret Norden Bombsight at Boeing’s Kansas factory during World War II. He may have lived what appeared to be a simple life\, but clearly he was not remotely a simple man. \nWhen it came to picking enemies\, Buckskin Bill chose a fairly big one: the National Forest Service.  After having lived quietly in his chosen riverside haven for years\, Buckskin bristled when the Forest Service pushed to have the entire place designated as a Primitive Area\, which meant no human habitation whatsoever allowed.  Eventually\, the government was convinced that one man who lived off the land in an authentic manner deserved to stay there.  \nBuckskin Bill died in 1980\, a mountain man to the last. The Buckskin Bill Museum\, located on the Salmon River’s Five Mile Bar\, showcases the actual items he made and used in his lifetime.

SUMMARY:The Battle of Temple Junction
DESCRIPTION:City of Temple’s Parks and Recreation Department along with the Major Robert M. White Camp #1250\, Sons of Confederate Veterans is planning the 8th Annual Civil War Reenactment\, The Battle of Temple Junction. \nThe event kicks off on Friday\, May 20 with area school districts participating in living history demonstrations of how soldiers cooked\, slept and camped. \nFull-scale battles open to the public will be held on Saturday\, May 21 and Sunday\, May 22 along with military surgeon demonstrations and cavalry competitions. \nThe Battle of Temple Junction is a fictitious battle\, as Temple was not founded until well after the War Between the States. The purpose of the event is to illustrate how a typical battle was fought and how Union and Confederate troops lived and trained during the war. Reenactors will use either period or reproduction weapons\, uniforms\, and gear. \nThe reenactment grounds will also have food vendors and period vendors\, called Sutlers\, who will sell their wares to the reenactors and the general public

For all of her 78 years Big Ma could never completely shake the fear of openly sharing her heritage\, out of concern that she would be forced to Oklahoma like her ancestors during the Trail of Tears. \nThat secret slipped only after her daughter Mittie Wood started the annual Mother’s Day Pow Wow in her own mother’s honor with the blessing of the Pasco County commissioners back in 1991. “Do you know what you’re doing?” Wood\, now 68\, recalls her late mother asking. “They’re gonna come get us and take us to Oklahoma.” \nWood said the Mittie Wood Memorial Mothers Day Native American Pow Wow\nwas born after her twin granddaughters\, who wore traditional Creek regalia\, started kindergarten and were teased at school. She started voluntarily educating Pasco’s schoolchildren about American Indian culture and soon saw a shift in acceptance. She began planning a powwow to showcase traditions like dance\, storytelling\, blow guns and flint knapping. The first year drew about 600 people over the three days\, she said. Now the turnout is more like 2\,500 to 3\,000 throughout the weekend. \nThe Withlacoochee River Park includes A Creek Village built years ago specifically for the Mittie Wood Memorial Mothers Day Native American Pow Wow\, as well as an arena where storytelling\, demonstrations and performances are held. \nWhile the powwow is dedicated to Big Ma\, it goes out to all mothers. \nBig Ma died a decade after the powwow began\, and her ashes were released in the Withlacoochee River\, not far from the powwow site. But her spirit lives through her family and the simple message she taught them: “Be proud of where you come from\, no matter where it is.” \nNo drugs\, alcohol\, or firearms. All pets must be on a leash (with owner on the other end). SUMMARY:Modesto Junior College Intertribal Pow Wow
DESCRIPTION:Modesto Junior College will host the 16th annual Intertribal Pow Wow on Sunday\, April 20 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on MJC’s East Campus Quad\, located at 435 College Avenue in Modesto. The Pow Wow brings together and shares the culture and traditions of Native American people with the community and campus. The event is open to the public and admission is free. (In the event of rain the Pow Wow will be held in the pavilion of the Agriculture Center for Education on West Campus.) \nPow Wow activities begin with gourd dancing at 11:30 a.m.\, followed by the grand entry at 12 noon\, featuring the traditional opening ceremony and honor guard.  The program includes traditional Native American singers and dancers accompanied by drum groups and will honor veterans for sacrifices given to their country.  \nAuthentic Native American arts\, crafts\, jewelry\, painting\, beadwork\, t-shirts and other items from the diverse tribal nations will be offered for sale during the Pow Wow. Native American food will also be available for purchase\, including Indian fry bread and Indian tacos. \nThe MJC club Red Nations and Friends is currently conducting a drive to gather shoes and socks for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota\, one of the poorest communities in the United States. Canupa Gluha Mani\, from the Lakota Sioux of Pine Ridge and Strong Heart Warrior Society\, will be at this year’s Pow Wow to pick up the donations and speak about the living conditions on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Donations of new and gently used shoes\, socks and warm clothing can be deposited in barrels at multiple campus locations through April 17. \nThe Pow Wow\, is an alcohol and drug free event sponsored by Red Nations and Friends\, and the Associated Students of MJC\, and co-sponsored by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wok Indians and the Black Oak Casino and Resort.
