SUMMARY:Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment
DESCRIPTION:2019 Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \nRe-live history at the Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment on August 3-4\, 2019 at the Bushy Run Battlefield in Jeannette\, Pennsylvania. Witness the 2 day Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment on the only recognized French and Indian War battlefield in Pennsylvania. Activities include two battles daily\, sutlers\, British and ranger encampments. Tour the Bushy Run Battlefield\, Native American village and museum. Shop Sutler’s row; let your children enjoy special activities. Concessions available. \n\nBattle of Bushy Run Reenactment\nThe Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment is the premiere event for the year\, pitting the forces of his Royal Highness King George III against a confederation of Native Americans. See all the colors of war in the vibrant recreations of the two-day Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment that the various participants bring to life. Learn about how the battle progressed as well as how people lived in the mid-eighteenth century. \nTwo battle reenactments occur throughout the day. The morning battle starts at 11 a.m. and portrays the events that occurred on August 5\, while the afternoon engagement begins at 2 p.m. and shows the August 6 tactics that led to British victory. Also featured are eighteenth century military camps\, a sutler trade area\, period craftspeople and a children’s area! \nSaturday & Sunday Hours: 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.\nAdmission: Adults $8; Children 4-12\, $5; Under age 3 – FREE! \nLocation\nBushy Run Battlefield\n1253 Bushy Run Rd\nJeannette\, PA 15644\n(724) 527-5584 \nBattle of Bushy Run Reenactment Mini-Gallery\n\n \nAbout The Battle of Bushy Run\nColonel Henry Bouquet and a force of approximately 400 British soldiers left Carlisle in July to relieve the besieged Fort Pitt and end a series of unchecked attacks against frontier outposts. The opening of western Pennsylvania to settlement was the result of a decisive victory over the Native Americans at the Battle of Bushy Run\, August 5th and 6th\, 1763. Highlights of the site include the interpretive exhibit\, “The March to Bushy Run” at the site’s visitor center\, as well as guided and self-guided tours\, special events and educational programs. \nAbout The French and Indian War\nThe French and Indian War was a seven-year war in North America between England\, their American colonies\, and their Native American allies against the French and their Native American allies. When the war ended\, France was no longer in control of Canada and the Indians who had been threatening the American colonists were defeated. This war had become a world war. Great Britain spent a great deal of money in the conflict and colonists fully participated in this war. Both these facts were to have a profound effect on the future of the colonies. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”TripAdvisor Reviews: Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment”]\nBushy Run Is A Five Star Battlefield\nThe site of the 1763 battle between the British Army and Chief Pontiac’s Native American Confederation is a must see attraction. Visitors will first start at the visitor center\, which includes a small museum that details the events leading up to Pontiac’s Rebellion with the highlight of the museum being the 13 minute long documentary Road To Bushy Run. Afterwards\, you can either take a golf cart tour that loops around the battlefield or take your own self guided tour and walk in the footsteps the men who fought 250 years ago did. Sadly\, the first day’s battleground has become barren due to a farm being located on the site at one point. Edge Hill\, where the second day’s fighting occured is still preserved in the state it was during the battle. \nThere are numerous hiking trails that weave through the woods around Edge Hill (which provide an idea of what the 1st day’s battle ground was like). The site’s staff are very nice and informative and helped answer a lot of my questions. I will recommend doing a French and Indian War themed trip if you are visiting from out of the area\, as there are other sites relating to Bushy Run in the area. Overall\, Bushy Run Battlefield is a hidden gem in Western Pennsylvania that is a must see site. \n[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment on the first weekend of August in Jeannette\, Pennsylvania. \n \nTags: Battle of Bushy Run Reenactment\, Bushy Run Battlefield Reenactment\, French and Indian War Reenactment \nView other French & Indian War Reenactments and Other Events

On the morning of July 29\, 1781\, while Alston and his band of revolutionaries were camped at the home\, they were attacked by a larger unit of Tories\, whose leader was the notorious David Fanning. \nMrs. Alston and the children sought refuge by standing inside the chimney of the home. When the loyalists decided to set the home on fire by rolling against it a cart filled with burning straw\, Mrs. Alston bravely went to the front porch and negotiated a truce. \nAfter several casualties on both sides\, Alston surrendered. The house was left riddled with bullet holes\, many of which can still be seen today. \nAbout the Alston House\nThe House in the Horseshoe is a historic house in Sanford\, North Carolina \, and a historic site managed by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources’ Historic Sites division. \nLocation\nHouse in the Horseshoe State Historic Site\n288 Alston House Road\nSanford\, NC 27330\n910-947-2051 \nMark your calendar so you don’t miss the next House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment the first weekend in August in Sanford\, North Carolina. \n \nTags: House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment\, House in the Horseshoe Revolutionary War Battle Reenactment\, Living History \nView Horseshoe Militia Muster & Candlelight Tour Details

This fort went on to become its most famous fur trade post. Although called a fort\, the post was neither a government nor a military installation\, but a privately owned commercial establishment founded to engage in business with the Northern Plains Tribes. \nBuilt at the request of the Assiniboine nation\, Fort Union Trading Post\, then called Fort Union\, quickly emerged as the Upper Missouri’s most profitable fur trade post. This trade business continued until 1867\, giving rise to a uniquely diverse\, peaceful\, and productive social and cultural environment that helped make Fort Union western America’s longest-lasting fur trade post. celebration after a successful summer of recreation activities in Fort Hall. The event was called a social powwow that drew in many young and old dancers and local drum groups to celebrate. One of the main highlights was the Miss Shoshone-Bannock pageant that drew in over 10 plus young ladies from around the reservation. This tradition continues every year.\nPlaceholder \n\nShoshone-Bannock Festival Powwow: Men’s Grass\nOriginal Crown In Museum\nToday\, the beaded sash is still worn but in 2006 the original crown was retired and is presently housed at the local Tribal museum. Each contestant competes every August in the areas of: public speaking\, personal interview\, traditional dish\, traditional dance and a traditional talent. Miss Shoshone-Bannock is a Tribal ambassador and role model for the younger generations. \nOne-of-a-Kind Pageant\nThe cultural pageant was the first of its kind and considered to be a prestigious new title for young Shoshone-Bannock women. Each contestant wore their finest handmade deer skin dresses and family beadwork. The winner held the title for one year where she relinquished her title the following year at the powwow. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s\, where the winner was given a fully beaded ‘Miss Shoshone-Bannock’ sash and matching turquoise crown with the Shoshone rose to wear throughout her reign. \nFort Hall Indian Relay\nThe Indian Relay races have long since been a part of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes culture. The sport actually originated here on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation over a hundred years ago. Many families that participated in the sport decades ago are still participating and passing this legacy on from generation to generation. The Indian Relay teams consist of three horses and four team members (1 rider\, 1 catcher (Mugger)\, and 2 holders). The rider must complete a lap with each horse riding bareback. The rider must dismount without any help from their team mates and without losing control of their horses. \nVendors\nTo join the festival as a vendor\, complete the appropriate vendor form and follow the instructions. SUMMARY:Meskwaki Powwow
DESCRIPTION:2019 Meskwaki Powwow\n\nRate This Event\n \nExperience the 105th Annual Meskwaki Powwow on August 8-11\, 2019 at the Meskwaki Powwow Grounds on the Meskwaki Indian Settlement in Tama\, Iowa. The Annual Meskwaki Powwow originated from the traditional religious and social beliefs of the Meskwaki Tribe. Today\, it is not so much a religious event\, but more of a social gathering. Specifically\, today’s event is derived from the “Green Corn Dance” and other social events of the Tribe in their early years. The “Green Corn Dance” was an annual event that took place during the harvesting of crops. The “Field Days” held from 1902 to 1912\, lasted about a week\, with dancing\, games\, and horse racing. It was a social gathering without a harvest. \n\nMeskwaki Powwow\nFrom “Field Days” to Meskawki Powwow\nIn 1912\, the Chief appointed 15 men to plan for the next year. The appointed men decided to change the name from “Field Days” to “Powwow”. The first powwow was held at the present location. \n“Today’s” Meskawki Powwow\nToday\, the Meskwaki Annual Powwow is the only one of its kind in Iowa. It is a four day event used to celebrate the end of summer. As the color and intrigue of it all has drawn the most attention from the outside world\, the Meskwaki Annual Powwow features dancing\, singing\, handcrafts\, food\, games and fun. Although dance styles and content have evolved over the years\, the Meskwaki still consider the event a time of reaffirmation and hope\, of kinship and friendship\, and of celebration. They are thankful for the opportunity to share a part of who they are as Meskwaki with you. Most importantly\, they hope you walk away with open minds and open hearts to be able to respect and learn from different cultures such as theirs. \n~ ~ GENERAL ADMISSION ~ ~\nAdults: $7.00\nChildren (6-12): $5.00; $3.00 on Thursday/Children’s Day\nChildren 5 and under: FREE \nPERFORMANCE SCHEDULE\nThursday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nChildren’s Day: Ages 6-12 $3.00\nFriday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nSenior Citizen’s Day: 55+ $3.00\nSaturday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nVeteran’s Day: $3.00 (Must show proof)\nSunday\n1:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Grand Entry\, Intertribal Dancing\nSpecial Events to be announced. \nMeskwaki Powwow Gallery Preview\n\nView Full Gallery\nMeskwaki Powwow Head Staff\nEmcee: Mike Keahna\, Dawson Davenport\nArena Director: David “Odie” Oldbear Jr\nColor Guard: Robert Morgan Post 701\nSound Man: Dennis Keahna Jr \nUNIQUE DANCES PERFORMED AT THE MESKWAKI POWWOW\nAs always\, some things change and some things endure\, just as you\, we like some of the ways and things that have long endured\, some of the old-time foods\, the dances\, the arts and crafts\, passed down from our fore bearers that we want to preserve for our children.\nToday\, we share with you the appreciation of what is truly distinctive about our way of life. We welcome you to our beautiful Meskwaki Indian Settlement. \nDances at the Meskwaki Powwow\nFriendship Dance: A universal dance among all tribal nations\, it welcomes all visitors and guests to the host tribe. The Friendship Dance expresses goodwill and friendship among all humankind. \nMeskwaki Dance: A dance unique to the Meskwaki people. Whenever a gathering of tribal groups took place\, each group or tribe performed their own special dance. This dance\, performed by the Meskwaki\, depicts their characteristics in the times of peace and war.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More about Dances at the Meskwaki Powwow”]\nHarvest or Bean Dance: This dance recognizes the importance of the resources of life; food for the villages for the coming year. This dance gives thanks to the Great Spirit for the abundance of food and bountiful crops. \nSwan Dance: The women of the tribe lead this dance with graceful movement. It is a tribute to those who have gone before us and their shadowy forms that are unseen. The Swan Dance depicts the graceful movement of birds\, especially the most majestic of all water birds. \nBuffalo Head Dance: This dance is in honor of the magnificent buffalo and the creator after a successful hunt. The songs and movement of the dancers are dedicated to the enduring spirit of the buffalo. \nPipe Dance: This dance honors warriors for their bravery and heroism in times of conflict. \nShield Dance: In pantomime this dance depicts battle skill in hand to hand combat. This dance was adopted from the Southern Plains Indians in the 1940’s as a recognition of contact in earlier times with the Kiowa\, Cheyenne\, Arapaho and Comanche. \nShawnee Dance: Whenever the allied tribes came together for council or celebration\, they often exchanged elements of cultural value. The Shawnee Dance was given as a token of friendship to the Meskwaki from the Shawnee Tribe in Oklahoma. The five tribes who were closely associated historically in language and traditional ways\, were the Shawnee\, Mascouten\, Kickapoo\, Sauk and Fox (Meskwaki Nations). \nRabbit Dance: Originally known as the Owl Dance\, a similar Meskwaki Version\, this social dance is borrowed from the Lakota. It is a popular two step among all tribes. \nVictory Dance: This dance is dedicated to the men and women of the armed forces and it is a dance to honor veterans who have returned home to their loved ones. \nIntertribal Dance: A generic dance often performed by anyone in costume during the main performance dances; it is a “break dance”. \nSnake Dance: Dancers participate in a “follow-the-leader” style dance that mimics the life cycle of the Snake including when it eats\, sheds its skin\, and dies. Contrary to its description\, it’s a very fun dance for all ages: dancers\, singers and observers alike.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nLocation\nMeskwaki Powwow Grounds\nX988+86 Tama\, IA 52339\n(641) 484-4678\nGoogle Map Link \nDirections: The Meskwaki Settlement is located along the Iowa river about half way between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids in central Iowa. The rendezvous is held in conjunction with the Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow\, sponsored by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). The annual gathering is their biggest of the year\, a time when Grand Portage comes alive and reflects on its rich heritage. Reenactors from across the country and Canada gather to camp and challenge each other to games and skills from our historic past\, next door to the pow wow at the Grand Portage Historic Rendezvous Encampment. View Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Details \nAbout The Grand Portage National Monument\nThe Grand Portage National Monument is a U.S. national monument located on the North Shore of Lake Superior. This historical place was the center of fur trade activity and the Native America Ojibwe heritage. The monument is surrounded by 710 acres within the boundaries of Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and is the location of the annual Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow and Grand Portage Rendezvous. \nAbout The Grand Portage\nThe Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs that passes through waterfalls and rapids that flow into Lake Superior. It became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country\, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. In August every year\, the voyageurs would show up and the company owners would come from Europe\, and Grand Portage became a rough and tumble celebration. After the celebration\, the furs were loaded aboard massive voyageur canoes and paddled across the Great Lakes and eventually shipped to Europe where many became hats. In the states\, the voyageurs would carry trade goods up the portage and then paddle 100s of miles back to their outposts. This repeated until beaver was almost extinct. Luckily for the beaver\, the fur hats that their pelts were used went out of fashion. \nNow\, each year on the second weekend of August\, fur trade reenactors descend on Grand Portage\, sent up canvas tents\, haul birchbark canoes around and the weekend becomes a fun family weekend. The local tribe’s powwow also goes on at the same time. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow at the Grand Portage Monument Heritage Center in Grand Portage\, Minnesota. \nTags: Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow Wow\, Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Powwow\, Minnesota Powwow\, Minnesota Pow Wow \nView Grand Portage Rendezvous Days\nView Other Minnesota Powwows

On both sides of the site\, encampments for the Confederate and Union armies are constructed\, allowing visitors to interact with reenactors in character of the era. Visitors can ask about how the war is going or what they are going to have for dinner and the reenactors will answer from the period of the battle being reenacted. \nCamp Visits Welcome\nThe interaction with the reenactors on-site is an up close and personal educational opportunity. Although there is a large crowd\, the Hale Farm Civil War Reenactment offers a huge space. There are plenty of opportunities for a personal chat with a reenactor—and they welcome that. They love history and they want to share what life was like during the Civil War. Hundreds of reenactors from all over the country\, depicting aspects of life during the Civil War from various perspectives will attend. You won’t see a reenactor with a cell phone or any modern clothing in either of the encampments\, which makes the experience genuine and realistic for everyone in attendance. \nFacilities Access – Making Everyone Welcome\nThere is ample parking at the site and there is a drop off lane to bring people to the front door for guests with limited mobility. The site can accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. Many paths that lead away from the Gatehouse are gravel\, so please anticipate this type of terrain. The Gatehouse has handicap accessible rest rooms and visitors can see the battle from an accessible area outside the Gatehouse. \nReeinactor Registration Online\nReenactor Amenities \n\nFirewood is available for each encampment\, Union & Confederate\, on a first come first serve basis. Registered reenactors will receive a firewood token at the Registration Tent upon arrival. Fires in camp are permitted. Please dig out sod\, and replace at the end of the weekend.
