For many years in the 20th century\, the Festival helped raise funds for the Mohegan Church and for Mohegan activities. In 2003\, in an effort to scale back and return to its roots\, the celebration returned to Fort Shantok after many years at a local high school. Today\, the festival is held at Fort Shantok at the end of summer\, with the corn harvest\, during the third weekend in August. This gives us an opportunity to get together and share some aspects of our culture with our friends and neighbors in the community. In keeping with tradition\, it includes crafts and food items for sale\, plus traditional dance and storytelling. \nHistory of the Mohegan Wigwam Festival\nBefore the arrival of the Europeans\, Mohegans held several celebrations throughout the year to give thanks to the Creator for the earth’s many gifts. The annual Corn Thanksgiving was most important. Tribespeople thanked Mundu\, the Creator and Great Mystery for the gift of corn\, a source of both spiritual and physical sustenance. \n \nThe name “Wigwam” comes from the word Wigwomun\, meaning “welcome” or “come in the house.” In many ways\, the Wigwam was a community open house and homecoming. Both corn and home play central roles in the celebration. In early times\, the Festival was held on the site of the current Mohegan Church\, at a “fair tree.” But the tradition started to fade in the 1800s with increasing pressure for the Tribe to Christianize and assimilate. Medicine Woman Emma Baker revived the Festival just as Tribal lands started to break up in 1860. She incorporated it with the activities of the Mohegan Church Ladies’ Sewing Society\, making it a source of Tribal solidarity. Located on lands assigned to the Ponca Indians as a reservation after their removal from Nebraska in 1877\, the park is a roughly triangular area of 26 acres lying just north of the Ponca Indian community of White Eagle.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe park has been in use by the Ponca Indians as a campground and site of traditional ceremonies and dances since 1878. The main features of the park are a welled spring and two dance arenas still used for ceremonies\, social activities and the annual Ponca Powwow. The smaller South Arena\, in use since the late 1870s\, is simply an open grassy area surrounded by trees. The larger North Arena\, in use for most of the 20th century\, lies on open ground in a circle of bleachers.\nWhite Eagle Park is the first property in Oklahoma to be nominated and listed as a traditional cultural place on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located five and one-half miles south of Ponca City in the White Eagle community of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma\, \nThe campground in White Eagle Park was the location for one of the most important\, unifying\, and enduring Ponca traditions\, the Ponca Powwow. By 1938\, the annual Ponca Powwow had grown to a four-or five day event with large crowds converging on the campground at White Eagle Park to watch or participate in the dances. They could also view exhibits of Ponca crafts and watch baseball games featuring the Ponca Indian Cyclones. A Powwow Princess was chosen on the opening Thursday night\, a list of dance contestants was announced\, and a schedule of events through Sunday night was advertised in the newspapers. \nEarlier in the 1930s\, a New Deal program\, thought to be the Works Progress Administration or the Civilian Conservation Corps\, Indian Division\, had walled the spring and built a gazebo over it and a stairway for easier access from the camping areas. Workmen had also constructed three large five-tiered stone and concrete bleachers on level ground at the north end of the park\, which provided audience seating for a space that served as both a baseball diamond and a large\, lighted dance ground now known as the North Arena. For generations of the Ponca people\, particularly those who no longer lived in the White eagle community in the late 20th century\, the Ponca Powwow and the return to the campground at White Eagle Park meant coming home.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nPoncas Create “Fancy Dance”\nNot a historical dance tradition of any tribe\, the Fancy Dance was created by members of the Ponca tribe in the 1920s and 1930s\, in an attempt to preserve their culture and religion. At this time\, Native American religious dances were outlawed by the United States and Canadian governments. Traditional dances went “underground\,” to avoid government detection. However\, this dance\, loosely based on the traditional War Dance\, was considered appropriate to be performed for visitors on reservations and at “Wild West” shows. Two young Ponca boys are specifically credited with developing the fast-paced dance that the audiences loved and the Ponca Tribe soon built their own dance arena in White Eagle\, Oklahoma.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nWithin no time\, other tribes continued the practice and created new dances that could legally be danced in public. In the 1930s\, the Kiowa and Comanche created new styles of dance regalia that was incorporated into the Fancy Dance. \nEven before the Fancy Dance was established\, an intertribal Pow Wow circuit had already been organized where various tribes held dance contests. These became an important source of revenue during the Great Depression. In the late 1930s\, women also began to perform in the Fancy Dance \nThe dance is fast paced\, colorful\, and highly energetic\, often including tricks and extremely athletic movements. Dancing regalia includes brightly colored feather bustles and headwear\, beaded bodices\, leggings\, shawls\, and moccasins. Clothes are also decorated with fringe\, feathers\, embroidery or ribbon work\, and other rich designs. Beaded cuffs\, chokers\, earrings\, bracelets\, and eagle plumes are also worn. Custer and the 7th Calvary. It was a victory celebration to honor many Lakota\, Dakota\, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors who fought in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The Akicita also carried home the personal flag of the fallen General Custer along with several troop guidon flags.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nIn the years since the Battle of the Little Big Horn took place\, the US Army has never attempted to claim the captured flags from Indian Country. In 1984 Francis White Bird\, Sicangu Lakota tribal member and Decorated Vietnam Veteran\, had replicas of the captured flags made. A ceremony was held at Fort Meade in Sturgis to dedicate the flags. The flags were carried in the grand entry at the Rosebud Wacipi that year for the first time and Mr. White Bird gave the history of them and the celebration’s origins. The Lakota descendants present that day were proud to be part of a waktegli waci or victory dance. \nOn the first day of the fair\, there would be a morning charge. Many young men and women would mount their horses for a long charge through camp. Lakota victory songs were sung and the women sounded their trill. The Wacipi was held for people to dance and enjoy themselves. Other ceremonies\, such as a young woman’s coming out celebration or other feasts to honor loved ones\, were also held during the Wacipi. \nAnd when sacred ceremonies were taken underground after being outlawed by the federal government\, our people would sometimes conduct them under the cover of the annual celebration so as to avoid detection. I remember listening to the story of a kettle dance held during the Wacipi. A late Sicangu elder witnessed this ceremony as a child. She spoke of watching a big crowd surround her older relative as they took part in the ceremony. Hugh Glass led a storied life at the beginnings of the 19th century. In the summer of 1823\, Glass as part of a fur trading party led by General Ashley\, was attacked by a grizzly bear along the shores of the Grand River at a point somewhere south of present day Lemmon SD. He fought the grizzly to the death\, eventually killing the animal. Badly wounded Glass was left in the care of fellow expedition members John Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger till he either recovered or died while the expedition would move on. Though accounts vary on the specifics\, Fitzgerald and Bridger abandoned Glass\, either because they believed he was fatally wounded or because they were attacked by a Native American tribe and had to leave to escape. \nHugh Glass did not die that day however. Alone\, removed of all his gear and supplies\, Glass would make an astounding journey. The Tattoo’s opening ceremony follows with a ritual presentation and placement of historic flags by each corps around the perimeter of the field. Following the Junior Colonials\, the Junior Fife and Drum Corps of Deep River and Grand Republic of Southbury will play. \nThen the musical evening of fun and camaraderie accelerates with the start of a traditional fife and drum corps jam session. Everyone is invited to stay and participate in this event. The Westbrook Drum Corps Muster Tattoo takes place each year on Westbrook’s Ted Lane Field opposite the Town Green and abutting the public parking lot next to the Westbrook Firehouse on South Main Street. \nOn Saturday\, starting at 11:00 am\, the 50 fife and drum corps units will step off to march through town in a parade that will end at Ted Lane Field at the rear of the Riggio Building. Fort Frederick was built in 1756 to defend the frontier against French and Indian raiding parties coming east from the French Fort Duquesne\, in what is now Pittsburgh. Fort Frederick is unique because of its strong stone wall\, large size\, and roomy barracks. Fort Frederick also saw service during the American Revolution as a prison for British soldiers. \nFor the next 131 years\, the fort and surrounding lands were farmed. During the Civil War\, Union troops were often stationed near the fort to guard the C & O Canal. In 1922\, the State of Maryland acquired the fort. During the Great Depression of the 1930s\, a company of the Civilian Conservation Corps restored the fort and began development of the state park. In 1975\, the park reconstructed two soldier’s barracks inside the fort. These barracks are open seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on the weekends in the spring and fall. Just browsing the trader booths or talking to people makes you part of the celebration. \nWhy Is This Called “Potawatomi Trails Pow Wow”?\nThe Potawatomi Trails were established by the Native Americans who lived in this area and marked their footpaths to indicate directions. Small oak saplings were bent and tied into knots as signs to show the correct direction to travel. This pow wow honors these people and their descendants who left these markers behind. Don’t miss out on the formal ball or Lincoln’s speech. \nFood\nYou can’t talk about the Civil War Muster without talking about food and most importantly the Root Beer and Lemonade stand. It’s easy to find on the corner of Brown and Randolph streets. It’s always easy to find\, just look for the longest line. The best part is once you purchase your bottle (they offer a variety of sizes) you can take it back and have it refilled at a discounted price. Usually very close to the root beer stand is the kettle corn. Don’t worry you won’t have any problem finding it. Just take a deep sniff and follow your nose to the sweet smell of cooking kettle corn. Once you have your drink you will of course need something to eat. You won’t be disappointed in the amount of choices of food. Food vendors line the main drag of the park and you can get everything from a pulled pork sandwich to deep fried Oreos. \nWhat to Bring\nAugust in Michigan is hot\, so come prepared. Bring something to sit on while watching the battle\, blankets or camp chairs work fine. Bring or be prepared to purchase water. There is little shade at Cascades Falls Park and you will want to stay hydrated. Wear\, and bring\, sunscreen and slip on your comfy walking shoes. If you have little ones\, or someone that is sensitive to loud noises\, consider bringing a set of ear plugs. The battle gets very loud. \n \nBonus Info\nThis is a FREE event.
