There are many arts and crafts and food vendors that set up at the Taos Pueblo Pow Wow. Sterling silver jewelry\, beadwork\, shawls\, paintings\, and the like will be for sale at the numerous booths that encircle the pow wow grounds. It was decided that a friendship potluck and powwow would be the most appropriate event. Since that time\, a group of ten to fifteen local volunteers have met\, planned\, and worked nearly year-round to conduct the event. During the powwow and potluck\, about forty to fifty local people and ten to twelve Native Americans help in putting it on. \n\nIn its first year\, 1990\, the Celebration Powwow was held in the high school gym and the potluck on the school grounds with about fifty participants. By the third year it had to be moved to a five acre site and set up our powwow and feast outside because it had grown too large for the gym. The Deep River Ancient Muster is the oldest and largest gathering of fife and drum participants and enthusiasts in the world and has been referred to as “The Granddaddy of All Musters”\, and “A Colonial Woodstock”. \n\nDeep River Ancient Muster\nUp to 80 fife and drum corp groups dressed in historical attire converge each July on the third Saturday at Deep River. They parade along Main Street\, passing historic homes and buildings while performing some of the same music that provided the cadence for troops marching into battle during the Revolutionary War\, the Civil War and other early American military engagements. \n“It’s (the Deep River Ancient Muster) become the main gathering place for people in fife and drums\,” says Clark\, a music professor at the University of New Haven (Conn.)\, who has attended every Deep River muster since 1964. “People plan their year around it.”[1] \nAlthough the Deep River Ancient Muster is a competition between the groups\, there is a lot of camaraderie between members of the different fife and drum corps. It’s important for all drum corps to retain their distinctive sound and to carry their traditions forward. Unlike contemporary music that is often “interpreted” by performers\, the music of the eras played by these groups is history\, and as such is played in its original composition. \nDuring the early Colonial era\, America’s fife and drum music grew out of necessity to communicate across distances of up to five miles. Before foundries were established that could cast church bells\, town drummers notified citizens of public events. \nThroughout the Revolutionary and Civil wars\, percussion instruments were used to tell troops when to wake\, eat\, work\, sleep or be on alert. By the Civil War\, young boys were recruited for the task of playing music for foot soldiers to break up the monotony of long marches and to inform troops when to assemble\, charge\, retreat or cease-fire. During the same period\, cavalries introduced a brass horn to the music of war. \nAfter the Civil War ends\, the bugle takes the place of fife and drum for military purposes\, and the fife and drum become a recreational and nostalgic part of music. \n \nMustering a Tradition: About the Deep River Ancient Muster\nThe Deep River Ancient Muster traces its roots to May 13\, 1879\, when five area fife and drum corps participated in a “field day” at Devitt’s Field in Deep River. \n“They were competitive events\, though they weren’t very competitive. Behind them stood the Marquis de Montcalm\, a general used to doing the impossible in Canada and the mountains of Italy. With woolen vestes packed away\, wearing the white coats of France\, each French soldier double-checked his stockpile of loaded muskets and hoped for a miracle to defend New France from a British onslaught. Sweat beading up on their brows\, they looked over tangled branches and a forest of mere stumps. With piercing eyes they looked over the top of the stacked logs and began to see blazing musket fire explode as the largest single day of battle yet in the history of North America began. \nThree days prior\, the largest military force ever assembled in North America embarked by bateaux down Lake George\, leaving the ruins of Fort William Henry to invade New France from the south. At Fort Carillon\, 3\,700 French soldiers\, Canadian milice\, and native warriors stood to defend French soil in the New World. Abercromby’s army of British and Provincial soldiers landed at the north end of Lake George\, after a long night packed into the fleet of bateaux. Sweeping through the La Chute valley\, Brigadier General Lord Augustus Howe and the advanced guard encountered a lost patrol of French soldiers. In the ensuing confusing battle Lord Howe was shot through the chest\, and killed on the spot. The death of this leader\, known as the darling of the army\, struck a blow to British morale and tactical command. \n \nIn spite of Lord Howe’s death\, British and Provincial soldiers dug in along the La Chute River and General Abercromby prepared to assault the Heights of Carillon. Abercromby’s intelligence led him to believe that the Marquis de Montcalm’s soldiers had prepared merely a defensive abatis\, which could easily be taken. Early in the morning of July 8th\, General Abercromby moved regulars\, provincials\, and rangers into position to attack the Heights of Carillon. By this plan\, three columns of British and provincial soldiers would attack three sides of the French lines in unison. Instead\, individual regiments rushed forward\, dissipating their immense numerical advantage. What was supposed to be a well-coordinated attack soon fell apart. The French kept up a consistent fire on the attacking force\, pinning many of the British soldiers down\, forcing them to hide behind stumps of trees and the bodies of their fallen comrades. David Perry\, a Massachusetts provincial soldier\, described his perilous situation that July day. \nIt happened that I got behind a white-oak stump\, which was so small that I had to lay on my side\, and stretch myself; the balls striking the ground within a hand’s breadth of me every moment\, and I could hear the men screaming\, and see them dying all around me. I lay there some time. A man could not stand erect\, without being hit\, any more than he could stand out in a shower\, without having drops of rain fall upon him; for the balls came by hands-full. \nBritish Defeat and Retreat\nThe outcome looked grim for the few attackers who made it to the abatis. Rushing over the bare no-mans-land\, they attempted to cut and force their way through the sharp entangled branches\, facing clouds of lead bullets. After seven hours of fighting\, the battlefield was littered with the dead and dying\, and with dusk encompassing the battlefield a disorganized retreat south ensued for the British and provincial soldiers. The retreating soldiers brought with them the story of this great battle\, taking the name Ticonderoga home to taverns and newspapers in America and Britain. \nThis fight for the Heights of Carillon at that time was the single most-bloody day in American history\, and gave Fort Carillon a formidable reputation. Having held the French Lines for one day\, French soldiers continued to dig in\, preparing for a second day’s attack. Their somber celebration for the day’s victory was a single cross raised high behind the French Lines. The Marquis de Montcalm ordered this cross raised as thanks for their miraculous victory\, even as they prayed for another such miracle. News of this miraculous victory reached France by the fall of that year. When the North West Company first arrived\, they built a trading post where the Indian population and the French explorers bartered for furs\, primarily beaver fur which was incredibly cherished among the European market. Fur traders traveled hundreds of miles and portaged in every direction anticipating the rendezvous\, also known as a meeting place where trading and bartering took place. After furs and other products\, were traded\, the furs were then carried along the Yellow River onto Montreal and then eventually to Europe. At the end of the 1805 trading season\, the fur traders loaded their canoes\, traveled along the Yellow River and never returned to Fort Folle Avoine. Chief Little Priest\, who had been wounded in battle\, died later in September. \nThe Winnebago celebration began in July of 1886 when Grey Wolf\, Chief Little Priest’s brother\, held a celebration of his brother’s life and notable achievements. The Fort Totten Days Powwow is free and open to everyone to come\, watch and enjoy. There may be a fee charged to enter the rodeo grounds to watch\, however. You’ll want to bring some cash because there are numerous food booths and craft stands around the grounds so you can bring home something to remember the event by. \n\nFort Totten Days Powwow – Spirit Lake Wacipi Oyate\nThe opening ceremonies begin with Grand Entry at 7 p.m. on Friday\, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday\, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. During the Grand Entry the Eagle Staff\, elders\, spiritual leaders and veterans lead the entire slate of dancers into the arena for opening prayers and honor songs. Then the dancing begins. \nFort Totten Days Powwow is a contest powwow where dancers are judged by their participation and dance skills. Those with the highest numbers win some nice purses.
