Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \n \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago. Modern day Powwows like our Veteran’s Powwow invite dancers to come and celebrate\, but also to have the chance to showcase their skills and compete against one another which adds to the excitement of the event. Head judges are respected dancers hired by the Powwow committee to oversee the dance competition and insure fair judging of the dancers. \nWhat is an Arena Director?\nThe Arena Director is the individual responsible for keeping track of the singers\, dancers and dance competitions and any other live events happening during the Powwow. The Arena Director works with the announcer to keep the Powwow organized and well-coordinated. \nWhat is the Grand Entry?\nEach powwow begins with a Grand Entry or procession of dancers serving as the “bringing together of tribes.” Dancers enter the dance circle by age and style of regalia. They are guided by two lead dancers\, a male and a female\, who follow the presentation of flags. Similar to the National Anthem\, the Flag Song is the Native American way of honoring traditional native\, state\, and American flags. The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. \nThe Fort Loudoun State Historic Park features a visitor center/museum\, reconstructed Fort Loudoun\, and stabilized ruins of Tellico Blockhouse (1794-1807). Fort Loudoun was constructed by the British Colony of South Carolina to ally the Overhill Cherokee Nation in the fight against the French and to guarantee that trade would continue between the Cherokee and South Carolina. \nBut relations between South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation broke down and the Cherokee captured Fort Loudoun and its garrison. It is thought that the Cherokees destroyed the fort shortly thereafter. The blockhouse served as a gateway (with passes required) into Cherokee land\, a trading post\, and a factory to teach new skills to the Cherokees. \nPicnic tables\, fishing pier\, hiking trails and boat dock are available. In the event that Reenactor Rd. becomes impassable\, an alternate plan will be implemented by event management. \n\nVehicles must be out of camps by 8am Friday morning and remain out of camps until the event closes at 4pm on Sunday. Shouts and booms from gunpowder and cannon fire will fill the air as members of the San Antonio Living History Association re-enact the Battle of Bejar\, the final days of an 1835 siege by Texian rebels against Mexican forces in what was once La Villa de Bexar\, an alternate spelling. The re-enactment is one of several put on each year by the association\, whose members stage events around Texas commemorating the significant events of the Texas Revolution. \nBattle of Béjar Reenactment Mini Gallery\n\n \nThe re-enactors stage the surrender of Cos and one of his officers on La Villita’s central plaza. After a cease-fire ends the volleys coming from both sides\, a re-enactor playing Cos agrees to a parley with another playing Edward Burleson. \nReenactors visit with the public and try and explain different things about history\, not to slant it to one side or the other. The combatants from both sides fought with honorable intention. The Mexicans were defending the homeland. The Texian Federalist Army basically wanted to rule ourselves. \nAbout the Battle of Béjar\nThe battle began on Dec. 5\, 1835\, when Texian leaders launched a surprise attack on the Mexicans. They fought for five days\, and the battle ended with the surrender of Mexican General Martín Cos\, who returned to the interior of Mexico with some of his surviving troops. This was the impetus that initiated [Antonio Lopez de] Santa Ana to start his march on San Antonio to get here in late February. It starts that whole scene of the Texas Revolution.” \nThe Battle of Béjar was literally house-to-house fighting. They were actually digging through walls\, going into the next house and dropping down through ceilings. It was hand-to-hand. Probably the most brutal combat besides the Alamo. The re-enactors put painstaking effort into their research of period dress and their efforts to simulate the battles. Located in Goliad\, or\, more accurately before 1829\, La Bahía\, lay on the important route from the Gulf of Mexico to San Antonio de Béxar. The presidio served as the customs house for Copano (El Cópano)\, established on Aransas Bay about the same time as San Antonio\, served as the principal port of entry. These three points were the key to control of South Texas. La Bahía had immense strategic importance\, since it guarded the supply line from the coast to the principal city. This new municipality owed its importance to the port of Copano\, forty miles distant\, which had begun to compete with Matamoros for the lucrative Mexican interior trade\, for which the new town of Goliad supplied expert smugglers\, as well as oxcarts and drivers who provided transportation between markets and port. \nAbout the Texas Association of Buckskinners\nTexas Association of Buckskinners is a friendly group that encourages period correct equipment and skills\, while helping new pilgrims get more involved in the hobby. The Texas Association of Buckskinners (TAB) began in the late 1970s when three friends who were interested in survivalism decided to put together a group to focus on survival skills based on the Mountain Men of the Western Fur Trade. After several decades\, it is one of the oldest buckskinning groups in Texas and is still going strong\, with events held the last weekend of January (Deep Winter)\, the third weekend in April (Spring) and the last weekend in October (Fall). After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago.
