French explorer Robert de La Salle (1643-87) helped the Peoria Indians build a fort in 1860 to defend themselves against the Iroquois. LaSalle made a deal with the local tribes to protect them from the Iroquois tribal league. LaSalle fostered good relationships with the tribes—Fort Creve Coeur wasn’t around too long though—this original site quickly became abandoned as Tonti left to fortify Starved Rock. Tonti’s mission to Starved Rock was to only end in failure though. The Tecumseh Rendezvous takes place in conjunction with the Tecumseh Oklahoma Frontier Days Celebration hosted by the Indian Territory Rendezvous Club and is held on the third weekend in September. \nHistorical Background\nThe Rendezvous celebrates the early 1800s when this part of the western frontier was first explored by the young nation of the United States of America. We had recently acquired this land from the French. Many historic people traveled through this frontier including Randolph Marcy and James Wilkerson (a contingent of Pike’s expedition in 1806). \nThis area was made famous by the noted American writer\, Washington Irving\, during his journey through the Cross Timbers\, an area known for its dense forest which Irving characterized as a “forest of cast iron.” Irving was accompanied by Henry Ellsworth\, the new Commissioner of Indian Lands\, and two notable Europeans\, Latrobe and Count DePourtalés. During this time\, a rendezvous would occur\, an event where trappers and traders would gather along with Indian tribes and merchants to exchange goods for skins and pelts. Mountain men would look forward to these rendezvous as an annual opportunity to do business\, restock\, carouse and generally enjoy the company of their peers. Although formal rendezvous did not occur in Oklahoma\, these types of impromptu social gatherings certainly occurred whenever the eastern travelers met with representatives of Indian tribes in this rich and fertile hunting ground. His specialty is making Indian saddles and horse tack. (Yes\, although Indians did ride bareback\, they also made and used saddles) Learning to actually make items helps him learn how Plains Indians lived their lives. Ken has served on the board of the Fort Larned Old Guard and has had several of his saddles and German silver bridles featured in major movies such as “The Homesman” and the forthcoming AMC series “The Son”. His museum quality replica Plains Indian saddles are on display at major U.S. museums and national historic sites. Ken’s presentation will be: “Plateau Saddles and Horse Regalia”. \nScott M. Thompson\, of Spokane\, WA is a retired art teacher\, independent researcher\, and author of I Will Tell of My War Story: A Pictorial Account of the Nez Perce War. Scott’s Presentation will be “Incised Rawhide Techniques” \nMark Miller\, a resident of Montana’s Flathead Valley\, has been involved in creating authentic replicas of old time traditional native style art for over 40 years. Burnside’s North Carolina Expedition during the American Civil War.\nIn late March\, Major General Burnside’s army advanced on Fort Macon\, a fort that commanded the channel to Beaufort\, 35 miles southeast of New Bern.
