Called from Oklahoma as an Army draftee in World War II\, he served nearly three years in Europe\, receiving several infantry unit citations. After he returned from war\, he faced the prospect of adjustment to the scars of wartime service and the hardships of finding a livelihood. He was selected as the first Indian advisory member of the American Indian Heritage Foundation when it was established in 1973. He was honored as the American Indian of the Year two years in a row at Son Hose\, California. This dance contest has been named in his honor to note his accomplishments in preserving Indian dance culture for the enjoyment of future generations. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next BYU Harold Cedartree Pow Wow at the BYU Wilkinson Student Center in Provo\, Utah. \nTags: BYU Cedartree Memorial Pow Wow\, BYU Harold Cedartree Pow Wow\, BYU Cedartree Pow Wow\, BYU Cedartree Memorial Powwow\, BYU Cedartree Memorial Competition Powwow\, BYU Cedartree Powwow\, Utah Powwow\, Utah Pow Wow\, Brigham Young University Cedartree Memorial Pow Wow\, BYU Cedartree Memorial Competition Pow Wow \nView other Utah Pow Wows

Patriots’ Path: Steps to Revolution is an original short play that uses historical records to portray Littleton’s citizens in the shift from loyal British subjects to American revolutionaries. The Littleton Historical Society brings local history to life with a cast of local residents portraying actual men and women of Littleton who lived 250 years ago through the tumultuous events leading up to the Revolution. \nSome were Tories loyal to the crown; others were Patriots who protested British attempts to revoke their rights as colonists. One woman who was enslaved yearned for the freedoms others took for granted. As the story unfolds\, characters reveal their feelings and tell about the impact these events had on their lives and those of their families. \nFriday\, March 29th\, 7:30 pm \nFree Admission \nLocation\nFirst Church Unitarian\n19 Foster Street\nLittleton\, MA 01460 \nSponsor\nLittleton Historical Society\nCall (978) 486-8202\nEmail littleton.histsociety@verizon.net\nWebsite \nDuring the decade between 1764 and 1775\, colonists who were once loyal subjects of the British Empire and had fought with British troops in the French and Indian War made life-changing decisions to became Patriots who\, little more than 10 years later\, fought in the Revolution against the British. There will be time after the performance to ask questions and share ideas. The discussion will be moderated by Susan Harvey\, member of the High School faculty\, and Roland Gibson\, retired educator. \nThe Society thanks the Littleton Cultural Council for its support. We would also like to thank the First Church Unitarian for providing the venue; LCTV and its director\, Mark Crory; members of the Color Guard of the Boxborough Minutemen\, and members of the 1st Regiment of the Foot Guards; and cast and crew of Littleton residents who generously gave their time and effort to the production. \nThe performance is in conjunction with the Paths of Patriots Project of Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. The program is supported in part by a grant from the Littleton Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \nThe Program is free and open to the public. The Church is handicapped accessible. Parking is available at the lot in back of the Fire Department across the street; and is also available at 300 King Street\, just a short walk from the Church. Information is also available on www.littletonhistoricalsociety.org and the Littleton Historical Society’s facebook page. \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Littleton Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the Littleton Historical Society presentation of the Patriots’ Path: Steps to Revolution play at the First Church Unitarian in Littleton\, Massachusetts. \nTags: Patriots Path Steps to Revolution\, Revolutionary War Reenactment \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments\, Musters\, Encampments & Other Events

When the main drum beats at the “Learning to Walk Together” powwow\, it symbolizes the heartbeat of Mother Earth. It is a colorful and active tradition for Native Americans to celebrate life and honor relatives. All of this happens on Northern Michigan University’s campus at the NMU Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow. This traditional powwow invites NMU students and community members alike to appreciate and participate in the traditions of Native American dancers\, singers\, artists and vendors from all over the Great Lakes region. \n\nNMU Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow\nThe NMU Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow is held in Marquette because of its central location for the five tribes in the Upper Peninsula. The pow wow begins with the grand entry and the flag song followed by veterans’ honor song. All Veterans – male/female\, Native/non-Native are honored this way. The Emcee will provide information on the dances including: male and female traditional dances\, jingle dress and grass dance\, and male and female fancy dance. Social dances\, such as the inter-tribal\, round dance and two-step\, are also featured and the audience is invited to participate. Artisan and vendor booths provide a variety of craft items\, reference materials\, and food. A pow wow can truly be a cultural learning experience. \nThere also are activities for audience members to participate in at the NMU Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow such as social dances that include the inter-tribal\, round dance and two-step. Throughout the day there also will be artisan and vendor booths selling craft items\, reference materials and food. Anyone with an interest in Native American culture is invited to come check out what will be going on at the Learning to Walk Together Traditional Pow Wow. \nDuring the grand entries\, there is continual drumming that represents the pulse of the earth. Dancers go in a clockwise\, circular direction around the drum. This event is an opportunity for Native American communities in the region to come together for celebration\, but it also provides non-native citizens the opportunity to appreciate these traditions. Native cultures are steeped in ritual\, so there are certain etiquette guidelines the Native American Student Association encourages attendees to read before attending the event. \nAdmission\n$5.00 General Admission\nFree NMU students w/NMU ID \nHead Staff\nArena Director: To Be Announced\nFire Keeper: To Be Announced\nHead Veteran Dancer: To Be Announced\nHead Male Dancer: To Be Announced\nHead Lady Dancer: To Be Announced\nHonor Guard: To Be Announced\nMaster of Ceremonies: To Be Announced\nHost Drums: To Be Announced\nOther Drums: To Be Announced \n \nLocation\nVandament Arena – NMU Campus\n1401 Presque Isle Avenue\nMarquette\, MI 49855 \nFor More Information\nNASA Co-presidents – Kristina Misegan\, kmisegan@nmu.edu or Daabii Reinhardt\, breinhar@nmu.edu or feel free to call the Center (906) 227-1397. \nSchedule:\nDoors Open: 11:00 a.m.\nGrand Entries at noon and 6:00 p.m. \nPow Wow Sponsors\nThe NMU Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow is presented by the Native American Student Association with the help of numerous university and community organizations and individuals\, which illustrates the event’s motto of “Learning to Walk Together.” \nPow Wow Etiquette for Visitors\nSome of those etiquette suggestions include attendees should not sit in a place where there is a blanket; that space is reserved for dancers and singers. There are bleachers available for additional seating. Additionally\, participants should wait until the head male and head female dancers begin to dance before joining. Also\, nothing should be picked up from the ground\, especially feathers. If something does fall to the ground\, the emcee\, arena director or head veteran dancer should be notified. At the event\, if attendees have any questions about proper etiquette\, they can ask the emcee or event volunteers. These suggestions and others can be found on the Center for Native American Studies website. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the annual NMU Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow at Northern Michigan University in Marquette\, Michigan in March. \nTags: NMU Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow\, NMU Learning to Walk Together Powwow\, Michigan Powwow\, Michigan Pow Wow \nView Other Michigan Pow Wows

To commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Fort Blakeley\, we have an event-filled day of exciting tours\, informative educational programming\, and lively demonstrations planned. The Battle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment will be one of the largest reenactments of Alabama’s largest Civil War battle held in several years. The event will feature reenactments of the intense skirmishing which took place along the lines at Blakeley during the week-long siege of the fort in April of 1865 and the last grand charge of the Civil War which resulted in its capture will highlight the day’s events. \n\nBattle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment\nAlso included will be guided tours of the park’s battlefield\, weapons demonstrations\, and a special exhibit of artifacts associated with the fighting at Fort Blakeley. Souvenirs\, food\, and drinks may be purchased at the Wehle Center throughout the day. \nThe original and well-preserved battlefield will be the site of an authentic representation of conditions the 83rd Ohio Infantry and other Union troops experience before unseeding Confederate Brig. Gen. Francis Marion Cockrell’s defenders from four redoubts and other earthen fortifications. \nBefort the Battle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment\, it will be a living history encampment where both the federal troops and the Confederate troops will be working in the rifle pits and in the federal and Confederate works\, shoring up their shelters. Spectators will be shown some food demonstrations as well as digging in\, and there will probably some light skirmishes throughout the day as far as weapons demonstrations go. Starting at 10 a.m. and until about 3:30 p.m.\, the public will have an opportunity to tour the encampments\, see group demonstrations and talk to the individual soldiers. \nThe battle reenactment will cap off in the evening with a final assault that will be portraying the 83rd Ohio Regiment attacking Redoubt 4 and taking Redoubt 4\, which was manned by Cockrell’s Missouri Brigade. Then a federal flag will be planted in an approximately close area to where it happened in 1865. So the battle reenactment is going to be on the same field\, the same works and following as close as possible the actual flow of the battle. \nSaturday Hours: 8:00 AM-5:00 PM\nAdmission: $10 for adults; $5 for children 6-12\nMore Infomation: (251) 626-0798 or e-mail: BlakeleyPark@aol.com \nSaturday Schedule of Public Events (subject to change)\n8:00 AM Camps Open (Union and Confederate Lines)\n8:30 AM Artifact Exhibit Opens at Wehle Center\n9:00 AM-10:30 AM “Battles of Fort Blakeley and Spanish Fort” cruise\n9:00 AM-10:30 AM Weapons Demonstrations and Battlefield Tours\n11:00 AM-12:30 PM “Battles of Fort Blakeley and Spanish Fort” cruise\n11:00 AM Reenactment of a Confederate Sortie (attack from defenses)\n12:30 PM Lecture on Civil War artifacts at Wehle Center\n1:00 PM-2:30 PM Weapons Demonstrations and Battlefield Tours\n3:00 PM Reenactment of Assault on Fort Blakeley\n4:30 PM Camps Close (Union and Confederate Lines)\n4:30 PM Artifact Exhibit at Wehle Center Closes\nOn Saturday prior to the Battle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment of the final assault on Fort Blakeley in the afternoon we’ll also offer two special cruises along the Tensaw River focusing on the military actions here and at nearby Spanish Fort: \nBattle of Fort Blakeley Reenactment and Spanish Fort History Cruise \n9:00-10:30 AM and 11:00 AM-12:30 PM\nCruise Tickets: $27 for adults; $17 for children 6-12\n(includes complimentary admission to Reenactment events)\nFor reservations call 251-626-5581 \nJoin us on a historic voyage of discovery along the lower Delta’s scenic waterways as we explore the major battles of the Civil War’s “Mobile Campaign” from the rivers on which its major actions took place! Mobile was the last major city to remain in Southern hands during the war\, and Union army and navy forces converged on the area around Blakeley in the spring of 1865 in an attempt to capture the town. This narrated cruise will take guests alongside the Confederate strongholds of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakeley\, guardians of the approaches to Mobile and scene of some of the fiercest fighting during the war in Alabama. We will also visit the sites of Batteries Huger and Tracy\, both long lost key positions in the Confederacy’s defenses of Mobile\, and learn about the numerous Confederate and Union warships which vied for control of area waterways during the Civil War’s last major campaign. At the Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, you will learn about the second Seminole Indian War from soldiers in period dress\, camped in front of the fort; this free event includes musket firing demonstrations and programs in the fort at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both days. \nAdmission Free – Parking Free – Public Welcome \nPark Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. \nAs the Second Seminole War escalated across Florida in 1835\, U.S. Army orders were issued to build a string of over 200 forts to garrison men and supplies in an effort to supress the Seminole Indians. As the army arrived in central Florida on Christmas Day\, 1837\, the stockade was aptly christened Fort Christmas. Fort Christmas is a typical Seminole Indian War fort\, made of tall pine pickets. The fort is 80 linear square feet\, with two block houses that are 20 square feet each\, with a storehouse and a powder magazine within the walls of the fort. The replica of Fort Christmas serves as a museum with exhibits focusing on the Second Seminole War and pioneer life in Florida. Today\, the replica fort and museum is the centerpiece of Fort Christmas Historical Park. \n \nIn addition to the park’s full scale replica of the 19th century fort\, seven restored cracker era buildings are open for tours. These pioneer homes and a school building are furnished with period furniture\, appliances\, kitchen items and hand tools. A few of these Florida cracker homes included the Beehead Ranch house\, the Taylor Creek Yates home\, and the 1916 Union Schoolhouse. This family friendly event is extremely popular\, one of Central Florida’s most interesting traditional gatherings. The Cracker houses on display belonged to families with familiar names from Florida’s pioneer days\, such as Simmons\, Wheeler\, Bass\, and Yates. \nLocation\nFort Christmas Historical Park\n1300 North Fort Christmas Road\nChristmas\, FL 32709\n407-254-9312 \nFor More Information: Call 407-254-9312 or Email Trudy.Trask@ocfl.net \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Christmas Cracker Christmas on the weekend before Easter at the Fort Christmas Historical Park in Christmas\, Florida. \nTags:Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Militia Reenactment\, Fort Christmas Historical Park\, Fort Christmas \nView other History Festivals & Events

During Fort Dobbs’ largest event of the year\, join the soldiers\, settlers\, and American Indians who inhabited North Carolina’s colonial frontier and learn about their lives and struggles through encampments\, trades demonstrations\, and tactical demonstrations. The centuries-old animosities between England and France played out in the New World in the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Fort Dobbs State Historic Site will recapture the struggles of that time during the “War for Empire” program\, in the largest French and Indian War re-enactment in the Carolinas that also will honor a Cherokee leader. \n\nFort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment\nTensions spiraled into war with shifting allegiances among the British\, French and dozens of American Indian tribes\, principally the Cherokee in western North Carolina. “Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment” will examine the different people living on the North Carolina frontier in the 1750s and offer a glimpse of frontier life. \nDuring our Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment\, trade demonstrations will include stone carving\, spinning\, cooking and woodworking; skills necessary for day-to-day survival. Visitors will meet soldiers\, American Indians and civilians from the 18th century as the French and Indian War history is illustrated with re-enactors. Encampments\, trades and crafts\, musical performances and weapons demonstrations will be entertaining and enlightening as this history comes to life. Battle re-enactments at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday will be a program highlight. Vendors will offer reproduction period merchandise. \nThe educational program at this state historic site gives life to North Carolina’s past experiences and traditions and demonstrates the value of living history to students and adults. \nWar of Empire Features: \n\n\n\nThe Battle of Fort Dobbs each day at 1:30 p.m.\nCostumed interpreters portraying provincial soldiers and Cherokee warriors\n1st person presentation of historical figures\nOngoing demonstrations of 18th century military\, civilian and American-Indian camp life\nScholarly lectures each day at 3 p.m.\n18th century market fair\nMusic\, period entertainment\, 18th century food and much more!\n\n\n\nFor more information\, please call (704) 873-5882 or visit www.fortdobbs\,org. Fort Dobbs is the only state historic site dedicated to the period of the French and Indian War (1754-1763)\, also known as the Seven Years’ War. It is North Carolina’s only link to a war for empire that crossed five continents and lasted nearly 10 years. Fort Dobbs is within the Division of State Historic Sites administered by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. \nAdmission: $4.00; children under age 5 are free. \nHours:\nSaturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m.\nSunday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nReenactors: Anyone wishing to participate in the Fort Dobbs War for Empire Reenactment needs to register. From US 21\, turn left onto Fort Dobbs Road. From NC 115\, veer right onto S. Chipley Ford Road\, then turn right onto Fort Dobbs Road. \nFor More Information: Call 704-873-5882; Email: info@fortdobbs.org \n \nHistory of Fort Dobbs\nFort Dobbs was the only permanent frontier provincial fort in the colony of North Carolina. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27\, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded\, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761\, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766. \nReconstruction of Fort Dobbs\nSoon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909\, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site\, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered\, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn 2003\, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials\, historians\, historic building specialists\, architects\, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible\, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again. \nFollowing several other facility improvements to the site\, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago. We hope\, with your support\, to have Fort Dobbs open as a living history exhibit on a grand scale by early 2019![/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment in April at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville\, North Carolina. \nTags: Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment\, Fort Dobbs War for Empire\, War for Empire\, French & Indian War Reenactment \nView other War of 1812 Encampments & Reenactments
