Included in these activities are shooting trails for primitive black powder rifles\, pistols and squirrel gun. \nBetween 1823 and 1840 rendezvous were places where trappers would come down out of the mountains to meet with the fur trade company supply wagon and other trappers and trade the pelts and hides they had gathered throughout the year for supplies to make it through the next trapping season. \nBlack powder shooting contests at the Desert Rose Memorial Day Rendezvous include both “target” and “trail” events. The difference between a trail walk and a typical target shoot is that shooters will walk down a trail and shoot in different situations with a variety of targets. Shooters will also get an extra point if they are in primitive clothing but it is not required. This is also true with the tomahawk and knife trail\, where participants will have to display and ability to stick a knife or tomahawk into stumps from different distances. \n \nAlso included in the black powder shooting contests is a couples shoot\, the tomahawk and knife throwing trail\, children’s games and a frying pan toss. Often times included in the toss are sometimes less-than-willing targets who have to stand in front of their wives and friends as they hurl a frying pan at them. \nAttend the morning shooters meeting for an extra trail point. \nContest Divisions: Men’s\, Women’s\, Young adult (15-18)\, Juniors (11-14)\,\nand peewee (6-10). \nTrail Walk: Patched round ball\, open iron sights only. Extra point for primitive dress\, foot wear optional. \nContest Entry Fees: Family $25\, Single adult $15\, Young adult $10\, Juniors $5\, PeeWee FREE!\nYou may shoot in a second division for $10. \nOther Events: Shotgun $5.00\, Squirrel Trail $1.00\, Archery Trail $1.00\, Long Gong $1.00\, Couples Shoot $1.00\, Frying Pan Toss $1.00 per/toss\, Childrens Games FREE! \nDesert Rose Memorial Day Rendezvous Mini Gallery\n\n\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Desert Rose Rendezvous Schedule of Events”]\nFriday\nRegistration 1:00 pm -6:00 pm\nShooter’s Meeting at registration 1:00 pm\nTrails (Rifle\, Trade Gun\, Pistol\, H&K\, Archery\, & Squirrel) 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm \nSaturday\nRegistration 8:00 am- 4:00 pm\nShooter’s Meeting at registration 8:00 am\nTrails 8:30 am – 4:00 pm\nKids Games (ages 1-10) 2:00 pm – 3:00 PM\nCouples Shoot (meet at registration) 4:30 pm- 5:30 pm\nCouncil Fire \nSunday\nTBA\nShooter’s Meeting at registration 8:00 am\nRegistration 8:00 am – 4:00 pm\nTrails 8:30 am – 4:00 pm\nPeeWee Trail (meet at registration) 10:45 am (all start at this time)\nKids Games (1–10) 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm\nFrying Pan Toss 3:00\nLong Gong (meet at registration) 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm\nShot Gun (meet at registration) \nMonday\, Memorial Day\n5:00 pm\nAwards Ceremony at registration 9:30 am\nPlease check at registration for times\, costs\, any additions\, deletions or changes.\nPlease keep your dog on a leash and under your control at all times. The event starts Friday night and goes through Monday. The traditional Southern Ute Bear Dance\, once held in March\, welcomes spring and celebrates connections to the Earth each Memorial Day Weekend. The Annual Ute Bear Dance is a social dance everyone enjoys. Origin of the Bear Dance can be traced back to the fifteenth century when the Spanish first came upon the Ute’s in the spring time. When the first thunder in the spring was heard\, it was time for the Bear Dance. \n\nSouthern Ute Bear Dance\nTwo Separate Events\nDon’t confuse this traditional four day Southern Ute Bear Dance at the Bear Dance Grounds with two day Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds that happens at the same time about three miles away. The traditional Bear Dance is held on the Memorial Day Weekend at the same time as the “powwow”. Many dancers and visitors will go back and forth between these two events\, depending on the schedule. \nThe Bear Dance opens at 10 a.m.\, with blessing of the corral at 10:30 and a kickoff lunch at noon. Bear dancing on Saturday and Sunday starts at 10 a.m. and continues through the evening. On Monday the dancing starts at 10a.m. and ends at sunset. The Bear Dance feast is Monday noon just south of the Bear Dance corral. \nPlease Observe these Rules \n\nNo short dresses or baggy pants while dancing\nPhotography\, video and audio recording is prohibited except by members of the Ute Tribes.\nThe Pine River is restricted\n\nFor Bear Dance information call 970-563-0100 x 2301. \nAbout the Bear Dance\nThe Bear Dance originally was held around the middle of March\, usually after the first thunder in the spring was heard and when the Bear came out of hibernation. All the various Ute bands would come together and prepare for the dances\, which were held throughout Ute territories. For the Southern Utes\, the hosting date has been changed to the Memorial Day weekend to cater to the youth who would be out of school for the summer. \n \nThe Bear Dance is the oldest and most historic of the Southern Ute dances. Legend has it that two brothers were hunting when one of them noticed a bear doing a dance while scratching a tree. The bear taught the hunter the dance\, along with songs\, to take back to his people. The songs showed respect to the bear spirit\, and respect to the bear spirit makes one strong. \nThe Bear Dance is still celebrated today with a dance corral\, drums and singing\, festive costumes and good food. The women wear colorful broom skirts and shawls\, many of which are homemade especially for the dance. It’s women’s choice\, so the women ask the men to dance by flicking their shawls toward the men they wish to dance with. It’s a no risk proposition\, since it’s against the rules for a man in the dance corral to refuse an invitation. \nAnother tradition is to wear plumes during the dance. The plumes represent troubles or hardships endured over the last year. The plumes are left at the entrance of the dance corral when the dance ends to signify leaving old troubles behind and starting life anew. \nThe last day of Bear Dance features a feast for all in attendance. Traditionally\, a stew is prepared with meat and vegetables mixed in a large\, round pot atop an open fire. \nThis information about the Southern Ute Bear Dance is from articles on the Bear Dance\, by the Southern Ute Drum. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Southern Ute Bear Dance celebration on Memorial Day Weekend at the Bear Dance Grounds in Ignacio\, Colorado. \nTags: Southern Ute Bear Dance\, Colorado Powwow\, Colorado Pow Wow \nView other Colorado Pow Wows

The Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant is a reenactment of the events that took place at Fort Michilimackinac with a story that begins with friendship\, respect and cooperative trading between the Native Americans\, French and the Voyageurs and Traders. Following the French and Indian War\, the Fort comes under the rule of the British\, who treat the Native Americans as servants. The great Ottawa Chief Pontiac calls for a war council and devises a blueprint to decimate the British\, which includes the playing of an innocent baggataway game. Will Chief Pontiac’s plan succeed? You have to come to the Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant and see! \n\nFort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant\nThe Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant cast consists of community volunteers who portray British and French Soldiers\, Colonial Women and Men\, Native Americans and Voyageurs. The Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant is the longest running free Memorial Day historical program in U.S. More than 400 cast members take part in the three-day Memorial Day weekend pageant that brings to life the 1763 Fort Michilimackinac battle between the French\, British\, and Native Americans. \nThe Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant cast members are clad in period costumes and demonstrate the way of life for residents of Northern Michigan in the 1760s. A highlight of the weekend is the Memorial Day Parade through the streets of Mackinaw City that includes more than 100 bands\, acts\, and floats. \nAdmission (to Fort):\nAdults $12.50\nChild (5-12) $7.50\nUnder 5 Free \nFort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant Schedule (subject to change)\nSaturday\n9:00 am\, Fort Michilimackinac opens\, Voyageurs Shoot at the range (Windmill farms) (Sunday if rain)\n1:00 pm\, Grand Parade\n3:00 pm\, 18th Century fashion show\, fort parade grounds\n3:30 pm\, Reenactment at Fort Michilimackinac\n8:30 pm\, Fireside Activities Voyageurs Camp\nDusk\, Fireworks display water front state dock area.\nAfter fireworks\, Camp Activities (Voyageurs Camp) \nFort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant Mini-Gallery\n\n \nSunday\n9:00 am\, Fort opens\n9:30 am\, Voyageurs Knive & Hawk (Voyageurs Camp)\n10:30 am\, Voyageurs children’s game\, high school\n2pm\, 18th Century Mackinac Fashion Show\, fort parade grounds\n2:30 pm\, Reenactment at Fort Michilimackinac\n4:30 pm\,Voyageurs Other Competitions (Voyageurs Camp) \nMonday\n8:30 am – 9:30 am\, Memorial Day Service: Marina Park/Cemetery\n9:00 am\, Fort opens\n2:00 pm\, 18th Century Mackinac Fashion Show\, fort parade grounds\n2:30 pm\, Reenactment at Fort Michilimackinac \nLocation\nFort Michilimackinac\n102 Straits Ave\nMackinaw City\, Michigan 49701\n(231) 436-5563 \nAbout Fort Michilimackinac \nFort Michilimackinac was an 18th-century French\, and later British\, fort and trading post at the Straits of Mackinac; it was built on the northern tip of the lower peninsula of the present-day state of Michigan in the United States. Built around 1715\, and abandoned in 1783\, it was located along the Straits\, which connected Lake Huron and Lake Michigan of the Great Lakes of North America. Present-day Mackinaw City developed around the site of the fort\, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Fort Michilimackinac was relocated to the new Fort Mackinac (don’t get them confused) on Mackinac Island during the American Revolution\, with some of the buildings moved across the ice in the winter of 1780-1781. The remaining structures were burnt to the ground. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant on Memorial Day Weekend at historic Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City\, Michigan. \nTags: Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant\, Michigan Voyageur Rendezvous\, Michigan Rendezvous\, French & Indian War Reenactment \nView other French & Indian War Reenactments and Other Events\nView other Longhunter Rendezvous or Encampments\nView other Voyageur Rendezvous or Encampments

The Oshke Kno Kewéwen Traditional Pow Wow is held each Memorial Day Weekend\, and is named in recognition of the Pokagon Band community eagle staff carried by the Pokagon Band veterans. \n\nOshke Kno Kewéwen Traditional Pow Wow\nOshke-Kno-Kewéwen in the Potawatomi language refers to a new eagle staff\, which is much like a national flag. The Pokagon Band veterans constructed two eagle staffs\, which hold dozens of eagle feathers\, each representing a tribal family. This pow wow honors the staffs and the hundreds of Pokagon veterans and past tribal leaders represented on it. \nThe Grand Entries for the pow wow\, which are the formal start of the dancing and songs\, are at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. On both mornings\, vendors will set up before the dancing starts; gates to the Oshke Kno Kewewen Traditional Pow Wow grounds open at 10:00 a.m. \nThis event is considered a traditional pow wow. The Band’s long-running Kee-Boon-Mein-Kaa Pow Wow during Labor Day weekend is a contest pow wow\, where dancers compete before judges in different categories. A traditional pow wow is a lower-key event focused on bringing the community together. \nPart family reunion\, part traditional ceremony\, the Oshke Kno Kewewen Traditional Pow Wow is a time for native people to celebrate their identity and to visit and share with their friends in the greater community and for traditional drum groups to sing their songs\, for tribal dancers to perform their steps\, and for craftsmen and women to display their handiwork. \nPowwow Schedule\nFriday\n10:00 AM Grounds Open\n6:00 PM Potluck Dinner (traditional foods cook-off with prizes) \nSaturday\n10:00 AM Grounds Open\n9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Dancer Registration (all dancers)\n1:00 PM Grand Entry\n6:00 PM Meal for Dancers & other invited guests (must have ticket)\n6:00 PM Grand Entry \nSunday\n10:00 AM Grounds Open\n9:30 AM – 11:30 AM Continental Breakfast (while supplies last)\n1:00 PM Grand Entry \nOshke Kno Kewéwen Traditional Pow Wow Mini Gallery\n\n \nPowwow Head Staff\nMaster of Ceremonies: To Be Announced\nArena Director: To Be Announced\nFirekeeper: To Be Announced\nHead Veteran: To Be Announced\nHead Male Dancer: To Be Announced\nHead Female Dancer: To Be Announced\nInvited Drums: To Be Announced \nFree Camping Registration (includes electricity and showers)\nWednesday 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM Pokagon citizen early registration\nThursday Noon – 7:00 PM\nFriday 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM\nSaturday 9:00 AM – Noon (if spots are available) \nLocation\nRodgers Lake Campus\n58620 Sink Rd\nDowagiac\, MI 49047 \nThe Oshke-Kno-Kewéwen Traditional Pow Wow is a family friendly event. One is held during the Memorial Day Weekend at the end of May (AIS Memorial Day Weekend Powwow) and the other during Columbus Day Weekend in October (AIS Homecoming Powwow). These coincide with the three day holiday weekends. Throughout the year\, there are many pow-wows which are supported by members of the American Indianist Society. \nCraft Shows: At pow-wows members display their own craft work and study the craftwork of others. The shows are usually held in the arbor and the craftwork is displayed on blankets or benches. Ribbons are awarded\, but awards are really secondary to the learning potential presented to those who attend the show. \nEducational Seminars: Periodically\, the American Indianist Society sponsors or assists at workshops and seminars on various craft techniques\, dance steps\, specific regalia\, and singing. These workshops are announced in our newsletter\, Talking Leaves. \nArtifact Sales: Besides being a fund raiser for our organization\, artifact sales are one way to recycle items not needed or outgrown with the intention of making them available to someone looking to put an outfit together and could use a good deal. Persons who present items for the artifact sale at the AIS Memorial Day Weekend Powwow may either donate the item to our organization or receive a percentage of the final auction price with the proceeds going into our general fund. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next AIS Memorial Day Weekend Powwow at 4H Camp Marshall in Spencer\, Massachusetts. \nTags: AIS Memorial Day Weekend Powwow\, AIS Memorial Day Weekend Pow Wow\, Massachusetts Pow Wow\, Massachusetts Powwow \nView Other Massachusetts Powwows & Native American Events

Celebrate Memorial Day weekend in patriotic fashion with the Princeton Battlefield Society as they present a day of encampment and the Battle of Princeton reenactment with the Second Pennsylvania Regiment. “Washington Returns!” relives Gen. Hugh Mercer’s Jan. 3 1777 attack on the British and the Red Coats’ counter-attack. The Battle of Princeton Reenactment will include pipes and drums\, musket and cannon fire\, marching drills\, tactical formations\, camps and the arrival of Gen. George Washington. \n\nBattle of Princeton Reenactment\nAbut the Battle\nThe battle\, though small\, is considered a turning point in the American Revolution. It was the culmination of the 10-day campaign that began with George Washington’s Hail Mary pass – the crossing of the Delaware. Washington had lost 90 percent of his army\, but he managed to convince his men to stick around a few more weeks and at Princeton they saw the first victory over the British on a battlefield. The modest success provided the momentum that the Continental Army so desperately needed. \nPlaying such a pivotal role in the war\, it may surprise visitors to know that\, in 2012\, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the battlefield among its 11 most endangered historic places. \nReenactment Schedule (subject to change)\nSchedule of Selected Events\n11:30 AM – Site Opens/Muster of the Troops\n11:30 AM – Battlefield Tour\n11:45 AM – Artillery Firing Demonstration\n12:00 AM – Understanding the Uniform & Musket\n12:15 PM – Young Patriots Training Muskets & Marching\n12:30 PM – General Washington Arrives\n12:45 PM – Battlefield Tour\n1:00 PM – Infantry and Artillery Demonstrations\n2:00 PM – General Washington Answers Questions\nRain or shine \nCome Early\, Stay Late\nWhile the battle is reenacted in the early afternoon and lasts only about an hour\, a huge part of the fun is in coming early to visit the encampment to see hundreds of reenactors playing their parts\, including cavalry and artillery demonstrations and women making preparations for battle. Your family can join a guided tour of the encampment or wander on your own\, even asking questions of the reenactors. \nChildren’s Drill: After the Battle of Princeton Reenactment will be a children’s drill with wooden muskets. And don’t miss the recently reopened Visitors Center. The long-running Memorial Day Weekend event is both a ‘drama’ and festival\, a pre-1840s primitive rendezvous\, and a pow wow! \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission\nVisitors can travel through history without charge. Learn about history\, join in on the games or browse at the various trade blankets. \nPre-1840 Logan Hills Rendezvous\nIn conjunction with the Logan Hills Festival you can experience a pre-1840 Fur Trade Era Rendezvous encampment with all the trimmings. Come see where Simon Kenton and Blue Jacket spent many years of their lives exploring and making their homes. The encampment includes Mountain Men\, Fur Traders and Native Americans in period dress. See what it was like to live back in the 1700s and early 1800s. \nRendezvous occurred each year when the fur traders\, the fur trade companies\, and the Native Americans (Indians) would meet to sell their furs\, get paid\, gather supplies for the next year\, as well as drink\, socialize and catch up with their friends before they started back to work. \nToday\, people all over the country reenact these rendezvous. Many are pre-1840 events that require all reenactors to dress and camp in the primitive style of the era depicted. For some\, it’s just “primitive” camping with period clothes of the type used during the Fur Trade Era of the 1840s. All shelters used are of the type used during these times as well. \nDuring a rendezvous\, there is always an air of friendliness and fun. People are relaxing\, eating\, doing period crafts or playing period games. They are always more than willing to share the history of what they are doing with other campers or visitors. If you are a visitor and new to ‘rendezvous’\, be sure to visit with the reenactors and ask questions during public hours. \nLogan Hills Festival and Pre-1840 Rendezvous Mini Gallery\n\n \nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Saturday Schedule Details”]\nAll Day Yard sales in Zanesfield\nAll Day Craft\, Collectible Booths and Food Vendors\n9:00 Library Book Sale\n9:30 Dr. Earl Sloan Double Tourney (Petanque Court)\n10:30 Archery Competition (Encampment)\n11:00 Citizen of the Year (Shelter House)\n12:00 Grand Entry – Woodland Gathering (Main Dance Circle)\n1:00-4:00 Pony Rides (Marmon Valley Farms – east 1 mile on CR 153)\n2:00 Taloga Outdoor Drama (Drama Area -Weather permitting)\n4:00 Woodland Gathering Resumes (Main Dance Circle)\n4:30 Hawk and Knife Competition (Encampment)\n5:00 -9:00 Hog Roast\n5:30 Woodland Gathering Closing Ceremony (Dance Circle)\n6:00 Clarence Gibson Shooting Contest abd Finals (Petanque Court)\n6:00 to 10:00 Musical Entertainment by American Entertainment (Shelter House)\n8:00 Encampment only is closed to the public[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Sunday Schedule Details”]\nAll Day Craft\, Collectible Booths and Food Vendors and Scavenger Hunt Doubles Tourney (Petanque Court)\n10:00 Church Service All Welcome (Encampment)\n12:00 Grand Entry – Woodland Gathering (Main Dance Circle)\n1:00-4:00 Pony Rides (Marmon Valley Farms – east 1 mile on CR 153)\n2:00 Kids Games (Encampment\n4:30 Closing Ceremony- Woodland Gathering (Main Dance Circle)\n5:00 Taloga Outdoor Drama (Drama Area – Weather permitting)\n8:00 Encampment only is closed to the public at 8:00 pm\nSchedules may change without notice[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Monday Schedule Details”]\nAll Day Craft\, Collectible Booths and Food Vendors\n7:30 to 11:00 Pancake & Sausage Breakfast (Shelter House)\n9:00 Parade through the village to Zanesfield Cemetery for Memorial Service\n9:30 Open Court Play (Petanque Court\n10:00 Musical Entertainment (Entertainment Stage)\n11:30 Pickers Auction (Auction Stage)\n1:00 – 4:00 Pony Rides (Marmon Valley Farms – east 1 mile on CR 153)\n11:30 Pickers Auction (Auction Stage)\n11:30 Country Luncheon Sponsored by the Zanesfield United Methodist Church (Church Downtown)\n12:30 Lizard Pull (Encampment)\n1;00 -4:00 Pony Rides (Marmon Valley Farms – east 1 mile on CR 153)\n2:00 Taloga Outdoor Drama (Drama Area – Weather permitting)\nMusical Entertainment to be Announced\nBring Lawn Chairs for your entertainment comfort[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nCamping\nThere is an encampment organized by the Mountain Men Rendezvous. Soon after\, Mexican authorities named Graham’s wild settlement “Roaring Camp.” Roaring Camp is nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the Town of Felton\, California. Located just six miles up the hill from Santa Cruz lies a re-creation of an 1880’s logging town\, operating trains every day of the year except for Christmas Day. Roaring Camp is a heritage railway with authentic 1880’s steam locomotives operating on our Redwood Forest Steam Train excursion and 1920’s era Beach Trains to Santa Cruz. \nIn 1842\, Graham established the first saw mill west of the Mississippi. Fortunately\, the Big Trees here were spared the woodman’s axe\, and the area’s first railroad\, the Santa Cruz & Felton\, began carrying tourists to the Big Trees and the beach in 1875\, with the Santa Cruz\, Big Trees & Pacific RY has been operating along the 1875 Santa Cruz & Felton route since 1985. \n \nMark you calendar for the annual Roaring Camp Civil War Battles and Encampment in Felton\, California next Memorial Day Weekend. \nTags: Roaring Camp Civil War Battles and Encampment\, Roaring Camp Civil War Battles & Encampment\, Roaring Camp Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events
