The Shuswap Indian Band and Akisqnuk used to organize separate (events)\, but now organize one jointly. \nThe day will begin with a fund raiser breakfast between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m.\, the grand entry will start with flags followed by the opening prayer. There will be children’s activities\, drumming\, dancing and storytelling about traditional legends between noon and 3:30 p.m. when the closing ceremony will begin. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947. Today\, the fort is a National Historic Landmark containing the largest cache of Civil War-era seacoast cannons in the U.S. \nCannon and Arches\nUnion troops took control of Fort Zachary Taylor early in the Civil War and maintained it through the duration of the war. They will discover the diverse forces that comprised this campaign and meet with soldiers of the two armies including the Royal Artillery\, the Rear Guard\, and the Continental Artillery. \nThis living history event and battle recreation will re-enact a careful chess game between the British Army and an entrenched Continental Army at Ticonderoga. Reprieved from a siege in 1776 by the onset of winter\, Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence faced General John Burgoyne’s northern army of British\, Loyalist\, and German soldiers in July 1777. General St. Clair’s rearguard of Massachusetts and New Hampshire regulars and militia put up a vigorous defense\, skirmishing in the hills and valleys around Ticonderoga. Artillery batteries built into the old French Lines seemed to keep the British army at by. Concealed by forest cover on the back slope of Mount Defiance\, British cannon were dragged to the summit. Have you ever been to one of those festivals where reenactors portray life in the American colonies or in Native American settlements? Ever wondered how you could become one of them\, how you could find your persona and bring it back to life\, live the old way\, wear the clothes you have admired in books\, cook over an open fire\, sleep under the stars\, and of course\, share your love of history and be a constant presence at rendezvous – the only way to understand what the word means is by attending the Beginners Living History Rendezvous. This is the perfect opportunity to learn all this and much more: different Native American lodging styles\, cooking techniques and utensils in the Native American camp vs. pioneer camp\, Native American style beadwork\, hand sewing\, finger weaving\, basketry\, buckskinning\, flintknapping\, blacksmithing\, butter churning\, soap making\, entertainment and much\, much more. \n \nReenactors will be demonstrating all day in their camps set up on the property. Traders will have their trade blankets ready for you to buy the gear you need to start up reenacting history. The Corps consists of four units: the Field Music; Knowlton’s Connecticut Rangers; Capt. Stephen Buckland’s Artillery; and the Company of Artificers. The musicians are attired in the regimental uniform of Col. Charles Webb’s 19th Connecticut Regiment of Foot in which unit Capt. Nathan Hale served in 1776. Their commitment to authenticity has resulted in their having won the coveted recognition from the Company of Military Historians. Fife and Drum Corps gained increased popularity during the American bicentennial celebrations. In 18th-century military life\, fifes and drums served as one of the primary modes of battlefield communication and camp regulation. \n \nHistory of the Fort Ticonderoga Fife and Drum Corps Fort Ticonderoga formed its first Fife and Drum Corps in 1926 on the eve of the 150th anniversary celebrations of American Independence. The Corps performed at the Fort each summer until the beginning of World War II. When the World’s Fair came to New York City in 1939\, the Fife and Drum Corps was a featured performer on May 10th\, Fort Ticonderoga Day celebrating the 164th anniversary of the capture of the Fort by Ethan Allen\, Benedict Arnold and the Green Mountain Boys. \nIn 1973\, in preparation for the bicentennial\, Fort Ticonderoga revived the Fife and Drum Corps to perform daily during the museum campus’ summer season. Following the Indian attack on Bryans Station near Lexington\, 182 members of the Kentucky militia set out to follow the raiders But the Indians and their British allies were waiting to ambush the oncoming Kentuckians. Seventy of Kentucky’s earliest settlers died and were buried on this spot. \nAt the Battle of Blue Licks Reenactment Weekend\, you willl step back in time and witness the last battle of the Revolutionary War fought in Kentucky. Stroll through the pioneer encampment and see how pioneers lived over 200 years ago. History is brought to life through hands on demonstrations\, live music\, and other 18th century programs that take place throughout this very special weekend.
