Artillery pieces may not be pulled back to camp with a modern vehicle until\nthe camps have closed to the public.\nOnly full-sized artillery pieces are allowed. Carriages must have 57 inch wheels. No mortars or mountain howitzers are allowed.\nArtillery pieces must participate in the battle both days to qualify for a bounty. Demonstration pieces do not qualify for bounties.\nAll scenarios must be approved by the U.S. and C.S. Commanders before the reenactment. Unscripted hand-to-hand combat is prohibited. Do not point firearms at any person.\nYou must provide adequate supervision of powder stores. Powder\, charges\, cartridges\, and primers must be stored in special containers at a safe distance from\ncampfires.\nParticipants under age 14 may not carry or fire black powder weapons of any kind. Participants 14 and 15 years of age may carry black powder weapons with a parent or guardian. Children and civilian reenactors are not permitted on the field during re-enactments\, except for functional musicians (boys 14 or older who can actually play a drum\, fife or bugle). Boys under 14 are not to serve as color bearers during battle re-enactments. Civilian reenactors may request prior written approval from Wade House event coordinator\, Jim Willaert\, before the event to participate in battle re-enactments.\nMounted cavalry units must station at least one unit member near their unit’s horses when public visitors are in camp. Horses will be inspected by cavalry commanders for health problems before being allowed to participate. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health\, horses are not allowed within 500 feet of food concession areas.\nThere will be no unscripted “tactical” combat of any type during the event. Firearms will not be discharged at any time after sundown. Months before the battle\, Blackfish had captured and adopted Daniel Boone\, the founder of Boonesborough. Boone escaped the Shawnees in time to lead the defense of the settlement. The Sudbury Colonial Faire and Fife & Drum Muster opens at 10:00 am with a Colonial encampment\, militia and crafts demonstrations\, and contradancing. We expect dozens of colonial and craft vendors and 25 fife and drum corps. \n\nSudbury Colonial Faire and Fife & Drum Muster\nParticipation in the fife and drum muster is sought after by companies throughout the northeast. These groups include the host Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drum Companie\, local groups including the Middlesex County Volunteers\, William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps\, Middlesex 4-H Fife and Drum Corps\, Lincoln Minutemen\, Stow Minutemen and Regimental Music of Saintonge and other groups. \nThe grand parade of fifes and drums will begin at noon and will be followed directly by a performance by each of the corps attending. The Sudbury Colonial Faire and Fife & Drum Muster is a celebration rather than a competition. The corps appear by invitation\, and attend to share their music and friendship with other Fife & Drum Corps. \nIn the days preceding the Revolutionary War\, militia would usually muster to drill twice each year\, once in the spring and the other in the fall. The militia will execute its manual of arms. Then contra dancers will entertain the morning crowd in the main muster field. Soon after that\, the Sudbury militia will call for an assembly\, the town crier announce that the town of Sudbury had formed a local militia and then introduce the newly elected officers of the Sudbury Companies. Shortly after the colonel begins drilling his militia\, British Regulars will arrive to arrest the newly installed colonel. The militia watch as their colonel is put in stocks and later taken away. They then pursue the Redcoats and exchange musket fire along the service road. A dance was held to ask for aid from the gods before a battle or a hunt. A dance was also held to celebrate joy or to mark a mourning. Dances\, or powwows as they are now called\, are still important occasions for the American Indian. It is an occasion for making new friends and enjoying old friendships. There are not many activities where a great-grandparent and great-grandchild may participate in the same activity as they may at a powwow. \nThe word powwow is derived from the Algonquian term pau-wau\, or pauau\, which referred to a gathering of medicine men or spiritual leaders. European explorers who observed these gatherings pronounced the word wrong and passed on the wrong pronunciation to the Indians when they began learning English. \nThe history of powwows is sketchy as there was a period of time when the gatherings were illegal under the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The modern-day powwow gives Native Americans an occasion to meet\, dance\, sing\, socialize\, honor their Native American culture and share their traditions with non-Indians. \nPlanning an event like the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow can take months. If a powwow or celebration is publicized\, it is open to the public. Sometimes\, it may be open to the public but there is a charge. In that case\, it becomes more of an exhibition display. \n \nPowwow Dances\nThe Gourd Dance\, which is performed at many powwows\, including the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, originated in the 1800s among the Cheyenne\, Arapahoe\, Kiowa and Comanche tribes. The Gourd Clan\, formerly a warriors’ society\, now may include any member of the tribe. The members of the different gourd clans and clubs can be veterans themselves or are representatives of veterans. The red on the blanket which is worn by the dancers represents the blood which was shed by warriors and the blue on the blanket represents victory. \nThe Snake Dance is rich in symbolism. Through bird metaphor and allegory\, the songs also act as lessons that instruct tribal members about stages in their lives. They are reminded that there is a proper time to “leave the nest” and start a family; that parents must let go of their maturing children. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe original Cahuilla Bird Songs were composed of more than 300 pieces that formed a cycle of stories. Songs were sung in a precise order that accurately accounted for the chronology of the migration. In a traditional setting where the complete cycle of songs were sung\, the singing began at dusk symbolizing the beginning of the journey and ended at dawn – symbolic of the return home. \nProtocol for singing these songs is less strict in structure than some Native American traditions where only specially designated individuals are allowed to perform certain ceremonies. They just cleared out an area to have the dance.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe first Pow Wow was held in a little grove of trees which is now the memorial sitting area. It began just as a recognition of what an important social event the Pow Wow could be and it was one of the first attempts to really bring the two cultures together. The Pow Wow continued in 1995 and then in 1996 when the statue was unveiled the Pow Wow grew considerably. That year it rained and although it turned out to be a beautiful day for the unveiling of the statue\, the Pow Wow had to be held inside Hutchins memorial\, the only time that the Pow Wow had to be moved indoors. \nThe Ponca Nation has its own Pow Wow. The Pawnee Nation has its own Pow Wow. Each one of the six North-Central Tribes has its own Pow Wow. But the way the Standing Bear Pow Wow was set up\, they wanted to give each tribe in this area the opportunity to showcase its own tribal history and traditions. They chose Pow Wows because that was more of a general social event where we could involve a lot of the public. Until 2005 they rotated the event between the six tribes. Since 2006 the six tribes work together organize and host each Pow Wow at Standing Bear Park. There is a permanent Standing Bear Foundation Committee with members from each tribe serving on the committee. This is a special time during the year that the six tribes come together to work together on a major project. Federal forces advanced from Knoxville and arrived on the outskirts of Blountville. Union forces quickly occupied the heights overlooking the west side of town; this chosen site was the cemetery – the “City of the Dead”. Union cannons were aligned on the gravesites of the locals and their slaves alike. Reacting to the threats\, Southern forces formed artillery on a knoll near the present-day Blountville Middle School; another line was established by Rebel forces on a nearby hillside in front of the Masonic Hall\, now the site of the maintenance building for the Sullivan County School System. The battle of artillery and cavalry began in earnest at lunchtime Union guns offered the initial volley with the Court House as the first target. The Confederates’ withdrawal was a pre-planned surprise counter-attack\, with fresh Confederate troops awaiting the pursuing Federals. The plan was not destined for success when Union forces discovered the Confederate plot and refused battle; the men in blue retreated to Blountville. That fateful little day left a burning town – a burned jail\, a gutted Court House\, businesses and homes destroyed – Only a few historic structures and homes remained. \nLeft behind were the dead and wounded from both sides as well as a town destroyed. Every year\, visitors come to Fort Omaha to celebrate Native American cultures. The Fort Omaha Intertribal Pow Wow honors the traditional dance\, music\, artistry\, oral history and foods of various tribes across Nebraska and the surrounding region including\, but not limited to\, Ponca\, Omaha\, Santee Sioux and Winnebago. \n\nFort Omaha Intertribal Pow Wow\nDancers in colorful regalia perform throughout the day\, including the Gourd Dance that honors military veterans. Together with local tribe leaders\, Metropolitan Community College leaders began the Powwow in 1992 to culminate a year-long celebration recognizing our nation’s Quincentennial. That first year\, roughly 100 people attended. Since then\, participation has grown to more than 3\,000 people. Since the first powwow\, years ago\, people from near and far flock to Metropolitan Community College’s Fort Omaha Campus for a special event. \nThe College’s Parade Ground has been the permanent site for a celebration of culture and inclusiveness.
