They were about a mile from the town when they were fired upon by Seminoles. The 5 men left the cart in the hands of the Seminoles and escaped to Newnansville and reported the event at Fort Gillelaud. \n30 armed men were sent out to assess the situation and heavy rain started to fall. Although they did not find the Seminole warriors\, they did find the cart and were able to return to the fort with it. The Seminoles had attempted to burn it but the rain had extinguished the fire. Military spies were sent during the night to discover the location and strength of the Seminole warriors but they did not find them. \nConvinced that the Seminole Warriors must be hiding in the San Felasco Hammock\, Colonel John Warren marched out at the head of 150 men the following morning\, September 18th\, at 6:00 AM to engage the Seminole warriors. His forces consisted of 100 mounted militia men\, 25 former militia\, and 25 United States regualrs with the fort’s 24 pound cannon. Colonel Warren’s forces advanced in three columns\, the right led by Col. Warrren\, the left by Col. Wills and the center by Capt. Tompkins with the regulars and the howitzer cannon.\nWithin three quarters of a mile of the hammock they were met by the Seminole warriors. The battle immediately commenced along the right wing and center. The Seminole warriors attempted to turn the left flank but the men under Leut. Col. Wills drove them back into the thick oak scrub on the border of the hammock and then dismounted and drove them into the cannon’s line of fire. The Seminole warriors then attempted to flank the right but a charge from Capt. Walker and Lieut Bruten’s forces\, drove the Seminoles once again in front of the howitzer. \nThe Seminoles mortally wounded one of the cannon crew as they twice charged the center attempting to take the howitzer\, but were repelled. The Seminoles eventually retreated into the dense hammock where the would have the advantage because the soldiers could not follow them with the cannon. Instead of following them\, the Colonel’s forces waited to see if the Seminole Warriors would return but when they didn’t\, the Colonel’s forces withdrew without further engagement. \nThe battle lasted an hour and a half with seven whites wounded\, one of them fatally. Five horses were wounded and one horse killed. It was reported that some Seminole warriors had been seen to fall during the battle but Col. Warren’s forces were unable to verify any Seminole losses. \nOn the 17th of September\, 1836\, a cart laden with corn and attended by three white men and two black men was on the Picolata road returning to the town of Newnansville (now part of Alachua\, FL). The fur trade was the primary reason for the exploration of the American frontier and this enterprise was spurred on by the demand for pelts which were used to make the very expensive and extremely popular felt hats that were fashionable in Europe from 1550 to 1850. The fur trade began to decline when Europeans began to prefer silk hats and the beaver population began to decline. Although its influence isn’t directly apparent\, the fur trade had a profound effect on the growth of the European influence on North America. Routes trail blazed by fur trappers became the routes followed by the pioneers and fur trading outposts like St. Louis became cities. \nThe Grafton Rendezvous is a great place to either participate in the activities or just to experience some of America’s past firsthand. If you have any questions about anything you see\, just ask one of the reenactors. They have spent much time researching their persona\, and most are happy to share what they know. The Grafton Rendezvous is located on the Grafton waterfront at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Parking is plentiful and downtown Grafton is an easy walk from the site. \nGrafton Rendezvous Mini-Gallery\n\n \nPublic Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nCamping\nPre-1840 dress and camp required for the primitive area\nEarly setup on Wednesday\nNo camp fee or fee for demonstrators\nModern camping area separate\nFirewood\, Water\, Porta Potties and Trash Disposal will be provided \nTrader and Sutler Information\nTrade fees will apply: Blankets $10\, Food Vendors $50\, and Tent Traders $25\nBlanket Prize Entry: $15 value will be judged \nFor more information contact:\nCall Cindy Grizzle: 618-372-8672 or Ralph & Mary Mosby 618-258-7970\nEmail graftonrendezvous@gmail.com \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Grafton Rendezvous in Grafton\, IL on the third weekend of October on the banks of the Illinois River. \nTags: Grafton Rendezvous\, Grafton Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Illinois Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Illinois Rendezvous \nView other Illinois Rendezvous

Walk in Lincoln’s footsteps as you visit the Rockport Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum. Tour thirteen replica cabins representing the time Lincoln spent his formative years in Spencer County Indiana. Also enjoy viewing fascinating artifacts in the museum such as the original hutch thought to be made by Lincoln with the help of his father Thomas\, a “Breetches” bible dated 1598\, a rare “Beater Rocker Loom” where only 66 are known to exist along with many other treasures. \n\nRockport Lincoln Pioneer Village Fall Heritage Days\nThe weekend will feature chances to revisit a more rugged time through exploration of cabins representative of those used by Lincoln’s friends and neighbors. One such cabin is still coming together after making the journey from Falls of Rough\, Kentucky\, as part of a nine-year replacement project. Other than relocating the logs\, the rebuild has been a project undertaken by community members. \nThroughout the weekend the grounds of the Rockport Lincoln Pioneer Village Fall Heritage Days will also host campers dressed in period clothing and using traditional 19th century equipment\, Unfried said. Anyone interested in joining the historical period camp can contact her at 812-431-7549 or the museum at 812-649-9147 for more information. \nAdmission:\n$5 for Adults $3 for seniors & children under 12 \nHours:\nSAT-SUN 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. \nLocation:\nRockport Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum\n928 Fairground Dr\nRockport\, IN 47635 \nFor More Information: Nancy Kaiser 812-649-9147 \nAbout the Lincoln Pioneer Village\nOne of southern Indiana’s true gems of living history. The Lincoln Pioneer Village is a historic memorial to Lincoln that visualizes the Spencer County environment in which Lincoln lived during the 14 formative years of his life\, from 1816 to 1830. \n \nWalk through cabins depicting life 200 years ago as Lincoln would have lived it. Visit the museum on the grounds with displays of military artifacts\, clothing\, utensils\, spinning wheels and a rare rocker beater loom still in use today.
