Seating is limited\, so bring folding chairs\, too! Vendors will be onhand to offer various items such as beadwork\, drums\, leather clothing and jewelry made of sliver or other metals. Food items that will include pow wow favorites like fry bread\, Indian tacos and buffalo hamburgers. \nOrganizers expect hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators to attend the Indian Council of Many Nations Summer Pow Wow from around the region\, including those who traveled from Oklahoma\, South Dakota\, New Mexico\, Iowa and Nebraska. \nThe festivities will begin Saturday with the crowing of the Pow Wow Princess\, followed by Gourd Dancing at noon\, then at 2:00 p.m. by a Grand Entry and intertribal dancing. It was the first major battle in the Kentucky Campaign. The battle took place on and around what is now the grounds of the Blue Grass Army Depot\, outside Richmond\, Kentucky. Confederates captured over 4\,300 Union troops. Total casualties were 5\,353 (206 killed\, 844 wounded\, and 4\,303 captured or missing) on the Union side\, 451 (78 killed\, 372 wounded\, and one missing) for the Confederates. Confederate units would control Kentuck until the Battle of Perryville in early October. You can also visit the museum’s website using the link at the right. \nWhat is a Rendezvous?\nMountain Man Rendezvous were an annual gathering (1825–1840) at various locations held by a fur trading company at which trappers and mountain men sold their furs and hides and replenished their supplies. Rendezvous were known to be lively\, joyous places\, where all were allowed- free trappers\, Indians\, native trapper wives and children\, travelers and later on\, even tourists who would venture from even as far as Europe to observe the festivities. Rendezvous are still celebrated as gatherings of like-minded individuals or clubs in many walks of life. The fur trading rendezvous are celebrated by traditional black-powder rifle clubs all over the US and Canada. These gatherings range from small gatherings sponsored by local clubs to large gatherings like the Pacific Primitive Rendezvous and others. These gatherings include much of the same activities of the originals\, centering on the shooting of muzzle-loaded rifles\, trade guns and shotguns\, the throwing of knives and tomahawks and primitive archery\, as well as cooking\, dancing\, singing\, the telling of tall tales and of past rendezvous. Personas taken on by participants include trappers\, traders\, housewives\, Native Americans\, frontiersmen\, free-trappers and many others\, including soldiers. \nThese early frontier gatherings were called “rendezvous”\, French for a meeting at a particular place and time. After the Florida territory was transferred to the U.S.\, the Navy established a small depot here in 1822 to rid the area of pirates. Fishing\, salvaging wrecked ships and cigar manufacturing became the driving economic forces behind the island’s growth making Key West the richest city in Florida in the 1890s. The U.S. Army began construction of Fort Taylor\, named for President Zachary Taylor\, in 1845. With secession and the beginning of war in 1861\, Fort Taylor remained under federal control — one of only three fortresses in Florida to do so — and served as the headquarters for the Federal Navy’s East Gulf Coast Blockading Squadron staying on ‘active duty’ status through 1947.
