Join us to celebrate the mountain men\, legendary explorers\, and Native Americans who opened commerce in the American West. Over the course of the four days of the Green River Rendezvous\, vendors will fill parks with food\, live music\, beer\, entertainment and more to celebrate the mountain men\, legendary explorers\, and Native Americans who opened commerce in the American West. From visits to the Museum of the Mountain Man that bestows Jim Bridger’s rifle to the return of the “Green River Rendezvous” historical re-enactment and nightly rodeos\, cultural events will be in high supply. \n\nGreen River Rendezvous\nGreen River Rendezvous History\nSixteen Rendezvous were held during the years 1824-1840\, the height of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade when the beaver top hat was an essential part of every respectable urban man’s wardrobe. Of those 16 gatherings\, six were located at the Green River Rendezvous site\, eight miles west of Pinedale near Daniel\, Wyoming. It was at this site where famous mountain men like Jim Bridger\, Kit Carson\, Thomas Fitzpatrick carved their legends and opened the way for settlement of the West and supplied lustrous beaver pelts for the fashion industries of Europe and the eastern United States. Trappers\, travelers and Native American Indians all gathered to barter\, sell and gamble away the pelts and skins they’d gathered through the winter from hard\, dangerous labor. Guns\, jewelry\, supplies and other trade goods were also swapped. These original Rendezvous were the best opportunity to lay in supplies for the coming winter\, renew acquaintances\, tell tall tales\, drink\, laugh and get rowdy. \nGreen River Rendezvous Pageant\nSunday\, 1:00 pm at the Pinedale Rodeo Grounds\nThe live\, historical re-enactment has been a Pinedale area tradition since 1936 where community residents relive the original Green River Rendezvous of the 1800s. The rodeo grounds come alive with bearded\, buck skinned trappers and mountain men of long ago as they gallop\, holler\, fight\, boast\, and trade and barter goods. Representatives of coming civilization are also on the scene: Eliza Spaulding and Narcissa Whitman\, the first pioneer women to travel over South Pass\, stroll in once again. \nAmerican Mountain Man & Plains Indian Encampment\nThursday – Sunday at the Museum of the Mountain Man\nActivities\, tours\, and campfire talks on the historical significance of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade provides entertaining and educational Rendezvous events for all ages\, including free living history demonstrations of fur trapper and Plains Indian lifestyles\, field trips\, and children’s activities. \nPrairie of the Mass\nSunday\, 10:00 am at De Smet Monument\, Daniel\, Wyoming\nThe influence of Belgium-born Jesuit missionary\, Father De Smet is realized at morning’s calm to celebrate the first ever Mass on the prairie near the original Rendezvous site on July 5\, 1840 where thousands of Indians\, trappers and fur traders gathered. The De Smet Monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 28\, 1970. \nOriginal Green River Rendezvous Site\nTravel four miles north of Pinedale on US Highway 191\, turn left on Green River Road\, enter in at sign on right side of the road\, drive up a bit\, and walk on up. \nBy far\, the site of the 1833\, 1835\, 1836\, 1837\, 1839\, 1840 rendezvous is one of Pinedale’s most commanding scenes and was declared a U.S. National Historical Landmark in 1961. It’s no wonder six of the sixteen Rocky Mountain Rendezvous were located right here in the Upper Green River Valley where Horse Creek meets the Green. \nTrader’s Row\nLocated on the east end of Pine Street/US Highway 191. \n \nBuy and sell goods Thursday through Saturday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. It will have lots of rendezvous fun with activities such as the Candy Canon blasting throughout the day\, a bow shoot for all ages\, a frying pan toss\, and a “Tell a Tall Tale” contest. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Green River Rendezvous at the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale\, Wyoming. \nTags: Green River Rendezvous\, Green River Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Wyoming Rendezvous\, Wyoming Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Wyoming Rendezvous

In Dakota language\, the word “Wacipi” literally means “they dance.” Often held over a weekend\, a Powwow is filled with songs and dances\, singers with drums\, and dancers in their regalia. Regalia (pronounced Re gail ya) is the proper term used to describe the highly decorated clothing worn by the powwow dancers. \nThe Prairie Island Summer Pow Wow\, Prairie Island Indian Community and Pow Wow Committee are not responsible for lack of funds. It is also a chance for our non-Indian friends and families to take part in inter-tribal dancing as a Powwow is considered a cultural sharing event for all to learn about Native Americans and share ideas and information. \nThe circle is an important symbol to Indian cultures because it symbolizes the continuation of life. To the Native American people\, life is never ending\, like the circle. The Powwow brings the circle of the people closer together – closer to their community and their culture. Powwows today are still very much a part of the lives of modern Indian people. The Powwow season runs from March to September or later. Competiive singing and dancing for prize money is a fairly recent change in the traditiona Powwows. Only registered contestants can participate in the dancing contests.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Kahnawake Pow Wow at the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory only 10 miles south of Montreal\, Canada on the second weekend of July. \nTags: Kahnawake Pow Wow\, Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow Wow\, Kahnawake Powwow\, Echoes of a Proud Nation Powwow\, Kahnawake Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow Wow\, Montreal Powwow\, Montreal Pow Wow\, Canada Pow Wow\, Canada Powwow \nView other Canada Powwows

Captain Christian Huck was a Loyalist officer noted for his “particular dislike for the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in the South Carolina backcountry or ‘rebels’ as the British called them.” James Williamson’s 18th-century plantation is part of the 775-acres that comprises Historic Brattonsville. \nCaptain Christian Huck and his Loyalist troops were soundly defeated in the early morning hours of July 12\, 1780\, in a battle that took place at the home of William Bratton’s neighbor\, James Williamson. This victory inspired confidence for backcountry Patriots and began to turn the tide for success in winning Independence from King George. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t forget the next Battle of Hucks Defeat Reenactment in July at Historic Brattonsville in McConnells\, South Carolina. \nTags: Battle of Hucks Defeat Reenactment\, Hucks Defeat Reenactment\, Revolutionary War Reenactment\, South Carolina Revolutionary War Reenactment \n \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments\, Musters\, Encampments & Other Events

During their voyage of 1804 – 1806\, they led the “Corps of Northwestern Discovery” overland from St. Louis to the mouth of the Columbia River\, and back again. With no means for resupply\, the Corps – a U.S. Army unit of 31 men\, accompanied by Sacagawea and her infant child\, Jean Baptiste – needed to use a diverse combination of skills\, along with the right tools\, in order to survive. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Lewis and Clark Living History at Knappton Cove in July in Naselle\, Washington. \n \nTags: Lewis and Clark Living History at Knappton Cove\, Lewis and Clark Living History\, Knappton Cove Heritage Center\, Washington Living History\, Washington Rendezvous \nView other Washington Rendezvous & Other Related Living History Events\nView Other Living History Events

The Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous is a celebration of life on the western frontier during the early 1840s\, patterned after the fur-trade rendezvous of that time. Many people spend a great deal of time\, effort and money to have suitable pre-1840 clothing and gear\, and travel many miles to enjoy the atmosphere of a “Living History” pre-1840 rendezvous. Please do not spoil it for them. \nThis year’s Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous to be at approximately 9\,300 feet\, so for those of you who have difficulty with altitude\, you might want to check online to see if there is anything you can do to be more comfortable before and when you get there. Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow is a three day celebration of traditional Native American culture – a place and time where local people can observe and learn about that culture and a bridge of friendship between the former and present inhabitants of the Wallowa County. For three days\, experience traditional Native American songs\, dances and spectacular traditional regalia. Outside the dance arena\, dozens of concessionaires will sell food\, Native American crafts and other items. \n\nNez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow & Friendship Potluck\nAlong the river\, participants camp during the pow wow\, many setting up teepees. The sight of teepees along the river after many years’ absence is wonderful. On the last day of the festival there is a friendship feast. The Native American community provides salmon\, deer and elk\, with locals bringing pot luck dishes. For the deer and elk\, a group of Indians come early and exercise their treaty rights by hunting for the game for the feast. It was decided that a friendship potluck and powwow would be the most appropriate event. Since that time\, a group of ten to fifteen local volunteers have met\, planned\, and worked nearly year-round to conduct the event. During the powwow and potluck\, about forty to fifty local people and ten to twelve Native Americans help in putting it on. \n\nIn its first year\, 1990\, the Celebration Powwow was held in the high school gym and the potluck on the school grounds with about fifty participants. By the third year it had to be moved to a five acre site and set up our powwow and feast outside because it had grown too large for the gym. In 1998 the Wallowa Band Nez Perce Pow Wow and Friendship Potluck was renamed Tamkaliks (from where you can see the mountains) and moved to the new Wallowa Band Nez Perce Trail Interpretive Center prospective site at the edge of the city of Wallowa.\nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Nez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow & Friendship Potluck\, always the third weekend in July at the Tamkaliks Powwow Ground in Wallowa\, Oregon. \nTags: Tamkaliks Celebration & Friendship Potluck\, Tamkaliks Celebration Powwow\, Tamkaliks Celebration Pow Wow\, Tamkaliks Celebration\, Tamkaliks Powwow\, Tamkaliks Pow Wow\, Oregon Powwow\, Oregon Pow Wow\, Nez Perce Tamkaliks Celebration \nView Other Oregon Pow Wows & Other Native American Events

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Community hosts the Traditional Mdewakanton Wacipi (Flandreau Pow Wow) every July on third weekend (Friday – Sunday). The Flandreau Pow Wow begins with the Grand Entry of all the dancers entering the arena\, led by the flag bearers. \n\nFlandreau Pow Wow (Wacipi)\nA Pow Wow (Wacipi in Dakota language) was originally a spring event to celebrate the seasonal renewal of life. People would congregate to sing\, dance\, renew old friendships and form new ones. Pow wows had religious significance as an opportunity for families to hold naming and honoring ceremonies. The term pow wow is traced by some to the Algonquin language and is thought to have been used by non-Indians to mean\, in general a council or meeting. \nToday\, pow wows are still very much a part of the lives of many Native Americans around the country. While some pow wows begin as early as March\, the pow wow season runs from June until September. Pow wows are held every weekend\, often at several locations during peak periods. Many families pack up and “go on the circuit\,” camping out and enjoying the traditional celebration activities of singing\, dancing and seeing old friends not seen since the previous season. Whether you are “on the circuit\,” or just visiting to see what the excitement is all about\, you are sure to enjoy your time at the Flandreau Pow Wow. \nPow Wow Details\nFree Admission / Session Pay Out\n1st 20 Drums Guaranteed Drum Split\nMeals – Provided Friday and Saturday \nGrand Entry: \nFriday: 7:00 pm\nSaturday: 1:00 pm & 7:00 pm\nSunday: 1:00 pm \nRegistration Opens: Friday 3:00 pm; Saturday 9:00 am\nFlag Raising: Friday 9:00 am; Saturday 9:00 am; Sunday 9:00 am \nFlandreau Pow Wow Mini Gallery\n\n \nPowwow Head Staff\nEyapaha: To Be Announced\nArena Director: To Be Announced\nHost Drum: To Be Announced\nColor Guard: To be announced\nMeals – provided Saturday and Sunday\nPrincess Contest: To Be Announced \nFlandreau Pow Wow (Wacipi) Location:\nFlandreau Wacipi Grounds\nNorth of Flandreau off Highway 13\nFlandreau\, SD \nHost Hotel: Royal River Casino\, 877-912-LUCK; ask for Powwow Rate. \nFor more information: \nEmail: flandreauwacipi@fsst.org\nPhone: Mike Wakeman Phone: 605-530-0236\nVendor Information: Mike Wakeman 605-530-0236 \nThe Flandreau Powwow is a family friendly event. The Deep River Ancient Muster is the oldest and largest gathering of fife and drum participants and enthusiasts in the world and has been referred to as “The Granddaddy of All Musters”\, and “A Colonial Woodstock”. \n\nDeep River Ancient Muster\nUp to 80 fife and drum corp groups dressed in historical attire converge each July on the third Saturday at Deep River. They parade along Main Street\, passing historic homes and buildings while performing some of the same music that provided the cadence for troops marching into battle during the Revolutionary War\, the Civil War and other early American military engagements. \n“It’s (the Deep River Ancient Muster) become the main gathering place for people in fife and drums\,” says Clark\, a music professor at the University of New Haven (Conn.)\, who has attended every Deep River muster since 1964. “People plan their year around it.”[1] \nAlthough the Deep River Ancient Muster is a competition between the groups\, there is a lot of camaraderie between members of the different fife and drum corps. They share in the experience\, music\, heritage and tradition of fife and drum. \nAt the parade’s end\, the ife and drum corp groups make their way to the baseball diamond at Devitt’s Field and line up in a colorful display of band uniforms from early Colonial days to the 1890s. Each group performs a medley of favorite songs\, including Revolutionary War standards such as “York Fusiliers” and “Chester\,” and Civil War tunes such as “The Girl I Left Behind” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” \nVarious awards are presented at the Deep River Ancient Muster for “non-competitive” categories as group traveling the farthest and the group with the most marching participants. \nMuster Date: The Deep River Ancient Muster is always the 3rd Saturday in July \nTatoo: Friday starting at 7:00 pm at Devitt’s Field \nHost Corps: Deep River Junior Ancients \nPARTICIPANT’S NOTE: You MUST read and accept the DRAM Guidelines and Information page before going to the Muster Registration pages. \nOn-line muster registration: Access to on-line registration is at the end of the DRAM Guidelines detail page\, and will end on JULY 1. Registrations after that date will be accepted at the muster field on Friday\, before 8:00 pm. \nParade: Saturday starting at 11:00 am. The Deep River Ancient Muster parade starts at the corner of Main and Kirtland Streets and proceeds down Main Street to Devitt’s Field. \nHost Corp: Deep River Ancient Muster Committee and the Deep River Drum Corps \nDeep River Ancient Muster: Starts immediately following the parade at Devitt’s Field. Roads close at 10:30 am. Parking in several locations along Main Street\, Deep River Congregational Church\, The Stone House\, Deep River Hardware\, Deep River Public Library and Route 80. \nCurrent Year Participating Groups: View list of fife and drum corps currently signed up to attend the Deep River Ancient Muster. \nLocations\nTatoo & Muster\nDevitt Field\n15 Southworth Street\n(Corner Main Street & Southworth Street)\nDeep River\, CT 06417 \nParade\nMain & Kirtland Streets\nDeep River\, CT 06417 \nFor more information: drancientmuster@gmail.com \nEchoes of history\nMost of the music played at the Deep River Ancient Muster dates to the Revolutionary War and has been performed in the same style generation after generation. It’s important for all drum corps to retain their distinctive sound and to carry their traditions forward. Unlike contemporary music that is often “interpreted” by performers\, the music of the eras played by these groups is history\, and as such is played in its original composition. \nDuring the early Colonial era\, America’s fife and drum music grew out of necessity to communicate across distances of up to five miles. Before foundries were established that could cast church bells\, town drummers notified citizens of public events. \nThroughout the Revolutionary and Civil wars\, percussion instruments were used to tell troops when to wake\, eat\, work\, sleep or be on alert. By the Civil War\, young boys were recruited for the task of playing music for foot soldiers to break up the monotony of long marches and to inform troops when to assemble\, charge\, retreat or cease-fire. During the same period\, cavalries introduced a brass horn to the music of war. \nAfter the Civil War ends\, the bugle takes the place of fife and drum for military purposes\, and the fife and drum become a recreational and nostalgic part of music. \n \nMustering a Tradition: About the Deep River Ancient Muster\nThe Deep River Ancient Muster traces its roots to May 13\, 1879\, when five area fife and drum corps participated in a “field day” at Devitt’s Field in Deep River. \n“They were competitive events\, though they weren’t very competitive. It was really an excuse to get together and play music\,” says Clark\, a founding member of the Connecticut Valley Field Music\, a fife and drum band based in Middletown\, Conn.[1] \nFor the next seven decades\, more field days occurred periodically until September 5\, 1953\, when 15 corps from Connecticut\, Massachusetts\, Maryland\, New York and Washington\, D.C.\, gathered for the first muster in Deep River\, which featured a one-mile parade through town and later included a series of short musical performances—called a “tattoo”—at Devitt’s Field. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Deep River Ancient Muster on the third Saturday in July at Devitt Field in Deep River\, CT. \nTags: Deep River Ancient Muster\, Fife & Drum Corps Muster\, DRAM \nView other Drum & Fife Corps Events\n[1] Americana: Fife & Drum Corps\, American Profile\, by Caryn B. Behind them stood the Marquis de Montcalm\, a general used to doing the impossible in Canada and the mountains of Italy. With woolen vestes packed away\, wearing the white coats of France\, each French soldier double-checked his stockpile of loaded muskets and hoped for a miracle to defend New France from a British onslaught. Sweat beading up on their brows\, they looked over tangled branches and a forest of mere stumps. With piercing eyes they looked over the top of the stacked logs and began to see blazing musket fire explode as the largest single day of battle yet in the history of North America began. \nThree days prior\, the largest military force ever assembled in North America embarked by bateaux down Lake George\, leaving the ruins of Fort William Henry to invade New France from the south. At Fort Carillon\, 3\,700 French soldiers\, Canadian milice\, and native warriors stood to defend French soil in the New World. Abercromby’s army of British and Provincial soldiers landed at the north end of Lake George\, after a long night packed into the fleet of bateaux. Sweeping through the La Chute valley\, Brigadier General Lord Augustus Howe and the advanced guard encountered a lost patrol of French soldiers. In the ensuing confusing battle Lord Howe was shot through the chest\, and killed on the spot. The death of this leader\, known as the darling of the army\, struck a blow to British morale and tactical command. \n \nIn spite of Lord Howe’s death\, British and Provincial soldiers dug in along the La Chute River and General Abercromby prepared to assault the Heights of Carillon. Abercromby’s intelligence led him to believe that the Marquis de Montcalm’s soldiers had prepared merely a defensive abatis\, which could easily be taken. Early in the morning of July 8th\, General Abercromby moved regulars\, provincials\, and rangers into position to attack the Heights of Carillon. By this plan\, three columns of British and provincial soldiers would attack three sides of the French lines in unison. Instead\, individual regiments rushed forward\, dissipating their immense numerical advantage. What was supposed to be a well-coordinated attack soon fell apart. The French kept up a consistent fire on the attacking force\, pinning many of the British soldiers down\, forcing them to hide behind stumps of trees and the bodies of their fallen comrades. David Perry\, a Massachusetts provincial soldier\, described his perilous situation that July day. \nIt happened that I got behind a white-oak stump\, which was so small that I had to lay on my side\, and stretch myself; the balls striking the ground within a hand’s breadth of me every moment\, and I could hear the men screaming\, and see them dying all around me. I lay there some time. A man could not stand erect\, without being hit\, any more than he could stand out in a shower\, without having drops of rain fall upon him; for the balls came by hands-full. \nBritish Defeat and Retreat\nThe outcome looked grim for the few attackers who made it to the abatis. Rushing over the bare no-mans-land\, they attempted to cut and force their way through the sharp entangled branches\, facing clouds of lead bullets. After seven hours of fighting\, the battlefield was littered with the dead and dying\, and with dusk encompassing the battlefield a disorganized retreat south ensued for the British and provincial soldiers. The retreating soldiers brought with them the story of this great battle\, taking the name Ticonderoga home to taverns and newspapers in America and Britain. \nThis fight for the Heights of Carillon at that time was the single most-bloody day in American history\, and gave Fort Carillon a formidable reputation. Having held the French Lines for one day\, French soldiers continued to dig in\, preparing for a second day’s attack. Their somber celebration for the day’s victory was a single cross raised high behind the French Lines. The Marquis de Montcalm ordered this cross raised as thanks for their miraculous victory\, even as they prayed for another such miracle. News of this miraculous victory reached France by the fall of that year. On October 1st\, 1758 the French army staged a reenactment of the battle\, to accompany fireworks to celebrate in front of Paris city hall. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next 1758 Montcalms Cross Battle of Carillon Reenactment in July at historic Fort Ticonderoga! \nTags: Montcalms Cross Battle of Carillon Reenactment at Fort Ticonderoga\, French & Indian War Reenactment\, Montcalms Cross Battle of Carillon Reenactment\, 1758 Battle of Carillon Reenactment\, Battle of Carillon Reenactment \nView other French & Indian War Reenactments and Other Events\nFort Ticonderoga Special Events\, History & Living History Daily Demonstrations

Wiconi’s primary mission is to empower and serve Native people to experience a desired quality of life and a hope-filled future through authentic relationships and culturally supportive programs. \nAbout Aldersgate Conference Grounds Nestled among 38 forested acres in the heart of Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley\, Aldersgate Conference Grounds\, the venue of the annual Wiconi Living Waters Pow Wow\, beckons to churches\, schools\, state agencies\, and non-profit organizations such as Wiconi International with comfortable\, affordable facilities. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Wiconi Living Waters Pow Wow on the last Saturday of July at the Aldersgate Conference Grounds in Turner\, Oregon. \nTags: Wiconi Living Waters Pow Wow\, Richard Twiss Memorial Traditional Powwow\, Wiconi Living Waters Powwow\, Richard Twiss Memorial Traditional Pow wow\,Richard Twiss Memorial Powwow\, Richard Twiss Memorial Powwow\, Oregon Powwow\, Oregon Pow Wow \nView Other Oregon Pow Wows
