After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. Peek into the lives of those who would have lived or traded along the waterways of the Midwest more than 250 years ago when the marshes were a source of valuable furs desired by merchant traders to take back to Europe. \nThe Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park welcomes visitors into encampments of French Canadian voyageurs\, French and British militia\, civilians and settlers\, and Native Americans. Artisans will demonstrate some traditional crafts of those times. The nearly 100 costumed reenactors adhere to details of the time period in their costumes and camps\, according to Robertson\, and share that sense of history with visitors to the event. \nThe Voyageur Rendezvous at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park is a family friendly event with lots of fun and interactive activities for the kids. Visit the Children’s Trading Post to pick up a scavenger hunt list. This list is not items to collect\, but rather items to look for at the event. When voyageurs plied the area waters this was the wilderness. The rivers then were like the highways today\, and were very important to the history and the development and the economic growth in the area. \nHistorically\, the voyageurs landed and exchanged gifts with the natives first\, before any trading. They might spend a whole day exchanging gifts\, generally with the men\, after which most of the trading would be done with the women. The exciting Memorial Day Weekend Powwow competition starts Friday night and goes through Saturday. Men and women\, boys and girls will compete for thousands of dollars in prize money in contests that range from traditional styles to fast moving Fancy Dance for the men and Fancy Shawl for the women. \n\nSouthern Ute Bear Dance Powwow\nThe Southern Ute Powwow is a gatherings where both Native and non-Native people gather to meet\, dance\, sing and honor Native American culture. It is a time for Southern Ute Tribal members\, and members of other Tribes throughout the country\, to get together and showcase their many talents. \n\nTwo Separate Events\nDon’t confuse this Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds with the four day Southern Ute Bear Dance that happens at the same time about three miles away at the Bear Dance Grounds. The traditional Bear Dance\, once held in March\, welcomes spring and celebrates connections to the Earth\, is held on the Memorial Day Weekend at the same time as the “powwow”. Hosted by the Forest Hills Black Powder Brigade\, the Desert Rose Memorial Day Rendezvous is open to the public and will feature numerous activities for participation and observation. Included in these activities are shooting trails for primitive black powder rifles\, pistols and squirrel gun. \nBetween 1823 and 1840 rendezvous were places where trappers would come down out of the mountains to meet with the fur trade company supply wagon and other trappers and trade the pelts and hides they had gathered throughout the year for supplies to make it through the next trapping season. \nBlack powder shooting contests at the Desert Rose Memorial Day Rendezvous include both “target” and “trail” events. The difference between a trail walk and a typical target shoot is that shooters will walk down a trail and shoot in different situations with a variety of targets. Shooters will also get an extra point if they are in primitive clothing but it is not required. This is also true with the tomahawk and knife trail\, where participants will have to display and ability to stick a knife or tomahawk into stumps from different distances. \n \nAlso included in the black powder shooting contests is a couples shoot\, the tomahawk and knife throwing trail\, children’s games and a frying pan toss. The traditional Southern Ute Bear Dance\, once held in March\, welcomes spring and celebrates connections to the Earth each Memorial Day Weekend. The Annual Ute Bear Dance is a social dance everyone enjoys. Origin of the Bear Dance can be traced back to the fifteenth century when the Spanish first came upon the Ute’s in the spring time. When the first thunder in the spring was heard\, it was time for the Bear Dance. \n\nSouthern Ute Bear Dance\nTwo Separate Events\nDon’t confuse this traditional four day Southern Ute Bear Dance at the Bear Dance Grounds with two day Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds that happens at the same time about three miles away. The traditional Bear Dance is held on the Memorial Day Weekend at the same time as the “powwow”. Many dancers and visitors will go back and forth between these two events\, depending on the schedule. \nThe Bear Dance opens at 10 a.m.\, with blessing of the corral at 10:30 and a kick­off lunch at noon. Bear dancing on Saturday and Sunday starts at 10 a.m. and continues through the evening. On Monday the dancing starts at 10a.m. and ends at sunset. All the various Ute bands would come together and prepare for the dances\, which were held throughout Ute territories. For the Southern Utes\, the hosting date has been changed to the Memorial Day weekend to cater to the youth who would be out of school for the summer. \n \nThe Bear Dance is the oldest and most historic of the Southern Ute dances. Legend has it that two brothers were hunting when one of them noticed a bear doing a dance while scratching a tree. The bear taught the hunter the dance\, along with songs\, to take back to his people. The songs showed respect to the bear spirit\, and respect to the bear spirit makes one strong. \nThe Bear Dance is still celebrated today with a dance corral\, drums and singing\, festive costumes and good food. The women wear colorful broom skirts and shawls\, many of which are homemade especially for the dance. It’s women’s choice\, so the women ask the men to dance by flicking their shawls toward the men they wish to dance with. It’s a no risk proposition\, since it’s against the rules for a man in the dance corral to refuse an invitation. \nAnother tradition is to wear plumes during the dance. The plumes represent troubles or hardships endured over the last year. The plumes are left at the entrance of the dance corral when the dance ends to signify leaving old troubles behind and starting life anew. \nThe last day of Bear Dance features a feast for all in attendance.
