The Oshke Kno Kewéwen Traditional Pow Wow is held each Memorial Day Weekend\, and is named in recognition of the Pokagon Band community eagle staff carried by the Pokagon Band veterans. \n\nOshke Kno Kewéwen Traditional Pow Wow\nOshke-Kno-Kewéwen in the Potawatomi language refers to a new eagle staff\, which is much like a national flag. The Pokagon Band veterans constructed two eagle staffs\, which hold dozens of eagle feathers\, each representing a tribal family. This pow wow honors the staffs and the hundreds of Pokagon veterans and past tribal leaders represented on it. \nThe Grand Entries for the pow wow\, which are the formal start of the dancing and songs\, are at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. One is held during the Memorial Day Weekend at the end of May (AIS Memorial Day Weekend Powwow) and the other during Columbus Day Weekend in October (AIS Homecoming Powwow). George Washington. \n\nBattle of Princeton Reenactment\nAbut the Battle\nThe battle\, though small\, is considered a turning point in the American Revolution. It was the culmination of the 10-day campaign that began with George Washington’s Hail Mary pass – the crossing of the Delaware. Washington had lost 90 percent of his army\, but he managed to convince his men to stick around a few more weeks and at Princeton they saw the first victory over the British on a battlefield. Continue on to see the old “Fort”\, a replica for local militia units during the Black Hawk War of 1832. \nFort Atkinson’s real “fort” was built in 1832 during the Blackhawk War by General Henry Atkinson’s militia near the junction of the Bark and Rock rivers. At the time\, Wisconsin was still part of the Michigan Territory. A stockade replica of the original Fort Koshkonong stands in Rock River Park and is where much of the rendezvous action takes place. \nChildrens’ Pioneer Interactive Area\nThese areas offer hands-on experience (chores and games)\, like children would have experienced on the early American frontier. These children’s chores include carrying water\, sawing wood\, and even building a miniature log cabin. This was a defining moment in the history of our state and nation. The First Siege of Fort Meigs was a pivotal fight that would help turn the tide of war and usher in a series of American victories that would secure the Ohio frontier. General William Henry Harrison wrote that day\, “It is at length reduced to certainty that the enemy are about to carry into effect their threatened attack on this post” and urged his men “To your posts then\, fellow Soldiers\, and remember that the eyes of your Country are upon you!” \n \n\nAt 2 o’clock in the morning the British opened their artillery upon our garrison from their gun-boats… At 8 o’clock they hoisted the red flag at their lower battery and commenced firing with 24-\, 12- and 6-pounders\, and eight inch mortars. Following the battle\, a reenactment of the historic Hanger amputation will take place in Sutler Row on Main Street. \nAbout the actual Battle of Philippi\nThe Battle of Philippi formed part of the Western Virginia Campaign of the American Civil War\, and was fought in and around Philippi\, Virginia (now West Virginia) on June 3\, 1861. On May 28\, 1861\, Col. George Porterfield and his Confederate troops arrived in Philippi\, where they camped or were quartered in town. Neighbors and families were already divided on the question of secession. There were at least 750\, if not upwards of 2\,000 troops. At daylight on June 3\, two columns of Union forces\, with perhaps 3\,000 men\, arrived from Grafton under the command of Col. Ebenezer Dumont and Col. Benjamin Kelley. A Union victory\, it was the first organized land action of the war\, though generally viewed as a skirmish rather than a battle. \nMistaking a pistol shot by a Mrs. Humpreys on the hill above the town as a signal to start the battle\, the Union troops fired on the Confederates with two brass six-pound Napoleon cannons. The Confederates routed to a big rock south of town and departed in good order to Belington and ultimately to Beverly. \nThe Original Blue and Gray Renuion\nOn June 3\, 1911 the first “Home Coming Week” ever held in Barbour County of the “Blue and Gray Soldiers” who participated in the 1861 battle was held. Children can simulate joining the war effort at a recruitment station\, where they will be given wooden rifles and taught how to load them and go through lineup.
