The opening of western Pennsylvania to settlement was the result of a decisive victory over the Native Americans at the Battle of Bushy Run\, August 5th and 6th\, 1763. Highlights of the site include the interpretive exhibit\, “The March to Bushy Run” at the site’s visitor center\, as well as guided and self-guided tours\, special events and educational programs. \nAbout The French and Indian War\nThe French and Indian War was a seven-year war in North America between England\, their American colonies\, and their Native American allies against the French and their Native American allies. When the war ended\, France was no longer in control of Canada and the Indians who had been threatening the American colonists were defeated. This war had become a world war. Great Britain spent a great deal of money in the conflict and colonists fully participated in this war. Visitors will first start at the visitor center\, which includes a small museum that details the events leading up to Pontiac’s Rebellion with the highlight of the museum being the 13 minute long documentary Road To Bushy Run. Afterwards\, you can either take a golf cart tour that loops around the battlefield or take your own self guided tour and walk in the footsteps the men who fought 250 years ago did. Sadly\, the first day’s battleground has become barren due to a farm being located on the site at one point. Edge Hill\, where the second day’s fighting occured is still preserved in the state it was during the battle. \nThere are numerous hiking trails that weave through the woods around Edge Hill (which provide an idea of what the 1st day’s battle ground was like). The site’s staff are very nice and informative and helped answer a lot of my questions. I will recommend doing a French and Indian War themed trip if you are visiting from out of the area\, as there are other sites relating to Bushy Run in the area. At the Pike River Rendezvous\, the Colonial through Western Fur Trade era of the 1650s through 1850s will come alive. Pike River Rendezvous is a family-friendly\, free event. Highlights of the event including storytelling\, musical entertainment and pirate battles\, along with more than 300 reenactors adding to the atmosphere. \n\nPike River Rendezvous\nThroughout the Pike River Rendezvous\, visitors will be able to go back in time to an era when Native Americans and fur traders gathered to exchange goods and services and to celebrate. Costumed reenactors talk about what life was like during the fur-trading era and will demonstrate the crafts and trades of the time. Learn to die fabric trade with trappers throw a hawk start a fire and many more interesting things. Our event is a invite only\, and is dedicated to holding a Historical event. This is a Traditional Pow Wow\, no competition\, hosted by the Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band. This event is held on Tribal land located at Zane Shawnee Caverns and Southwind Park just outside of Bellefontaine Ohio. Celebrate and/or observe Traditional song\, drum and dance. DESCRIPTION:2019 House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment\n\nRate This Event\n \nThe 40th Annual House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment comes to life on August 3-4\, 2019 at the House in the Horseshoe State Historic Site in Sanford\, North Carolina. There will be a variety of Revolutionary War activities and demonstrations throughout the day including a reenactment of the fight between Patriot and Loyalist militias held at 2:00 p.m. both days. There is a $5.00 fee for parking. \n\nHouse in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment\nMusket and cannon firing drills\, tomahawk throwing\, Revolutionary War militia camps and a wreath-laying ceremony by the Sons of the American Revolution are among the many activities of the House in the Horseshoe Battle Re-Enactment. On the domestic scene\, skillet throwing\, weaving\, spinning\, a discussion on herbs\, 18th century beer brewing and surgeons and medicines will be presented. \nThe Midnight Midwives will be in the garden during the weekend giving short lectures on medicinal gardens and apothecary recipes during the revolutionary war. Also on the House in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment schedule is the battle\, musket and cannon demos\, a fashion show of the same time period\, an interactive look at children’s games\, and so much more. \nReenactment Event Hours\nSaturday 9:30 am – 5:00 pm\nSunday 9:30 am – 3:00 pm\nAdmission – Free\nParking – $5 (used to maintain house) \nHouse in the Horseshoe Battle Reenactment Mini-Gallery\n\n \nHistory of the Battle at House in the Horseshoe\nDuring the American Revolution\, groups of citizen-soldiers called Whigs or revolutionists\, and Tories\, who were still loyal to the king of England\, waged irregular warfare against each other in North Carolina’s backcountry (western frontier). \nThe Alson House\, (House in the Horseshoe) was then the home of Whig colonel Philip Alston. On the morning of July 29\, 1781\, while Alston and his band of revolutionaries were camped at the home\, they were attacked by a larger unit of Tories\, whose leader was the notorious David Fanning. \nMrs. Alston and the children sought refuge by standing inside the chimney of the home. When the loyalists decided to set the home on fire by rolling against it a cart filled with burning straw\, Mrs. Alston bravely went to the front porch and negotiated a truce. \nAfter several casualties on both sides\, Alston surrendered. The Great Road was the main thoroughfare going west to the Frontier. It was traveled by the likes of George Washington\, Daniel Boone\, Andrew Lewis\, William Preston\, Adam Harman\, the Ingles and Draper families. The Great Road Encampment celebrates the history of the road that provided a path through the Blue Ridge Mountains and eventually through Cumberland Gap to the Western frontier and honors all who passed through the Valleys of Southwest Virginia in the quest for a better life. \nEach canvas tent set up in the park during The Great Road Encampment by colonial reenactors provides visitors with a glimpse of 18th century life. There is a slight climb in elevation when coming from the smaller parking lot which is about 500 feet from the fort. \n \nAbout Fort Union Trading Post\nFort Union Trading Post was constructed on the spacious plains in 1828\, near where the mighty Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers joined by John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company. This fort went on to become its most famous fur trade post. Although called a fort\, the post was neither a government nor a military installation\, but a privately owned commercial establishment founded to engage in business with the Northern Plains Tribes. \nBuilt at the request of the Assiniboine nation\, Fort Union Trading Post\, then called Fort Union\, quickly emerged as the Upper Missouri’s most profitable fur trade post. $400[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nSince 1964: How the Shoshone-Bannock Festival Powwow Got Its Start\nIn August 1964\, the former Recreation Director Reeves Nawoosky (Comanche) planned a year end celebration after a successful summer of recreation activities in Fort Hall. The event was called a social powwow that drew in many young and old dancers and local drum groups to celebrate. One of the main highlights was the Miss Shoshone-Bannock pageant that drew in over 10 plus young ladies from around the reservation. This tradition continues every year.\nPlaceholder \n\nShoshone-Bannock Festival Powwow: Men’s Grass\nOriginal Crown In Museum\nToday\, the beaded sash is still worn but in 2006 the original crown was retired and is presently housed at the local Tribal museum. Each contestant competes every August in the areas of: public speaking\, personal interview\, traditional dish\, traditional dance and a traditional talent. Miss Shoshone-Bannock is a Tribal ambassador and role model for the younger generations. \nOne-of-a-Kind Pageant\nThe cultural pageant was the first of its kind and considered to be a prestigious new title for young Shoshone-Bannock women. Each contestant wore their finest handmade deer skin dresses and family beadwork. The winner held the title for one year where she relinquished her title the following year at the powwow. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s\, where the winner was given a fully beaded ‘Miss Shoshone-Bannock’ sash and matching turquoise crown with the Shoshone rose to wear throughout her reign. \nFort Hall Indian Relay\nThe Indian Relay races have long since been a part of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes culture. The sport actually originated here on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation over a hundred years ago. Many families that participated in the sport decades ago are still participating and passing this legacy on from generation to generation. The Indian Relay teams consist of three horses and four team members (1 rider\, 1 catcher (Mugger)\, and 2 holders). The rider must complete a lap with each horse riding bareback. Specifically\, today’s event is derived from the “Green Corn Dance” and other social events of the Tribe in their early years. The “Green Corn Dance” was an annual event that took place during the harvesting of crops. The “Field Days” held from 1902 to 1912\, lasted about a week\, with dancing\, games\, and horse racing. It was a social gathering without a harvest. \n\nMeskwaki Powwow\nFrom “Field Days” to Meskawki Powwow\nIn 1912\, the Chief appointed 15 men to plan for the next year. The appointed men decided to change the name from “Field Days” to “Powwow”. The first powwow was held at the present location. \n“Today’s” Meskawki Powwow\nToday\, the Meskwaki Annual Powwow is the only one of its kind in Iowa. It is a four day event used to celebrate the end of summer. This dance was adopted from the Southern Plains Indians in the 1940’s as a recognition of contact in earlier times with the Kiowa\, Cheyenne\, Arapaho and Comanche. \nShawnee Dance: Whenever the allied tribes came together for council or celebration\, they often exchanged elements of cultural value. The Shawnee Dance was given as a token of friendship to the Meskwaki from the Shawnee Tribe in Oklahoma. The five tribes who were closely associated historically in language and traditional ways\, were the Shawnee\, Mascouten\, Kickapoo\, Sauk and Fox (Meskwaki Nations). \nRabbit Dance: Originally known as the Owl Dance\, a similar Meskwaki Version\, this social dance is borrowed from the Lakota. Wander through a world of teepees and vendors selling beads\, blankets\, clothing and other crafts. Try BBQ salmon on cedar planks cooked over an open fire pit in authentic fashion. The Nesika Illahee Pow Wow to everyone. \n\nNesika Illahee Pow Wow\nAll events for the Nesika Illahee Pow Wow take place on Government Hill (except the parade) – Follow signs for parking. The parade takes place on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. through downtown Siletz. The celebration will start with the crowning of this year’s Siletz Royalty on Friday at 6:00 p.m. All dance styles will enter the arena at 7 p.m. during the first Grand Entry. The Renfrew Museum and Park consists of 107 acres along the east branch of the Antietam Creek and includes beautifully restored buildings that date back to the 1790s when Daniel Royer purchased the land and built a tannery and gristmill. The reenactment has been held since 1980 and has been sponsored by the 139th PVI Co. F since the very beginning. \n\nRenfrew Pk Civil War Reenactment\nThe Renfrew Farm boasts farmland\, woodland\, and meadows and 50 acres of wilderness/wildlife preserve. Shaded camping for all military and civilians is located in a beautiful grotto area with a stream\, at the center of all thereenactment events. Participants are provided with fresh\, cold running water\, fire wood\, and modern bathroom facilities. \nLive a Day in the Life of a Civil War Soldier\nThe Civil War Reenactment isn’t all cannons and gunpowder. The event\, and others like it also give a glimpse into daily life for civilians and soldiers during the war. Experience the beauty and richness of Native American culture when the Intertribal Indian Club of Tulsa (IICOT) hosts the Annual Pow Wow of Champions. IICOT invites every one to attend a magnificent celebration of Native American culture. The ORU Mabee Center in Tulsa will come alive in a colorful expression of dance\, drum music and song as members of tribal nations from around the country gather to honor\, strengthen and share traditions with each other and the general public at this year’s IICOT Powwow of Champions. Over 300 dancers\, dressed in full Native American regalia\, will participate throughout the weekend\, including impressive grand entries\, intertribal dances and dance competitions. \n\nIICOT Powwow of Champions\nThe grand entries at the IICOT Powwow of Champions take place at the beginning of each dance session\, led by the Eagle Staff and a Native American color guard. The Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment is one of the largest museum events of the year as reenactors set up dozens of tents as they arrive at the Fort. The annual encampment recreates the bustle and excitement of the historic visit of fur traders to the Fort in 1855. DESCRIPTION:2019 LTBB Odawa Homecoming Pow Wow\n\nRate This Event\n \nJoin us for the 28th Annual Odawa Homecoming Pow Wow on August 10-11\, 2019 at the Little Traverse Bay Bands Pow Wow Grounds off Pleasantview Road in Harbor Springs\, Michigan. Come enjoy the singing\, dancing\, native food and over 20 vendors and artisan booths! The Odawa Homecoming Pow Wow is a family-friendly event sponsored by the  Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians\, so bring the whole family! \n\nLTBB Odawa Homecoming Pow Wow\nThe Homecoming Pow Wow showcases the Odawa traditions\, ceremonial dress\, singing\, dancing and cuisine. While some of the dance styles and songs are contemporary\, many are very old and passed down from generation to generation. The Odawa Homecoming Pow Wow serves as a time to bring the Odawa people together and to bring the Native and non-Native communities together as well. \nOne of the highlights of the Pow Wow is the crowning of a new Miss Odawa Nation on Saturday. The selection of a young woman to represent the Odawa people has occurred in some form since the 1930s. \nCraft and food vendors are open for business by 11 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The Grand Entry\, when the dancing begin\, is at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday. The Odawa Homecoming Pow Wow is free and open to the public. \nThe first Odawa Homecoming Pow Wow was held at Ottawa Stadium in Harbor Springs in 1992. It moved to the current Pow Wow Grounds in 2002. \nCamping\nCamping is available starting Friday on a first come basis next to the Odawa Pow Wow grounds and in the upper parking lot (overflow parking area.) Bathroom/Shower facilities will be open Saturday and Sunday 5am to 12pm. DESCRIPTION:2019 Como Mountain Man Rendezvous\n\nRate This\nEvent\n \nExperience a pre-1840s style gathering at the 35th Annual Como Mountain Man Rendezvous on August 10-17\, 2019 in Como\, Colorado. As a pre-1840s fur trade rendezvous re-enactment\, the Como Mountain Man Rendezvous strives in all aspects of this event to be true to that era in the Rocky Mountains. The Como Mountain Man Rendezvous is held about 6 miles south of the town of Como\, Colorado. \n\nComo Mountain Man Rendezvous\nComo is located in South Park\, an intermontane grassland basin. South Park is approximately 950 square miles of rolling hills and meadows at approximately 10\,000 feet altitude. This region was a favorite trapping and wintering spot during the fur trade era. The site has beautiful with views of the mountains both South and West. We hope we are lucky enough to continue to use this site for years to come. This will be the 32nd Como Rendezvous. They have been held in the South Park region of Colorado all previous years. \nOur Como Mountain Man Rendezvous site is owned by the JBGardneRanch and is donated to us for this event by Amanda Woodbury. Without Amanda Woodbury and the JBGardneRanch our rendezvous would not be possible. We owe a great debt of appreciation to Amanda and the JBGardneRanch. \nThis year camp fees will be by donation only. One jar will be for the costs of the event and the other jar (Critters “Pay it forward” fund) is to give directly back to the owner to show our gratitude for letting us use this site. DESCRIPTION:2019 Old Fort Niagara Soldiers of the Revolution\n\nRate This Event\n \nExperience Revolutionary War New York frontier life at the Old Fort Niagara Soldiers of the Revolution reenactment on August 10-11\, 2019 during the American Revolution at Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown\, New York. Activities and demonstrations include period camps\, musket and artillery demonstrations\, and military skirmishes. \nThe daily Revolutionary War re-enactment battles will occur behind the Visitor Center where prisoners will be seized and marched into the fort\, and visitors will be encouraged to follow the procession.
