Scaife\, a noted historian and author of Campaign for Atlanta. Both Saturday and Sunday’s battles will be held on the same field but with a different scenario – and maybe a surprise or two. Since 1999\, the Battle of Reseca Reenactment has become famous for its aggressive battles and surprise tacticals. Extensive recreations of breastworks and Van den Corput’s redoubt also await your visit. \nReenactors\nBoth Federal and Confederate camps are located in reenactor-friendly sites within easy reach of the sutlers\, vendors\, and reenactor parking. Both encampments will be located close to the respective 1864 lines of battle. Firewood\, bedding straw\, and horse hay will be provided. For campaign-style reenactors\, camping will be permitted in or near the breastworks\, but all amenities will have to be secured from the main static camp areas. On Sunday morning\, a non-denominational church service will be conducted on-site at the Social Fly for all reenactors. \nVisitors\nVarious civilian activities will be conducted during the Battle of Reseca Reenactment. Period sutlers\, authentic civilian and refugee camps\, and modern concessions will be available. On Saturday morning\, all reenactors are encouraged to attend the Memorial Service at the Resaca Confederate Cemetery located at the south end of the farm. The cemetery is the final resting place of 450 soldiers and is one of the first two such Confederate Cemeteries established in our nation. Later Saturday evening\, a period social and dance will be held for all reenactors\, with period music. \n \nSchool Tours\nDuring Friday morning prior to the Battle of Reseca Reenactment\, free school tours will be provided for our area youth. This educational service is for all of our area public and private schools\, home schools\, church youth groups\, and scout troops who would enjoy learning more about the American Civil War. Learn More \nShuttle Transportation\nThe Gordon County Antique Tractor Club will provide free transportation from the spectator parking area to the battle site each day. They will also be available throughout the event to assist stranded motorists. \nOther Reseca Civil War Sites\nWhile in the area\, be sure to visit the new Resaca Battlefield Historic Site that is open now on weekends. This important battlefield is located just off of I-75 at Exit 320 just miles from the reenactment site. The new battlefield park features hiking trails and interpretive markers. A new visitor center will also be opening soon. \nAlso while in the area\, be sure to visit the Fort Wayne Civil War Historic Site just yards from downtown Resaca. This historic fort was part of the defensive earthworks guarding the river and town of Resaca during the 1864 battle. After the battle\, it was occupied by Federal troops. \nIMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS \n\nThe main reenactor parking has been moved to a new location for your convenience and for a much shorter walk to camp. A trail head at the back of this area leads to the CS Campaign camp. A new foot bridge over the creek connects the Campaigner area and the static CS Camp\, allowing easier access to the Sutlers.\nDue to liability issues\, the Battle of Reseca Reenactment Event Staff will not allow reenactors OR the public the personal use of any type of recreational four-wheelers\, off road motorcycles\, golf carts or similar type vehicles to operate on site. At the rendezvous\, the men would renew old friendships and engage in various competitions to test their skills of every kind and character. There are black powder clubs in every state of the United States\, in Canada and even in Europe. There are several rendezvous held annually in our region\, including Bemidji\, Perham\, Detroit Lakes\, and Gary\, South Dakota. \nToday’s Rendezvous\nAt each rendezvous\, a “living history” or period encampment is set up and participants dress in period clothing and use period equipment. It pitted two groups of North Carolinians against each other. There were approximately 2\,000 backcountry farmers called Regulators and around 1\,000 militia troops (citizen soldiers) under the command of Royal Governor William Tryon involved in the two-hour battle. Having officers\, a battle plan\, and more weaponry (which included eight cannon)\, the royal governor and his men easily defeated the ill-prepared Regulators. Governor Tryon reported that nine of his men were killed and sixty-one wounded in the military engagement. Although undetermined\, the Regulator casualties would end up being much greater. It is possible that as many as 100 Regulators may have been killed. The Regulators sought a better regulation of these government officials and more control of their own affairs. Geographical\, social\, and economic factors all had effects on the Regulator movement. \nAlthough the Battle of Alamance was not the first official battle of the American Revolution\, it did provide some valuable insight for revolutionaries as discontent with British rule continued to increase. For the approximately 6\,000 Regulators who took the oath of allegiance to the Crown\, many of them remained loyal to England during the War for Independence. Some of the militia serving under Governor Tryon\, who gained valuable military experience at the battle\, would end up fighting against the British. The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. \nThe Fort Loudoun State Historic Park features a visitor center/museum\, reconstructed Fort Loudoun\, and stabilized ruins of Tellico Blockhouse (1794-1807). Fort Loudoun was constructed by the British Colony of South Carolina to ally the Overhill Cherokee Nation in the fight against the French and to guarantee that trade would continue between the Cherokee and South Carolina. \nBut relations between South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation broke down and the Cherokee captured Fort Loudoun and its garrison. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. The Lancaster Restoration Rendezvous is held every Memorial Day Weekend (Thursday through Monday) and kicks off the summer rendezvous season for many fur trade period reenactors. \n\nLancaster Restoration Memorial Day Rendezvous\nBeing the spring rendezvous\, the rendezvous camp area of the South Platte Valley Historic Park is greening up. Big leafy cottonwood trees provide shade and the fresh grassy areas provide a comfortable place to set up camp. Nearby\, snowmelt is running down the Platte River. Non re-enactor visitors are welcome during the day\, but at the end of the day only campers in pre-1840 clothing are allowed in the rendezvous area.
