The Kee-Boon-Mein-Kaa Pow Wow takes place each Labor Day Weekend\, and is free and open to the general public. Thousands are expected to be on hand at the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi’s Rodgers Lake campus to celebrate the Labor Day weekend\, as well as take part in the annual Kee-Boon-Mein-Kaa Pow Wow. \n\nKee-Boon-Mein-Kaa Pow Wow\nA water walk\, which will begai at the Gage Street lake in Dowagiac and be trekked through Dowagiac to the campus\, will kick off festivities on Friday. Relax in a historic tavern while listening to music of the era. Musicians playing violins\, mandolins\, guitars\, and even bagpipes move from tavern to tavern and rove throughout the area. The coffeehouse is a center of entertainment and a place where you can enjoy a game of checkers or chess. \nBattle Reenactment and Cannon\nThrill to the boom of the full-sized Revolutionary War cannon. The Mad River Light Artillery Revolutionary War reenactor group sets up their bronze British Light six-pounder at the top of the hill near the flagpole and militia encampment. This group will demonstrate cannon firing many times throughout each day. \nEach afternoon\, the Fair at New Boston features the excitement of a battle reenactment. Southern terminus of the 138-mile route was staked out with a “zero mile post” seven miles southeast of the Chattahoochee. A village sprouted around the point\, eventually to become the city of Atlanta. Long found a way of not having to tunnel through Missionary Ridge\, but in mountainous north Georgia\, Chetoogeta Mountain\, thirty miles south of Chattanooga\, had to be dug through. Work began July 1848 and the tunnel was opened October 1849. Track was laid and the first train passed through on May 9\, 1850. \nDuring the Civil War the Western & Atlantic was an important Confederate supply line\, especially for the Army of Tennessee. The unsuccessful Union army raid led by civilian James J. Andrews on April 2\, 1862 was intended to disrupt it. In the Georgia Campaign of 1864 the W & A served both the retreating and advancing armies. \nUnion forces seized Tunnel Hill in the opening days of the campaign. On the morning of May 7 Brig. Gen. Jefferson Davis’ Fourteenth Corps division advanced toward Tunnel Hill. Maj. J. T. Holmes’ 52nd Ohio was in the lead and found 50-100 Confederate cavalry near the town. After a brisk skirmish the Southern horsemen retired back toward Johnston’s main line along Rocky Face Ridge. The Confederates did not try to damage the tunnel and only took up some rails\, which were quickly replaced. It was used as an encampment from 1838-39. The park is the burial site for two Cherokee Chiefs who died during the removal (“Fly South” and “Whitepath”). This long\, cruel relocation has become known as the “Trail of Tears” and by Native Americans as “The Trail Where They Cried”. \nAbout the Hopkinsville Trail of Tears Pow Wow\nThe idea for hosting a Pow Wow in Hopkinsville was developed by the Trail of Tears Commission\, Inc. as a way to commemorate in 1988 the 150th Anniversary of the tragic and cruel Cherokee removal from ancestral homelands in the southeast across the Mississippi to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. Fort Connah was a Hudson’s Bay Trading Post established in 1846. One of the three original buildings still remains and is believed to be the oldest standing building in Montana. The fort was active from 1846 to 1871. Another cabin has been moved onto the property and renovated for administrative purposes\, historical artifacts and displays. An 1870s log cabin-building has also been moved to Fort Connah for renovation. These two cabins and the original building will replicate the buildings that once made-up the original trading post. Cantigny Revolutionary War Reenactment is among the park’s most popular events. \n\nCantigny Revolutionary War Reenactment\nMore than 400 Revolutionary War living history actors will be on site\, many of whom will pitch tents and camp on the grounds.
