Reenactors will take over Caseyville Park to demonstrate the tasks of the frontier days. Talk with reenactors\, visit the kid’s area\, try your hand at tomahawk and knife throwing – or the frying pan toss! Food and reenactor goods available to purchase both days. \nCaseyville was founded as a frontier village in the early 1800s; it was incorporated in 1849 and grew after coal was discovered in the area. Frontier Days will include a number of demonstrations of tasks from the pre-1840s period such as flintknapping\, rug making\, leather working and possibly blacksmithing. The types and number of demonstrations will depend on how many reenactors make their way to Caseyville. \nIn addition to the demonstrations\, there will be pony rides\, vendors and refreshments\, including biscuits and gravy on Sunday. \nParticipants: Camp in a beautiful park with shade and lakes. No camp fee\, no trade fee\, but be prepared to offer a demonstration in lieu of a fee. Wood and water provided. Ice is available on site. Pre-1840 dress required. Food vendors must call. According to historians\, the fort was burned down. The exact location of the original fort has been the subject of great debate since Peoria was founded. A reconstructed fort now commemorates Illinois’ first European-built structure. \nTwice a year in spring and fall\, the not-for-profit Fort Crevecoeur\, Inc. holds Rendezvous Days as a main fundraiser to maintain the fort and surrounding park. French explorer Robert de La Salle (1643-87) helped the Peoria Indians build a fort in 1860 to defend themselves against the Iroquois. LaSalle made a deal with the local tribes to protect them from the Iroquois tribal league. LaSalle fostered good relationships with the tribes—Fort Creve Coeur wasn’t around too long though—this original site quickly became abandoned as Tonti left to fortify Starved Rock. Tonti’s mission to Starved Rock was to only end in failure though. This area would see many conflicts throughout the war\, with both sides trying to gain control of the area. \nThe Civil War in Madison County\, North Carolina\nBecause Madison County was a “border county” in a “border state” during the Civil War\, there are many examples of communities as well as families divided in their allegiances. There were no major battles in Madison County although both armies moved through the area and Madison County furnished troops for both sides. A few skirmishes were fought within the County: one at Cuffey Field on Spring Creek and a second on the hotel grounds at Warm Springs (the former name of the town of Hot Springs). The reenactment takes place on the weekend in January that is closest to the original date of January 15-16\, 1781. \nOn the March we relive Morgan’s activities during the two-day race with the enemy while also planning how to use his soldiers to win a great victory at a place called the Cowpens. Hikers and bikers (non-motorized) may go the entire route or choose only the segments that interest them. Horseback riders are welcome to participate as horses add to the excitement along the route. Reenactors and historians will describe what was happening at that time over 200 years ago as the militia units were mustering and moving to help Morgan’s Continentals defend their homeland against British invaders. \nTwo Day March: The first leg of the march is about 13 and one half miles. The Sunday portion\, ending at the Cowpens National Battlefield\, is about 11 and one half miles. \nRegistration is required: Marchers should pre-register with the Town of Pacolet (864-474-950) or email eharris@townofpacolet.com. Marchers will be asked to sign a waiver of liability for the sponsors and landowners located along the route. Morgan and his army had arrived at Grindal Shoals on Christmas Day\, about three weeks before. On the night of Jan. 14\, Morgan had received word that Tarleton and his army were coming after him. The next morning\, on Jan. 15\, Morgan had started his army on the march in an effort to get away from the British. His army marched up the Green River Road. Today\, some of that road is known as the Asbury Highway or Hwy 211. His army entered the Asbury Highway portion just beside where Wagstop Plantation is located today. After a few miles\, they turned right on the part of the Green River Road that is known today as “Goucher School Road”. This is just before where Knuckles Chapel Church is located today. \nJust one day behind them\, the British army marched up the Quarter Round Road until they too came into the Green River Road at an intersection near to the present location of Knuckles Chapel. The Battleground is about 9 miles northwest of Cowpens. The American General Daniel Morgan did all he could do to get away from the British army under Tarleton. As we have seen at Easterwood and Grindal Shoals\, the British army was just moving too fast for Morgan to get away. Morgan realized that Tarleton was going to catch him. He decided to stop and fight him at a place of his own choosing rather than to let Tarleton catch his army as it was crossing the Broad River only five miles away. \nMorgan planned a brilliant strategy for the battle that is still studied in Military Schools to this day. The battle was fought in the early morning on January 17\, 1781 and barely lasted an hour. It was a complete Patriot victory over the British army. The Patriot forces under General Morgan crushed and destroyed the British army. Cancelled for 2019. Known to the Federal Army as Averasboro\, the Locals called it The Battle of Black River. The event starts with a Friday “School Day”. Saturday and Sunday include battle reenactments with over 200 Union and Confederate reenactors. The Oak Grove Plantation Civil War Reenactment include house tours\, indoor fireplace cooking\, caring for farm animals and making tar pitch. Reenactors will be on hand for afternoon tours of their military camps. Later\, for a fee\, visitors can join the soldiers for an authentic camp dinner. \nThe Oak Grove Plantation Civil War Reenactment Battle of Black River on the Averasboro battlefied will be a weekend of Civil War battle reenactments\, diverse 19th century demonstrations\, exhibits\, live music\, food and wares vendors\, and much more. Take the family out for the day to the Oak Grove Plantation Civil War Reenactment Battle of Black River\, where the home was once used as a Union Army hospital during the Civil War. Oak Grove served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War. In March 1865\, the plantation became a Union hospital during the Battle of\, part of the larger Battle of Averasboro. Cannon and bullets have scarred the building. It is considered one of the oldest houses in Harnett County. \nAbout the Battle of the Black River & Battle of Averasboro\nThe Battle of the Black River was part of the larger Battle of Averasboro. The Battle at Averasboro was intended to slow Gen. William T. Sherman’s army down so the Confederates could organize at Bentonville. The Battle of Averasboro was fought March 16\, 1865\, in Harnett and Cumberland counties\, North Carolina\, as part of the Carolinas Campaign of the American Civil War\, was a prelude to the climactic Battle of Bentonville\, which began three days later. Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman was moving his army north towards Goldsboro in two columns. The right column (Army of the Tennessee) was under the command of Maj. Gen. Oliver O. When reinforcements arrived\, the Union forces counter attacked and drove back two lines of Confederates\, but were stopped by a third line. By this time\, units from Maj. Gen. Jefferson C. Davis’s XIV Corps began to arrive on the field. Outnumbered and in danger of being flanked\, Hardee’s troops withdrew. \nThe Confederates had not held up the Union Army as long as they had hoped. Each side suffered about 700 casualties; however\, these were losses the Federals could afford while the Confederates could not.
