Join our re-enactors as they set up tents\, clean their weapons and fire up the blacksmith shop. Climb the circular stairways and experience the harbor view just as the soldiers did in 1861. Walk down our cannon row and touch the actual cannons used to protect this Union stronghold. Tours will be available and public interaction is strongly recommended. Re-enactor participation varies by weekend and weather conditions. \nApril to September\nFrom April to September\, on the third weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each of those months\, Fort Taylor Living History Weekend offers you the opportunity to experience life in the fort as it was during the Civil War. \nLocation\nFort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\n601 Howard England Way\nKey West\, FL 33040 \nMore Information: Kevin Bowes\, kevin.bowes@dep.state.fl.us (305) 292-6850 \nThe park is open from 8:00 a.m. until sundown\, 365 days a year. The fort closes at 5:00 p.m. \nAdmission Fees:\n$6.00* per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle.\n$2.00* Pedestrians\, bicyclists\, extra passengers\, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.\n$4.00* Single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle.\n* Plus $.50 per person Monroe County Surcharge. \nHistory of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park\nSpanish explorers first surveyed the island of Key West in 1513. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They made use of the fort’s impressive artillery\, including 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons to detain blockade-running ships seeking to supply the Confederacy. In 1968\, a large supply of Civil War-era guns and ammunition were discovered in the Fort’s buried arsenal. In fact\, Fort Zachary Taylor held the largest collection of Civil War-era cannons in the United States. \nFort Moat\nSoon after the park opened to the public\, a contractor began the process of digging a moat around the fortress. There were two reasons for the project. One was to prevent easy entry into the structure. The other was to give the illusion of the fort in its early days\, surrounded by water. The end result was an attractive division between the fort and the beach and sea beyond. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Taylor Living History Weekend on the third Saturday and Sunday of each month from March to September at Historic Fort Taylor in Key West\, FL. \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

Civil War soldiers garrison the Fort and fire cannons during the afternoon at the Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School. The event is sponsored by Reynolds Battery 1st New York Light Artillery. \nAlthough Fort Niagara was far from the action during the war\, it nonetheless saw activity during the conflict. Paroled Union soldiers captured near Mesilla\, N.M.\, arrived at the fort in December 1861 and remained there until October 1862. Later\, the fort’s walls were strengthened against a feared British attack from Canada in support of the Confederacy. The fort’s massive brick walls and sturdy underground casemates date from this period. \nThis Old Fort Niagara Civil War Artillery School training weekend\, whether you wear blue or gray the school is dedicated to one simple goal: the training of reenactors in the safe portrayal of their branch. To a lesser degree\, it is the hope that\, in brotherhood\, we can continue to strive to make this hobby enjoyable and accurate to ourselves\, our comrades\, and the public. Except for general formations for colors\, award presentations\, and guest speakers\, the Fort will be garrisoned\, scheduled\, administered\, and certified by staff from their own school. In other words\, the infantry will run the skirmish school\, the artillery will run the artillery school\, and so on. \nLocation\nOld Fort Niagara\n102 Morrow Plaza\n(in Fort Niagara State Park)\nYoungstown\, NY 14174\n(716) 745-7611 \nFor More Information: Call (716) 745-7611 \nAbout Reynolds’ Battery 1st New York Light Artillery\nEach year the Battery attends events throughout New York State and national events in Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, Ohio and Maryland. In recognition of the training provided by the Battery to its members and the Reenactment community the 2012 George MacDonald Award for Outstanding Service was presented to Richard Henderson and John Beatty with Reynolds Battery. \nHistory of Reynolds’ Battery 1861 to 1865\nAfter the disaster at Bull Run\, President Lincoln put out a call for 300\,000 more men for service. The Rochester Union Grays\, a New York Militia regiment at the time\, answered the call. Recruiting was done by John A. Reynolds\, Edwin Loder and Charles Anderson\, and men from Monroe\, Ontario and Wayne counties flocked to the recruiting offices to join the artillery regiment. \nOn October 8\, 1861\, 81 men and officers swore an oath to the Union and were mustered into federal service while stationed in Elmira\, NY. Under the direction of the State of New York\, twelve artillery companies were formed with Reynolds’ Battery given the designation of Company L. They transferred to Albany on November 14\, the training ground for all NY State Artillery\, having reached full strength of 115 men. On November 23\, 1861 Company L reported for duty at Camp Barry\, Washington\, D.C. under the command of Captain John A. Reynolds. John Reynolds used his own personal funds as a guarantee to secured the first six Model 1861 3” Ordnance Rifles from the Phoenix Iron Works. These guns would not arrive until May 1862\, but would bring a great deal of fame for Reynolds’ Battery as being the only battery in US Service to have the first six consecutive guns in any series of any cannon in their battery. On February 23\, 1862\, Reynolds’ Battery was assigned to Baltimore\, Maryland to guard the Capital. After six months of waiting\, they were called into action at Harper’s Ferry. \nAbout Old Fort Niagara\nOld Fort Niagara has dominated the entrance to the Niagara River since 1726. In American hands since 1796\, Fort Niagara was recaptured by the British in 1813\, and then ceded to the US a second time in 1815 at the end of the War of 1812. Today\, visitors can discover an amazing collection of military architecture\, including the oldest building in the Great Lakes region: the “French Castle.” The fort is a New York State and National Historic Landmark and hosts several reenactments each year.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nOld Fort Niagara offers a chance to step back in time to an era when great empires struggled for control of North America. Visit original 18th century buildings\, enjoy incredible views and take part in exciting living history programs. The Fort’s Visitor Center offers you introductory exhibits filled with original artifacts and an award-winning 16-minute orientation film. Don’t miss the Fort’s original War of 1812 Flag. \nInside the Fort\, you’ll tour original buildings where Native American\, French\, British and American soldiers lived and worked from the 18th to the 20th centuries. During the summer months you’ll witness musket and artillery firing demonstrations\, go on a guided tour\, see artisans at work and learn about life on the Niagara Frontier during the 18th and early 19th centuries. \nIf you visit during one of our special events\, you’ll meet reenactors who faithfully recreate the lives of past Fort garrisons and depict the struggles that led to the birth of the United States and Canada. If you visit during the off season\, you’ll enjoy self-guided or audio tours and hourly musket demonstrations in addition to the many exhibits and period rooms throughout the Fort. Why not make plans to visit the Fort today?

Governor Sharpe of Maryland reactivated the fort\, which had ultimately been shut down after the French and Indian War\, and sent arms and militia to garrison it. Seven hundred area settlers flocked to the fort for protection. Although the Indians besieged the new English Fort Pitt\, which stood on Duquesne’s old site\, they never got close to Fort Frederick. Pontiac’s Rebellion was eventually put down\, and Fort Frederick again found itself abandoned. \nPublic Admission: \nAdults – $5.00\nAges 6 to 12 – $2.00\nAges 5 and Under – free\n4-day passes available; contact the Park Visitor Center at 301-842-2155. \nLocation\nFort Frederick State Park\n11100 Fort Frederick Road\nBig Pool\, MD 21711 \nFor more information: call 301-842-2155; email fortfrederick.statepark@maryland.gov \nAbout Fort Frederick\nFort Frederick was one of the largest frontier fortifications built during the French and Indian War. It occupies an area of 1.5 acres\, and it was built to stand up to a major military assault. The fort’s massive stone walls are 4.5 feet thick at the base. Inside the fort\, two large barracks buildings face each other across the parade ground. The fort is open and inside the walls you can tour the two barracks buildings. They are furnished with sleeping quarters\, workshops and offices\, just as they would have been during the mid-18th century. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next “Repair to the Fort: Pontiacs Rebellion” at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool\, Maryland. \nView other Indian Wars Reenactments

Highlighted programming featured throughout the weekend brings to life the surprising American retreat and British capture of Fort Ticonderoga in early July 1777. Experience the fog of war and smoky haze of battle as the American and British armies maneuver across this historic landscape. This two-day battle re-enactment will dramatically show how General Arthur St. Clair decided to evacuate Ticonderoga set the stage for British General John Burgoyne. \nFort Ticonderoga Defiance and Independence takes place Saturday and Sunday\, 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Admission to this re-enactment event is included in a Fort Ticonderoga’s general admission ticket. \n \nA Defining Story Brought to Life: During the Fort Ticonderoga Defiance and Independence reenactment\, visitors will witness the intensity of battle as American soldiers retreat back from their entrenched camp under the intense British drive to capture the fortifications. They will discover the diverse forces that comprised this campaign and meet with soldiers of the two armies including the Royal Artillery\, the Rear Guard\, and the Continental Artillery. \nThis living history event and battle recreation will re-enact a careful chess game between the British Army and an entrenched Continental Army at Ticonderoga. Reprieved from a siege in 1776 by the onset of winter\, Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence faced General John Burgoyne’s northern army of British\, Loyalist\, and German soldiers in July 1777. General St. Clair’s rearguard of Massachusetts and New Hampshire regulars and militia put up a vigorous defense\, skirmishing in the hills and valleys around Ticonderoga. Artillery batteries built into the old French Lines seemed to keep the British army at by. Concealed by forest cover on the back slope of Mount Defiance\, British cannon were dragged to the summit. By July 6\, 1777\, British cannon high up on Mount Defiance\, aimed at the pontoon bridge between the two Forts of Ticonderoga and Independence\, forced the withdrawal of General St. Clair’s rearguard into the Hampshire Grants (Vermont). \n \nWhere a Goat Can Go\, A Man Can Go! Saturday evening at 6:30 pm a gun crew from the Royal Artillery will haul their cannon to the summit of Mount Defiance\, aiming at the Fort located below. Guests can witness the incredible feat and discover the details of this decisive stroke and witness a cannon demonstration in the evening light of the beautiful summit. Advanced tickets are required for this event and must be purchased at Fort Ticonderoga or call 518-585-2821. \nOther Fort Ticonderoga Living History Demonstrations & Reenactments Fort Ticonderoga offers more than one hundred exciting and unique events and programs each season.
