The Battle was the first planned attack by the American army during the Revolutionary War and aimed at liberating Philadelphia from British control. Eleven of Historic Germantown’s sites were involved in the October 4\, 1777 Battle\, with Cliveden as the main stage. The tradition of remembering the Battle of Germantown through reenactment dates to the 150th anniversary in 1927\, where people dressed in their ancestors’ clothing to show their connections to the historic event. Today\, the Revolutionary Germantown Festival and Germantown Battle Reenactments that it includes\, tells the diverse stories of everyone involved\, from General George Washington\, to Ned Hector\, an African American Patriot teamster\, and even the pacifist Quakers who got caught in the cross-fire. \nHistory of the Battle of Germantown\nOne day in history\, General George Washington’s daring campaign to liberate the occupied capital city\, Philadelphia\, came to an abrupt end on the Germantown Road on October 4\, 1777. Washington planned a pre-dawn attack on Germantown\, where thousands of British soldiers were camped in the fields\, living off the crops and livestock of the local residents. Homes were commandeered as headquarters for the British officers\, including General William Howe at Stenton. Nearly 12\,000 Continental troops were marshaled for the attack\, yet 120 British infantrymen proved unbeatable as they barricaded themselves inside the thick stone walls of Cliveden\, the summer house of the wealthy Loyalist Benjamin Chew.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nFierce fighting raged for several hours throughout the area\, but Washington’s troops were eventually forced to retreat back into Montgomery County and the British tightened their hold on the town. After the Battle\, local teenagers helped to bury the dead in mass graves. More than 150 American soldiers were killed — about half of them on the grounds of Cliveden — and 70 British. Hundreds more on both sides were wounded. The Battle of Germantown left indelible scars on the community.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Revolutionary Germantown Festival and Battle Reenactment on the first Saturday in October around the Cliveden Mansion in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. \n \nTags: Revolutionary Germantown Festival\, Germantown Battle Reenactment\, Battle of Germantown Reenactment\, Revolutionary War Reenactmetn \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments\, Musters\, Encampments & Other Events

The American Civil War battle reenactment is held on the actual battlefield of the 1864 Battle of Droop mountain\, at the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park located several miles South of the Town of Hillsboro\, West Virginia along U.S. highway 219 at the top of Droop Mountain. \nThe Droop Mountain Battleground is quiet today. Signs and markers scattered about the park tell stories of a battle fought. Artifacts in a small museum reveal history of both sides of the war. And on the second weekend of October each year\, that silence will be shattered by the Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment. The anniversary reenactment will play out again by host Bryans Battery Reenactment Group and other members of the West Virginia Reenactors Association. The event is open to the public with no admission charge. \nThe weekend includes a reenactment scenario tied to historical facts. The Saturday battle reflects the skirmish at Mill Point leading up to Droop Mountain. The Sunday battle will be the Battle of Droop Mountain itself\, reenacted on a portion of the actual battlefield. An unscripted tactical exercise covering most of the park grounds is scheduled for Saturday. Authentic Sutlers are welcome at Droop Mountain and there is a pre-registration process (see below form link) along with other Sutler and reenactor participation information. \n \nEarly Bird Registration\nPRE-REGISTRATION DATES: The Reenactor registration this year will be $10.00 if post marked\non or before September 1 and $15.00 if post marked after that date or for walk-ons. As usual\, Children 12 and under are free\, but waiver and registration forms must be completed for them. All minors (under age 18) need parental or guardian signatures. \nArtillery: First 5 Artillery Batteries who pre-register will receive bounties of $75.00 for\nMountain Howitzers or ¾ scale cannons\, and full sized (57 inch wheels) will receive $100.00\nbounties. \nRegistration forms can be found on the Registration Page of this website where they can be downloaded\, printed\, filled out and returned with the registration Fee to Bryans Battery c/o Tim Walker\, 267 Fern Hollow Drive\, Hillsboro\, WV 24946 \nDownload Forms & Schedules\nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \nSchedule of Events\nFriday\nCamp Set-up\n6pm -11pm Registration Open \nSaturday\n7am- Reveille\n8am- Registration opens\n10:00am Officers Meeting at registration & military camps open for spectators\n1:30 pm to 2:30 pm -Infantry Tactical which will roll into the 2:30 battle\n2:30 pm to 3:30 pm -Skirmish at Mill Point (battle)\n6pm -7pm –Reenactors’ dinner at Registration Area\n7 pm -9:30 pm Concert/Military Ball (Pending location of a period string band.)\n10 pm- Night Firing of Artillery\n11:30 pm\, Quiet in the Camps \nSunday\n8 am- Reveille\n10 am-Church Services in Battlefield\n12:30 am -Officers Meeting at Bryans Battery Field Camp.\n1:30 pm –The Battle of Droop Mountain \nLocation\nDroop Mountain Battlefield State Park\n683 Droop Park Road\nHillsboro\, WV 24946\n(304) 653-4254 \nFor More Information\nTim Walker: tim@amrmail.org; 304-653-4737 \n \nAbout the Battle of Droop Mountain\nOn November 6\, 1863\, the federal army of Brigadier General William W. Averell\, in his second attempt to disrupt the Virginia-Tennessee Railroad at Salem\, Virginia\, faced again the Confederate troops of Brigadier General John Echols. Throughout the morning\, Echols’ smaller confederate army held the high ground and blocked the highway with artillery\, but in the afternoon was overwhelmed by the crushing advance of federal infantry on his left flank. Following the collapse of his lines\, General Echols retreated south into Virginia with the remnants of his command.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nFederal Troops occupied Lewisburg on November 7\, 1863\, but being burdened with prisoners and captured livestock\, General Averell elected to return to his headquarters in Beverly\, West Virginia\, waiting until early December to lead a third and ultimately successful attack on the vital railroad. Operations in the Shenandoah Valley in the spring of 1864 drew remaining confederate troops out of West Virginia\, thus leaving the new state securely under the control of the federal government for the remainder of the war.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment on the second weekend of October at the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park near Hillsboro\, West Virginia. \nTags: Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment\, Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment\, Battle of Droop Mt Reenactment\, Battle of Droop Mt Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Thousands of people from across North America descend on the San Manuel Pow Wow the second weekend each October to compete for $250\,000 in prizes for dancing\, drumming and singing contests. The Pow Wow hosts hundreds of dancers and more notably\, several illustrious drums from throughout Indian Country. The event is hosted by the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians\, presented in the spirit of togetherness and affirmation of Native American culture. \n\nSan Manuel Pow Wow at Cal State San Bernardino\nThe San Manuel Pow Wow is always free to the public. This is an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the finest Native American singers\, dancers\, and drummers in North America and Canada. It’s also a time to reaffirm our cultural and spiritual roots\, both for individual tribes and for Native Americans as a whole. \nFriday: The San Manuel Pow Wow is a three-day event of music and dance that is both a celebration and competition with participants vying for prizes and honoring enduring Native traditions. Friday activity begins around sundown\, with an elder blessing the grounds with sage and offering a prayer for good spirit and a good time. This is traditionally followed by an exhibition of bird singing and dancing. The grand entry follows after which it’s time for the dancing (contest\, exhibition\, and intertribal). At the end of the evening\, there is a small procession removing the flags from the arena proper\, which ends each day. \nSaturday: Two grand entries highlight Saturday’s schedule\, one in the afternoon\, the other in the evening. Exhibitions of gourd dancing by Southern tribal representatives and bird singing/dancing precede the afternoon session; and a bird singing/dancing exhibition takes place before the evening’s grand entry. \nSunday: Both of the Grand Entries are followed by more dancing (contest\, exhibition\, and intertribal). Sunday features one grand entry in the afternoon\, which is again preceded by exhibitions of gourd dancing and bird singing/dancing. Then\, it’s time for the climactic round of contest dancing. It’s the last opportunity for all of the competitors to impress the judges. Once that is over\, the judges’ votes are tabulated\, the winners announced\, and prizes awarded. Unlike the other two day of the San Manuel Pow Wow\, however\, there is a more formal\, spiritual closing ceremony that marks the official end of the Pow Wow. \nFree Admission – Public Welcome \nSan Manuel Pow Wow Mini Gallery\n\n \nPOW WOW SCHEDULE \nFriday\n5pm – Blessing Of The Grounds\n6pm – Bird Singing And Dancing\n8pm – Grand Entry\nMidnight – Retreat Colors\nSaturday\n11am – Gourd Dancing\nNoon – Bird Singing And Dancing\n1pm – Grand Entry\n6pm – Bird Singing And Dancing\n8pm – Grand Entry\nMidnight – Retreat Colors\nSunday\n11am – Gourd Dancing\nNoon – Bird Singing And Dancing\n1pm – Grand Entry\n6pm – Announce Winners | Retreat Colors \nFor More Information:\nSan Manuel Pow Wow Committee  909-425-3450  powwowsanmanuel@gmail.com \n \nContestants will compete for over $250\,000 in prizes.\nParticipant Registration begins at 5 p.m. \nMEN’S DANCE CONTESTS\n6 Winners From Each Men’s Category:\n$1\,500 $1\,200 $1\,000 $800 $400 $200 \nGolden Age (65+): Northern/Southern\nSeniors (50-64) Combined: Northern\, Southern\, and Fancy/Grass\nAdult (18-49): Northern Contemporary\, Northern Traditional\, Chicken Dance\, Southern Straight\, Grass\, Northern Fancy\, Southern Fancy \nWOMEN’S DANCE CONTESTS\n6 Winners From Each Women’s Category:\n$1\,500 $1\,200 $1\,000 $800 $400 $200 \nGolden Age (65+): Northern/Southern\nSeniors (50-64) Combined: Northern\, Southern\, and Fancy/Jingle\nAdult (18-49): Northern Buckskin\, Southern Buckskin\, Northern Cloth\, Southern Cloth\, Jingle\, Fancy Shawl \nTEEN DANCE\nWinners From Each Teens Category:\n$500 $300 $200 $100 \nJUNIORS DANCE\nWinners From Each Teens Category:\n$250 $200 $150 $100 \nDRUM OVER $100\,000\nBring your best singers!\nAll Styles Combined\, no separate categories\n1st-$20\,000 • 2-$18\,000 • 3-$15\,000\n4-$13\,000 • 5-$12\,000 • 6-$10\,000\n7-$9\,000 • 8-$8\,000 • 9-$7\,000\n10-$6\,000 • 11-$5\,000 • 12-$4\,000\n13-$3\,000 • 14 through 17-$2\,000 each \nYOUTH DRUM\n1st-$5\,000 • 2nd-$3\,000 • 3rd-$1\,000\n4th-$500 • 5th-$500 • 6th-$250\n7th-$250 • 8th-$250 • 9th-$250 • 10th-$250\nOther contest dancing TBD \nVENDORS\nWith Respect To Indian Culture\, Native American Artists Only. Columbus Day remains a national holiday\, however\, and cities such as Cincinnati have recently rejected proposals to establish Indigenous Peoples Days. \nBerkeley Indigenous Peoples Day Pow Wow Schedule (subject to change) \nExhibition Dancing 10:00 am – Noon\nGourd Dancing 11:00 am\nGrand Entry 12:00 noon – followed by Round Dancing\, Intertribal Dancing & Contest Dancing\nClosing Ceremony 6:00 pm\nRaffles all day till 6 pm. \nHead Staff\nMaster of Ceremonites: To Be Announced\nArena Director: To Be Announced\nHead Man Dancer: To Be Announced\nHead Woman Dancer: To Be Announced\nHead Gourd Dancer: To Be Announced\nHost Northern Drum: To Be Announced\nHost Southern Drum: To Be Announced\nHead Judge: Gilbert To Be Announced\nContest Coordinator: To Be Announced\nPow Wow Coordinator: To Be Announced\nVendors Coordinator: To Be Announced \nLocation\nM.L. They were about a mile from the town when they were fired upon by Seminoles. The 5 men left the cart in the hands of the Seminoles and escaped to Newnansville and reported the event at Fort Gillelaud. \n30 armed men were sent out to assess the situation and heavy rain started to fall. Although they did not find the Seminole warriors\, they did find the cart and were able to return to the fort with it. The Seminoles had attempted to burn it but the rain had extinguished the fire. Military spies were sent during the night to discover the location and strength of the Seminole warriors but they did not find them. \nConvinced that the Seminole Warriors must be hiding in the San Felasco Hammock\, Colonel John Warren marched out at the head of 150 men the following morning\, September 18th\, at 6:00 AM to engage the Seminole warriors. His forces consisted of 100 mounted militia men\, 25 former militia\, and 25 United States regualrs with the fort’s 24 pound cannon. Colonel Warren’s forces advanced in three columns\, the right led by Col. Warrren\, the left by Col. Wills and the center by Capt. Tompkins with the regulars and the howitzer cannon.\nWithin three quarters of a mile of the hammock they were met by the Seminole warriors. The battle immediately commenced along the right wing and center. The Seminole warriors attempted to turn the left flank but the men under Leut. Col. Wills drove them back into the thick oak scrub on the border of the hammock and then dismounted and drove them into the cannon’s line of fire. The Seminole warriors then attempted to flank the right but a charge from Capt. Walker and Lieut Bruten’s forces\, drove the Seminoles once again in front of the howitzer. \nThe Seminoles mortally wounded one of the cannon crew as they twice charged the center attempting to take the howitzer\, but were repelled. The Seminoles eventually retreated into the dense hammock where the would have the advantage because the soldiers could not follow them with the cannon. Instead of following them\, the Colonel’s forces waited to see if the Seminole Warriors would return but when they didn’t\, the Colonel’s forces withdrew without further engagement. \nThe battle lasted an hour and a half with seven whites wounded\, one of them fatally. Five horses were wounded and one horse killed. It was reported that some Seminole warriors had been seen to fall during the battle but Col. Warren’s forces were unable to verify any Seminole losses. \nOn the 17th of September\, 1836\, a cart laden with corn and attended by three white men and two black men was on the Picolata road returning to the town of Newnansville (now part of Alachua\, FL).
