At the Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, you will learn about the second Seminole Indian War from soldiers in period dress\, camped in front of the fort; this free event includes musket firing demonstrations and programs in the fort at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both days. \nAdmission Free – Parking Free – Public Welcome \nPark Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. \nAs the Second Seminole War escalated across Florida in 1835\, U.S. Army orders were issued to build a string of over 200 forts to garrison men and supplies in an effort to supress the Seminole Indians. As the army arrived in central Florida on Christmas Day\, 1837\, the stockade was aptly christened Fort Christmas. Fort Christmas is a typical Seminole Indian War fort\, made of tall pine pickets. The fort is 80 linear square feet\, with two block houses that are 20 square feet each\, with a storehouse and a powder magazine within the walls of the fort. The replica of Fort Christmas serves as a museum with exhibits focusing on the Second Seminole War and pioneer life in Florida. Today\, the replica fort and museum is the centerpiece of Fort Christmas Historical Park. \n \nIn addition to the park’s full scale replica of the 19th century fort\, seven restored cracker era buildings are open for tours. These pioneer homes and a school building are furnished with period furniture\, appliances\, kitchen items and hand tools. A few of these Florida cracker homes included the Beehead Ranch house\, the Taylor Creek Yates home\, and the 1916 Union Schoolhouse. This family friendly event is extremely popular\, one of Central Florida’s most interesting traditional gatherings. The Cracker houses on display belonged to families with familiar names from Florida’s pioneer days\, such as Simmons\, Wheeler\, Bass\, and Yates. \nLocation\nFort Christmas Historical Park\n1300 North Fort Christmas Road\nChristmas\, FL 32709\n407-254-9312 \nFor More Information: Call 407-254-9312 or Email Trudy.Trask@ocfl.net \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Christmas Cracker Christmas on the weekend before Easter at the Fort Christmas Historical Park in Christmas\, Florida. \nTags:Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Militia Reenactment\, Fort Christmas Historical Park\, Fort Christmas \nView other History Festivals & Events

During Fort Dobbs’ largest event of the year\, join the soldiers\, settlers\, and American Indians who inhabited North Carolina’s colonial frontier and learn about their lives and struggles through encampments\, trades demonstrations\, and tactical demonstrations. The centuries-old animosities between England and France played out in the New World in the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Fort Dobbs State Historic Site will recapture the struggles of that time during the “War for Empire” program\, in the largest French and Indian War re-enactment in the Carolinas that also will honor a Cherokee leader. \n\nFort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment\nTensions spiraled into war with shifting allegiances among the British\, French and dozens of American Indian tribes\, principally the Cherokee in western North Carolina. “Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment” will examine the different people living on the North Carolina frontier in the 1750s and offer a glimpse of frontier life. \nDuring our Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment\, trade demonstrations will include stone carving\, spinning\, cooking and woodworking; skills necessary for day-to-day survival. Visitors will meet soldiers\, American Indians and civilians from the 18th century as the French and Indian War history is illustrated with re-enactors. Encampments\, trades and crafts\, musical performances and weapons demonstrations will be entertaining and enlightening as this history comes to life. Battle re-enactments at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday will be a program highlight. Vendors will offer reproduction period merchandise. \nThe educational program at this state historic site gives life to North Carolina’s past experiences and traditions and demonstrates the value of living history to students and adults. \nWar of Empire Features: \n\n\n\nThe Battle of Fort Dobbs each day at 1:30 p.m.\nCostumed interpreters portraying provincial soldiers and Cherokee warriors\n1st person presentation of historical figures\nOngoing demonstrations of 18th century military\, civilian and American-Indian camp life\nScholarly lectures each day at 3 p.m.\n18th century market fair\nMusic\, period entertainment\, 18th century food and much more!\n\n\n\nFor more information\, please call (704) 873-5882 or visit www.fortdobbs\,org. Fort Dobbs is the only state historic site dedicated to the period of the French and Indian War (1754-1763)\, also known as the Seven Years’ War. It is North Carolina’s only link to a war for empire that crossed five continents and lasted nearly 10 years. Fort Dobbs is within the Division of State Historic Sites administered by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. \nAdmission: $4.00; children under age 5 are free. \nHours:\nSaturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m.\nSunday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nReenactors: Anyone wishing to participate in the Fort Dobbs War for Empire Reenactment needs to register. Reenactor Registration Form \nLocation:\nFort Dobbs State Historic Site\n438 Fort Dobbs Road\nStatesville\, NC 28625 \nDirections: From Interstate 40\, take either US 21 North (exit 151) or NC 115 North (exit. 150). From US 21\, turn left onto Fort Dobbs Road. From NC 115\, veer right onto S. Chipley Ford Road\, then turn right onto Fort Dobbs Road. \nFor More Information: Call 704-873-5882; Email: info@fortdobbs.org \n \nHistory of Fort Dobbs\nFort Dobbs was the only permanent frontier provincial fort in the colony of North Carolina. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago. We hope\, with your support\, to have Fort Dobbs open as a living history exhibit on a grand scale by early 2019![/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment in April at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville\, North Carolina. \nTags: Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment\, Fort Dobbs War for Empire\, War for Empire\, French & Indian War Reenactment \nView other War of 1812 Encampments & Reenactments

During the Gourd Dancing only the Gourd Dancers\, their relatives\, and relatives of Veterans should be in the Pow Wow arena. \nGrand Entry\, Intertribal & Contest Dancing – This is the entry of all the people entering the dance arena or the sacred circle. During the Grand Entry\, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the circle. Following the veterans are other important guests of the Pow Wow – including tribal chiefs\, Princesses\, elders\, and Pow Wow organizers. Next in line are the men dancers. The men are followed by the women dancers. Once everyone is in the arena\, the song ends and a song to honor the flag and the veterans is sung. During Grand Entry and the Veterans honor song it is important to native culture that NO PICTURES\, VIDEOS\, or AUDIO recordings take place. Following the Grand Entry\, intertribal and contest dancing (if the powwow includes contests) will follow. ‘Sets’ of songs (and dancing) will be separated by announcements\, specials\, raffles\, and other powwow related ‘business’. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next UCO Spring Powwow in April in Edmund\, Oklahoma. \n \nTags: UCO Spring Powwow\, UCO Spring Pow Wow\, University of Central Oklahoma Spring Powwow\, University of Central Oklahoma Spring Pow Wow\, Oklahoma Powwow\, Oklahoma Pow Wow \nView Other Oklahoma Pow Wows

Banks and Confederate forces\, led by Major General Richard Taylor. \nThe battle was essentially a continuation of the previous day’s Battle of Mansfield\, fought nearby\, which ended around sunset due to darkness. The night time provided a brief interlude in hostilities. On April 9\, Taylor launched an ambitious assault against the newly reinforced Federals at Pleasant Hill and had the upper hand before General Thomas J. Churchill’s Arkansas division was flanked on its right and repulsed. After the battle\, the Federals remained demoralized and unconfident in their commander; they retreated to Grand Ecore\, and from there to Alexandria. This was the largest battle fought west of the Mississippi River. \nOfficially\, the battle was a Union victory; as the Confederates were successfully driven from the field. However\, because Banks and his army had retreated so soon afterwards\, many argued over who had really won. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Pleasant Hill Reenactment in Pllican\, Louisiana. \nTags: Battle of Pleasant Hill Reenactment\, Battle of Pleasant Hill Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

The traditional powwow is a social event where tribal ties are encouraged and reinforced. Accomplishments and achievements are acknowledged in a community setting with one’s family and friends present to witness and participate in the event. These events are driven by American Indian cultures and are used to pass on traditional values of honor to the young people. \nThe contest powwow is a recent phenomenon that incorporates tradition into the competition of dancing and singing. Champion dancers and singers from throughout the United States and Canada travel to various powwows throughout the nation to compete for top prizes. McClellan’s Union Army of the Potomac landed at Ft. Monroe and Newport News Point and began making their way towards Richmond. By early April\, they had been stopped by General John B. Magruder’s Confederate Army of the Peninsula\, while reinforcements from General Joseph Johnston’s army began arriving from northern Virginia. Both sides settled into a siege along the Warwick River and around Yorktown. \nCome see this historic siege recreated at locations impacted by armies from both sides. This event will take place on Saturday 10-5 pm and Sunday 11-3 pm. \nEndview Plantation:\nThroughout the Civil War\, refugees fled as armies moved through the countryside. These families didn’t know when or if they would be able to return home and if they did\, what they would find. Local families such as the Curtis family of Endview and the Lee family of Lee Hall fled west and wouldn’t return until the war was over three years later. At Endview see living historians portraying civilians fleeing the armies as they move up the Peninsula. Endview Plantation is located at 362 Yorktown Rd. Newport News\, VA 23603. For questions\, call (757) 887-1862. \nLee Hall Mansion:\nServing as the Confederate Headquarters of Gen. John B. Magruder’s Confederate Army of the Peninsula\, Lee Hall would’ve been the epicenter of the Confederate resistance to McClellan’s Union army with staff officers busy keeping the army running. As Gen. Joseph Johnston’s army began to arrive from northern Virginia to reinforce Magruder’s troops\, many regiments passed by Lee Hall or camped on its property before moving on to their places in the Confederate fortifications. One such unit was the 3rd South Carolina Infantry. See living historians portraying Magruder’s staff and the 3rd SC Infantry. Lee Hall Mansion is located at 163 Yorktown Rd. Newport News\, VA 23603. For questions\, call (757) 888-3371. \nNewport News Park:\nAs soldiers from both sides settled into a siege\, the 15th North Carolina Infantry was sent to Dam #1 (one of 5 dams used to make the Warwick River impassable) to build more fortifications and protect the dam from a possible crossing. On April 16th\, the 3rd Vermont Infantry tried to cross the river before being forced back by overwhelming Confederate reinforcements. See living historians portraying members of the 15th NC and 3rd VT infantry at the original site near the Discovery Center. Newport News Park is located at 13560 Jefferson Ave. Newport News\, VA 23603. Follow Constitution Way to the Discovery Center. For questions\, call (757) 886-7777. \nThis event is free with regular admission. \nLocation\nEndview Plantation\n362 Yorktown Road\nNewport News\, VA 23603 \nFor More Information: call (757) 887-1862; email endview@nnva.gov \nParticipant Registration By invitation only: contact tgreene@nnva.gov\nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Endview Plantation Civil War Living History Weekend at the historic Endview Plantation in Newport News\, Virginia. \n \nTags: Endview Plantation Civil War Living History Weekend\, Endview Plantation Civil War Living History\, Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Living History\, Endview Plantation \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events
