Reenactors and Civil War buffs will converge on Princeton from all over the Midwest for two days of Civil War battle re-enactments\, storytelling\, music\, dance and more. Shadows of the Blue and Gray presents a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts to not only learn about life during the 1860s\, but to actually immerse themselves in a sort of living play about the Civil War era. \n\nShadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War Festival\nSpectators will smell the gun powder and hear the cannon fire of a real life Civil War battle skirmish. At the Shadows Of The Blue and Gray Civil War Festival they’ll witness the carnage that comes as a result of battle\, and see up close the agony of soldiers being treated in a makeshift field hospital. \nThe Shadows Of The Blue and Gray Civil War Festival is not all war and gore. Festival-goers also will have the chance to watch how period artisans make things such as candles\, brooms\, clothes and blacksmith goods. They’ll be able to shake hands with President and Mrs. Lincoln or watch Clara Barton demonstrate common nursing techniques. A costume-optional dance will take place under the stars and children will be invited to participate in an interactive scavenger hunt. \nParticipant Amenities\nWe are offering bounties to all that take the field. South Dakota celebrates Native Americans’ Day on what is widely recognized in the rest of the country as “Columbus Day on the second Monday of October.” Native American Day is a day to celebrate the customs\, culture and history of Native Americans — and that’s exactly what the Multi-Cultural Center of Sioux Falls wants you to do at the Native American Day Wacipi. A Wacipi (pow wow) and community dinner will be held in honor of the day and will be open to the public starting at 6:00 P.M. \nAs part of the Native American Day Wacipi celebration\, children who are regular participants of the Multi-Cultural Center after-school programs will be invited to attend an early dinner and mini Wacipi. The Tama Intertribal Pow Wow\, sponsored by The Lower Muskogee Creek Tribe\, is a festival that celebrates Native American culture\, featureing a dramatic depiction of Native American Life in a living village circa 1800. With demonstrations in archery\, flint knapping\, weapons\, hunting camp\, drumming\, dancing and storytelling\, there will be entertainment for all. Lots of food and drinks will be available including Indian Fry Bread. \n\nTama Intertribal Pow Wow\nFriday dancing will begin with the Grand Entry at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday\, Grand Entry will be at 1:00 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. The final weekend dance session will begin with the Grand Entry at 1:00 p.m. \nAs always\, there will be traders and vendors\, including Singing Dove’s kitchen that will serve authentic Native American food such as Indian Tacos and fry bread\, as well as traditional All-American favorites. The tribe has about 2000 members with council headquarters in tribal land on Buckhead. The tribe maintains a community outreach and recreation center on the site and has held its annual Pow Wow there since 1970. The ceremony opens with a traditional march and dance on sacred ground in honor of elders\, fallen heros and community leaders. However\, RV reservations have to be made in advance. \nReenactment of the Battle of San Felasco Hammock\nSaturdday & Sunday @ 2:15 p.m. – Don’t miss the exciting reenactment presented by participating living historians from the various ‘reenactor camps’. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read about the Battle of San Felasco Hammock”]\nOn the 17th of September\, 1836\, a cart laden with corn and attended by three white men and two black men was on the Picolata road returning to the town of Newnansville (now part of Alachua\, FL). They were about a mile from the town when they were fired upon by Seminoles. The 5 men left the cart in the hands of the Seminoles and escaped to Newnansville and reported the event at Fort Gillelaud. \n30 armed men were sent out to assess the situation and heavy rain started to fall. Although they did not find the Seminole warriors\, they did find the cart and were able to return to the fort with it. The Seminoles had attempted to burn it but the rain had extinguished the fire. Military spies were sent during the night to discover the location and strength of the Seminole warriors but they did not find them. \nConvinced that the Seminole Warriors must be hiding in the San Felasco Hammock\, Colonel John Warren marched out at the head of 150 men the following morning\, September 18th\, at 6:00 AM to engage the Seminole warriors. His forces consisted of 100 mounted militia men\, 25 former militia\, and 25 United States regualrs with the fort’s 24 pound cannon. Colonel Warren’s forces advanced in three columns\, the right led by Col. Warrren\, the left by Col. Wills and the center by Capt. Tompkins with the regulars and the howitzer cannon.\nWithin three quarters of a mile of the hammock they were met by the Seminole warriors. The battle immediately commenced along the right wing and center. The Seminole warriors attempted to turn the left flank but the men under Leut. Col. Wills drove them back into the thick oak scrub on the border of the hammock and then dismounted and drove them into the cannon’s line of fire. The Seminole warriors then attempted to flank the right but a charge from Capt. Walker and Lieut Bruten’s forces\, drove the Seminoles once again in front of the howitzer. \nThe Seminoles mortally wounded one of the cannon crew as they twice charged the center attempting to take the howitzer\, but were repelled. The Seminoles eventually retreated into the dense hammock where the would have the advantage because the soldiers could not follow them with the cannon. Instead of following them\, the Colonel’s forces waited to see if the Seminole Warriors would return but when they didn’t\, the Colonel’s forces withdrew without further engagement. \nThe battle lasted an hour and a half with seven whites wounded\, one of them fatally. Five horses were wounded and one horse killed. It was reported that some Seminole warriors had been seen to fall during the battle but Col. Military spies were sent during the night to discover the location and strength of the Seminole warriors but they did not find them. \nConvinced that the Seminole Warriors must be hiding in the San Felasco Hammock\, Colonel John Warren marched out at the head of 150 men the following morning\, September 18th\, at 6:00 AM to engage the Seminole warriors. His forces consisted of 100 mounted militia men\, 25 former militia\, and 25 United States regualrs with the fort’s 24 pound cannon. Colonel Warren’s forces advanced in three columns\, the right led by Col. Warrren\, the left by Col. Wills and the center by Capt. Tompkins with the regulars and the howitzer cannon.\nWithin three quarters of a mile of the hammock they were met by the Seminole warriors. The battle immediately commenced along the right wing and center. The Seminole warriors attempted to turn the left flank but the men under Leut. Col. Wills drove them back into the thick oak scrub on the border of the hammock and then dismounted and drove them into the cannon’s line of fire. The Seminole warriors then attempted to flank the right but a charge from Capt. Walker and Lieut Bruten’s forces\, drove the Seminoles once again in front of the howitzer. \nThe Seminoles mortally wounded one of the cannon crew as they twice charged the center attempting to take the howitzer\, but were repelled. The Seminoles eventually retreated into the dense hammock where the would have the advantage because the soldiers could not follow them with the cannon. Instead of following them\, the Colonel’s forces waited to see if the Seminole Warriors would return but when they didn’t\, the Colonel’s forces withdrew without further engagement. \nThe battle lasted an hour and a half with seven whites wounded\, one of them fatally. Five horses were wounded and one horse killed. It was reported that some Seminole warriors had been seen to fall during the battle but Col. The fur trade was the primary reason for the exploration of the American frontier and this enterprise was spurred on by the demand for pelts which were used to make the very expensive and extremely popular felt hats that were fashionable in Europe from 1550 to 1850. The fur trade began to decline when Europeans began to prefer silk hats and the beaver population began to decline. Although its influence isn’t directly apparent\, the fur trade had a profound effect on the growth of the European influence on North America. Routes trail blazed by fur trappers became the routes followed by the pioneers and fur trading outposts like St. Louis became cities. \nThe Grafton Rendezvous is a great place to either participate in the activities or just to experience some of America’s past firsthand. If you have any questions about anything you see\, just ask one of the reenactors. They have spent much time researching their persona\, and most are happy to share what they know. Gates open at 10 am both days\, with the battles taking place on Saturday at 3pm and Sunday at 2pm as history comes alive in Andersonville\, Georgia.
