Over 300 Revolutionary War reenactors from across the country will muster for the Battle of Guilford Courthouse Reenactment and the scheduled events take place from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM each day. Other events related to the commenoration of the battle will be held at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park and the Colonial Heritage Center. \n\nBattle of Guilford Courthouse Reenactment\nThe Battle of Guilford Courthouse Reenactment is held partly on the Greensboro City Park\, which is next to Guilford Courthouse Military Park. — at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. At 10:00 AM on Saturday\, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park will honor those who fought on these grounds in a ceremony at the Nathanael Greene Monument. From the opening cannon fusillades to the last solitary musket shot\, there is a whirl of intense activity as the American and British troops fire\, advance\, attach bayonets\, charge\, retreat\, reload and fire again amid the swirling smoke and acrid odor of gunpowder.\nLike any great story\, even if you know the ending\, it is still captivating to see the action that brings you to the climax. But this event recreates a story of real life and death. Major General Nathanael Greene\, defending the ground at Guilford Courthouse with an army of almost 4\,500 American militia and Continentals\, was tactically defeated by a smaller British army of about 1\,900 veteran regulars and German allies commanded by Lord Charles Cornwallis. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Followed by Memorial Service that starts in chapel\, then a pocession to the Fannin Monument for the conclusion of the memorial service. \nAbout the Goliad Massacre\nAround 6:00 a.m. on Palm Sunday\, March 27\, 1836\, after being held captive for one week\, Colonel Fannin’s men were told to gather up their things. They thought that they were going to the Port of Copano and then on to New Orleans. They were happy and singing. They knew that Colonel Fannin had returned from the Port of Copano the previous day. What they didn’t know was that at 7:00 p.m. the pervious evening\, Colonel Portilla had received word directly from General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to execute the men. The mission of Fort Washita was to maintain peace for the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations within their new lands\, pursuant to treaty obligations. There were many outside threats to the new home of the Chickasaw people\, including attacks by Republic of Texas militia\, interference by unscrupulous intruders\, constant raids by Plains tribes\, the presence of traders and trappers\, and unsettled scores with some of the Plains tribes due to disputes concerning hunting grounds in the Homeland. Fort Washita operated as a United States military post until the start of the Civil War in 1861. It was then occupied by Confederate forces through 1865. Watch as minutemen from throughout New England convene on the Town Common and march with fife and drum down The Great Road to Wilson Park to watch the official Pole Capping tradition. A minuteman will proclaim freedom by shinnying up a 25-foot pole and placing a red cap atop it\, and British soldier will arrive to disrupt the festivities. The Bedford Liberty Pole Capping Parade and Ceremony is one of the opening event for all of the minuteman companies of the region; it is a chance for Revolutionary War reenactors to get in uniform and shake off the cobwebs for the winter. \n\nBedford Liberty Pole Capping Parade and Ceremony\nAnnually\,two Saturdays before Patriots’ Day\, the Bedford Minuteman Company and Minuteman Companies from the area converge on Willson Park in Bedford to commemorate the spirit and courage of the patriots who sparked the American Revolution. \nBedford Pole Capping Revived in 1965\nThe modern tradition of pole capping in Bedford began in 1965 following the formation of the modern-day Bedford Minuteman Company the previous year. The history of pole capping dates back to Roman times but was most prevalent during colonial times. The most notable pole capping took place in Boston in 1765 and was a tree\, not a pole\, located at juncture of Washington and Essex Streets. The “Liberty Tree” was a symbol of the Sons of Liberty\, a revolutionary organization. When a red flag was raised at the top of the tree\, it was a sign to for the group to organize. Liberty Poles sprang up in communities around the colonies\, including Bedford. Today\, the annual Bedford Liberty Pole Capping Parade and Ceremony takes place as a celebration of Bedford’s resolve and patriotic spirit during the American Revolution. \nBedford Liberty Pole Capping Mini-Gallery\n[/fusion_gallery]\n \nThe Bedford Liberty Pole Capping Parade and Ceremony features a march\, displays of musketry\, and music of the period performed by the men and women of the many Minuteman Companies in attendance. But the main event – which draws not only spectators\, but also the soldiers of His Majesty’s 10th Regiment of Foot\, intent on stopping the defiant rabble-rousing – is the raising of a tall wooden pole\, which is climbed by a Bedford Minuteman and affixed with a red knitted cap. \nThe “Pole Capping” reenacts the practice in Colonial America of dissatisfaction with varied rulings and conduct of the English government. This defiance to the British Crown showed the spirit of liberty exemplified by Bedfordians and other colonials in the early phases of the War for Independence. \nThe Town of Bedford displayed equally the spirit and courage of their compatriots with\, among other acts of courage\, the erection of their own Liberty Poles. Meriams Corner Exercise is held on the grounds of the Meriam House\, with a short parade starting at 1:00 pm from Ripley School and concluding with ceremonies at Meriam’s Corner. \n\nMeriams Corner Exercise\nThis annual commemoration marks the assembly and actions of militia and minuteman units that arrived at Meriams Corner during the British retreat from Concord\, Aril 19\, 1775. After the Regulars’ withdrawal from the North Bridge where they had engaged with more than 400 Minutemen\, they began a retreat back to Boston. By the time the Regulars arrived at this spot at half past noon\, there were reported to be about 1\,100 Minutemen in the area from more than a dozen towns. A challenge by the Regulars started a classic guerilla action\, which continued for many hours as the outnumbered British retreated towards Boston. At least two British privates were killed and several others wounded here during that initial exchange. By the time the day was over\, 49 Colonials and 73 British troops were killed\, plus 173 wounded and missing. \nThe actions commerated here at the Meriams Corner Exercise began a war that would not end until Yorktown\, more than 6 long years later. To rid himself of this interference\, Cornwallis organized a surprise attack on Bound Brook with the help of Hessian Johann Ewald\, captain of the elite Lieb Jaeger Korps. \nAt this time\, American Major General Benjamin Lincoln was staying in the home of Phillip Van Horne on the Old York Road\, now Main Street in Bridgewater\, across the street from TD Bank Ballpark and the Bridgewater New Jersey Transit Train Station. \nVan Horne is said to have been friendly to both sides during the Revolution\, and that Lincoln narrowly escaped out the back door as the British were knocking on the front door. \nLincoln was able to rally his 500 troops to retreat. A band of Continental soldiers fought the British at the Queen’s Bridge and the Stone Arch Bridge that spanned the Raritan River and the Green Brook. Most of the Americans were able to escape to fight another day\, though 60 troops were killed or captured. \nOne of the key locations for the Battle of Bound Brook reenactment is South Bound Brook’s Abraham Staats House\, which served as the headquarters of Baron von Steuben\, the German officer who came to Valley Forge and helped instill discipline and martial skills in the American troops during that bitterly cold encampment in Pennsylvania. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Russell and nine of the colonial dead were buried in the nearby Old Burying Ground\, where an obelisk was erected to their memory in 1818. Following the ringing of the bell in the Old Belfry\, members of the Lexington Training Band (now known as the Minutemen) gather on Lexington Green to await the column of British Regulars as they march into the town center. A shot rings out\, the skirmish follows\, and the British column marches on towards Concord leaving dead and wounded behind. \n\nBattle on Lexington Green Reenactment\nTo commemorate the anniversary of the first day of the American War for Independence\, the Lexington Minute Men\, and local British Revolutionary War reenactors\, depict the skirmish that took place on Lexington Green\, early on the morning of April 19\, 1775. Witness the tensions mount\, as the local militia company from Lexington confronts the King’s Regulars\, and the ensuing skirmish that follows. The ‘Shot heard ’round the world.’ The Battle on Lexington Green Reenactment is on the officially observed Patriot’s Day\, the third Monday of April\, starting at 5:45 am on the Lexington Green. \nArrive early for the best viewing spot.The Battle on Lexington Green Reenactment offers a great opportunity to witness our common heritage as Americans. Spectators begin to arrive at Lexington Green as early as 3:00 in the morning in order to get a prime spot for the events that begin with the alarm bell sounding in the Old Belfry at 5:30 am. Each year\, on the Monday of Patriots’ Day weekend\, the Acton Minutemen lead the Isaac Davis Trail March\, recreating the famous march to Concord over the remnants of the original trail that Isaac Davis and his men traveled on that fateful day\, referred to by stone markers labeled “Line of March\, April 19\, 1775”. \n\nIsaac Davis Trail March\nThe Isaac Davis Trail March starts at the Isaac Davis Homestead in Acton at 5:50 am\, where there will be a short ceremony of remembrance. From there\, the march goes to Acton Center\, arriving about 6:20 am at the monument where Isaac Davis\, Abner Hosmer\, and James Hayward are buried\, and have another short remembrance ceremony. From there\, the march proceeds to Concord over the original route (as closely as possible)\, arriving at the Old North Bridge about 9:00 am. At the bridge\, the Acton Minutemen will take part in a battle reenactment of the Old North Bridge Battle that took place there\, along with the 10th and 4th Regiment of Foot. The trail was significant in 1775 when it was used by Captain Isaac Davis and the Acton Minutemen to march on Concord during the battles of Lexington and Concord. The trail was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. \nThe Isaac Davis Trail March begins at Isaac Davis’ house (which still stands) in Acton\, and ends at western end of the North Bridge in the Minuteman National Historical Park in Concord. Most of the route is now paved roads\, where in some cases the alignment no longer matches the exact route. Despite this\, the trail route evokes the time of the march\, with its roadways lined with stone walls\, and houses generally set back from the street. \nHistory of the Isaac Davis Trail March\nIn the early dawn hours of April 19th\, 1775\, an alarm rider galloped his way throughout the town of Acton\, warning of the British advance out of Boston. The objective of the march was Concord\, where the British General\, Thomas Gage\, had heard there were stores of weapons\, ammunition\, and supplies for a protracted military campaign. As such\, when the alarm came to Captain Isaac Davis\, the leader of the Acton Minute Company\, he sounded the alarm shots to rally his men to come to his house and prepare to head off for Concord\, a journey of about 7 miles. \nDavis had said that when 30 men had arrived at his house\, he would depart for Concord. As his men arrived\, Isaac’s wife Hannah\, who had been taking care of their four sick children\, made the men breakfast and helped them to powder their wigs. Then they formed up in two long columns and headed out. They had only marched a few paces\, when Davis halted them\, walked back to Hannah as if to say something profound to her\, and said only “Take good care of the children”. According to Kiowa Gourd Dance coordinator JJ Ahboah\, “in the time when humans could still communicate with animals\, a Kiowa man was separated from his tribe. Lost\, hungry\, and dehydrated\, he began to hear singing. Following the singing\, he came upon a Red Wolf standing upright. This Red Wolf shared songs and dances with the Kiowa man from sunrise to sunset. When the Kiowa man returned to his tribe\, he shared all of the songs and dances with them.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThis dance began as a warriors dance as well as to promote well-being within the tribe.
