Joseph Sills Jr. Book Award by the Custer Battlefield Historical and Museum Association. Rod’s presentation will be: “Nez Perce Warrior Art”. \nBill Holm\, Professor Emeritus of Art History\, and Curator Emeritus of Northwest Coast Indian Art at the Burke Museum\, is recognized internationally as one of the most knowledgeable experts in the field of Northwest Coast Native art history. His groundbreaking book\, Northwest Coast Indian Art: An Analysis of Form\, was originally published in 1965 and is credited with having drawn numerous artists into their own practice of Northwest Coast art. Bill’s presentation will be: “My Life as an Ickpoo” \nSteven L. Grafe\, PhD\, is curator of art at Maryhill Museum of Art in Goldendale\, WA. Prior to joining the staff at Maryhill\, he was curator of American Indian art at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City\, OK. He is the author of Peoples of the Plateau: The Indian Photographs of Lee Moorhouse\, 1898-1915 and Lanterns on the Prairie: The Blackfeet Photographs of Walter McClintock. Steve’s presentation will be: “Plateau Basketry”. \nKen Weidner\, a farmer and rancher from Copeland\, KS\, has taken a lifelong interest in Plains Indian culture from simply reading to learning how to tan hides\, make bead work\, silver work\, construct bows and arrows\, paint rawhide parfleche and many other craft forms. His specialty is making Indian saddles and horse tack. (Yes\, although Indians did ride bareback\, they also made and used saddles) Learning to actually make items helps him learn how Plains Indians lived their lives. Ken has served on the board of the Fort Larned Old Guard and has had several of his saddles and German silver bridles featured in major movies such as “The Homesman” and the forthcoming AMC series “The Son”. His museum quality replica Plains Indian saddles are on display at major U.S. museums and national historic sites. Ken’s presentation will be: “Plateau Saddles and Horse Regalia”. \nScott M. Thompson\, of Spokane\, WA is a retired art teacher\, independent researcher\, and author of I Will Tell of My War Story: A Pictorial Account of the Nez Perce War. Scott’s Presentation will be “Incised Rawhide Techniques” \nMark Miller\, a resident of Montana’s Flathead Valley\, has been involved in creating authentic replicas of old time traditional native style art for over 40 years. He worked for several years as a teacher at a vocational school in Grouard\, Alberta\, Canada amidst three large Cree reserves teaching fine arts courses as well as beading\, quill work\, hide tanning\, etc. He is a prolific artist whose work is much sought after by collectors\, major Western artists\, and costume designers. Mark has an expansive background in artifact restoration working on artifacts in major museums and private collections. Presentation will be: “A Brief History of Photography and the Plateau Indians” \nRichard Kuh\, who retired after a 30+ year career in emergency medical services\, currently serves as deputy coroner of Stevens County\, WA and resides in Colville\, Washington. He has been immersed in native culture for over fifty years and is an annual participant in a sun dance on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. He has written articles on Plains Indian material culture and currently focuses much of his study on historic and modern Plateau material culture and tradition. Rick’s presentation will be: “Eagles Feathers and the Law” \nJesse Richardson\, who resides in Mineral Wells\, Texas\, is an accomplished brain tanner\, craftsman\, and bead worker who holds himself to a very high standard of authenticity in his work. He uses antique seed beads and sinew sews his creations to authentically replicate Southern Plains style regalia and items for his personal enjoyment. He has had a life long fascination with Plains culture and has taken his interests far beyond reading about the “buffalo days” of the past to actually getting a working knowledge of how things were made using a very hands on approach. The Tecumseh Rendezvous takes place in conjunction with the Tecumseh Oklahoma Frontier Days Celebration hosted by the Indian Territory Rendezvous Club and is held on the third weekend in September. \nHistorical Background\nThe Rendezvous celebrates the early 1800s when this part of the western frontier was first explored by the young nation of the United States of America. We had recently acquired this land from the French. Many historic people traveled through this frontier including Randolph Marcy and James Wilkerson (a contingent of Pike’s expedition in 1806). \nThis area was made famous by the noted American writer\, Washington Irving\, during his journey through the Cross Timbers\, an area known for its dense forest which Irving characterized as a “forest of cast iron.” Irving was accompanied by Henry Ellsworth\, the new Commissioner of Indian Lands\, and two notable Europeans\, Latrobe and Count DePourtalés. During this time\, a rendezvous would occur\, an event where trappers and traders would gather along with Indian tribes and merchants to exchange goods for skins and pelts. Mountain men would look forward to these rendezvous as an annual opportunity to do business\, restock\, carouse and generally enjoy the company of their peers. Although formal rendezvous did not occur in Oklahoma\, these types of impromptu social gatherings certainly occurred whenever the eastern travelers met with representatives of Indian tribes in this rich and fertile hunting ground. None were more important than the Buncombe Turnpike built in 1828 that ran through the mountains at Warm Springs\, North Carolina. This area would see many conflicts throughout the war\, with both sides trying to gain control of the area. \nThe Civil War in Madison County\, North Carolina\nBecause Madison County was a “border county” in a “border state” during the Civil War\, there are many examples of communities as well as families divided in their allegiances. There were no major battles in Madison County although both armies moved through the area and Madison County furnished troops for both sides. A few skirmishes were fought within the County: one at Cuffey Field on Spring Creek and a second on the hotel grounds at Warm Springs (the former name of the town of Hot Springs). The reenactment takes place on the weekend in January that is closest to the original date of January 15-16\, 1781. \nOn the March we relive Morgan’s activities during the two-day race with the enemy while also planning how to use his soldiers to win a great victory at a place called the Cowpens. Hikers and bikers (non-motorized) may go the entire route or choose only the segments that interest them. Horseback riders are welcome to participate as horses add to the excitement along the route. Reenactors and historians will describe what was happening at that time over 200 years ago as the militia units were mustering and moving to help Morgan’s Continentals defend their homeland against British invaders. \nTwo Day March: The first leg of the march is about 13 and one half miles. The Sunday portion\, ending at the Cowpens National Battlefield\, is about 11 and one half miles. \nRegistration is required: Marchers should pre-register with the Town of Pacolet (864-474-950) or email eharris@townofpacolet.com. Marchers will be asked to sign a waiver of liability for the sponsors and landowners located along the route. There is no charge for marcher but donations will be accepted. \nTransportation: It is not necessary that you walk the entire distance. Morgan and his army had arrived at Grindal Shoals on Christmas Day\, about three weeks before. On the night of Jan. 14\, Morgan had received word that Tarleton and his army were coming after him. The next morning\, on Jan. 15\, Morgan had started his army on the march in an effort to get away from the British. His army marched up the Green River Road. Today\, some of that road is known as the Asbury Highway or Hwy 211. His army entered the Asbury Highway portion just beside where Wagstop Plantation is located today. After a few miles\, they turned right on the part of the Green River Road that is known today as “Goucher School Road”. This is just before where Knuckles Chapel Church is located today. \nJust one day behind them\, the British army marched up the Quarter Round Road until they too came into the Green River Road at an intersection near to the present location of Knuckles Chapel. Now\, both armies were on the same road to their deadly meeting at Cowpens. \nEnding Location Cowpens National Battlefield 338 New Pleasant Road Gaffney\, SC 29341 (864) 461-2828 \nThe Battle of Cowpens was a very important American victory against overwhelming odds. The Battleground is about 9 miles northwest of Cowpens. The American General Daniel Morgan did all he could do to get away from the British army under Tarleton. As we have seen at Easterwood and Grindal Shoals\, the British army was just moving too fast for Morgan to get away. Morgan realized that Tarleton was going to catch him. He decided to stop and fight him at a place of his own choosing rather than to let Tarleton catch his army as it was crossing the Broad River only five miles away. \nMorgan planned a brilliant strategy for the battle that is still studied in Military Schools to this day. The battle was fought in the early morning on January 17\, 1781 and barely lasted an hour. It was a complete Patriot victory over the British army. The Patriot forces under General Morgan crushed and destroyed the British army.
