Buchanan Farmers provided the Confederate quartermaster with beef\, cotton\, yarn and corn. Buchanan also provided troops for the Confederate war effort\, most notably for the Botetourt Artillery. The unit distinguished itself in the defense of Vicksburg. \nFederal General David Hunter marched through Buchanan on June 13\, 1864 on his ill-fated raid in Lynchburg. The following day Confederate General J.D. Imboden reported that Hunter had driven Confederate troops under McCausland’s command out of Buchanan. Period letters tell how McCausland burned the covered bridge over the James River before leaving igniting a fire which destroyed close to thirty buildings. Personal letters of the era also tell of the devastation to Buchanan caused by the war including the burning of Col. John Anderson’s home known as Mount Joy\, the three day Federal occupation of Oak Hill\, the Anchorage\, the Presbyterian Manse as well as other private homes and offices throughout Town. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Buchanan Civil War History Weekend in downtown Buchanon\, Virginia. \n \nTags: Buchanan Civil War History Weekend\, Buchanan Civil War Weekend\, Buchanan Civil War Days\, Buchanan Civil War Reenactment\, Civil War Days\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Period reenactors set up tents\, don period dress and live as Clark and his troops lived — and they invite the public to interact with history. It’s really a way for the reenactors to share their knowledge and their love of history with visitors\, who can come and see history firsthand\,” Williams said. \nAbout Historic Locust Grove\nHistoric Locust Grove is located in Louisville\, Kentucky. Sitting high above the Ohio River the house was built in 1792 by William Croghan and his wife Lucy Clark Croghan. It was a bustling household that often became a gathering place for the other Clark siblings including both General George Rogers Clark and William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery and the many nieces and nephews of the large extended family. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Locust Grove Revolutionary War Encampment at Historic Locust Grove in Riverwood\, Kentucky in April. \n \nTags: Locust Grove Revolutionary War Encampment\, Revolutionary War Encampment \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments & Other Events

Take a step back in time to experience American frontier life through the 1840’s. At the Gathering at Macktown\, you will meet traders and trappers\, French voyageurs and Native Americans. Enjoy food and mercantile vendors\, demonstrations and black powder shooting. This Gathering at Macktown takes place on the last full weekend of April each year. \nOn the early frontier\, a Gathering was a special time once a year when trappers\, traders\, settlers and Native Americans came together to trade\, share news\, have sporting contests and ofttimes even marry. More civilized than an early Rendezvous\, since it now included settler families\, it was a greatly anticipated event that could last for several days.\nIn this living history event\, the Gathering at Macktown\, visitors can feel themselves transported to a different time. Whether tasting homemade root beer or period foods\, visiting the Native American village and experiencing a woodlands lifestyle\, learning the proper way to throw a tomahawk\, or strolling through a historic site seemingly untouched by time\, they will experience the 1650-1850 eras of exploration\, trade and early settlement. \n \nVisitors can talk with voyageurs\, trappers\, Native Americans\, militiamen\, settlers and craftsmen who have gathered to trade news and goods. There will be black powder shooting demonstrations\, archery demonstrations\, canoe landings\, demonstrations of old-time crafts and skills\, bag pipes and Janesville Drum and Fife Corps will perform – and more!!\nTour original buildings on a national historic site\, Macktown Living History Educational Center\, and meet Stephen Mack as he shares his home with you. Reenactors at the Annual Gathering at Macktown have studied the time period\, and love sharing what they have learned with camp visitors. The Gathering is expected attract about 100 reenactors roving in about the camp in period attire. \nThere will also be chances for guests to try out archery (times to be determined). Children will enjoy when the Candy Cannon is shot! (Shooting candy out of a cannon for children to gather.) There also will be a paddle dance\, comparable to the The Virginia Reel during the Civil War. \nAdmission\nAdults $7\nStudents $5\nChildren under 6 Free \nGathering at Macktown Mini-Gallery\n\nSaturday & Sunday\n9:00 a.m. – Voyageur Landing & Opening Ceremony \nEvent held rain or shine\nFree parking\nMore information\, call 815-624-4200. \nLocation\nMacktown Living History Center\n2221 Freeport Rd.\nRockton\, IL 61072\n(815) 624-4200 \nFor More Information\nCall (815) 624-4200; Email macktown1@frontier.com \nAbout Macktown\nThe Winnebago County Forest Preserve District\, which owns the land on which Macktown and the trading post once sat\, and the Macktown Living History Education Center are working to restore Macktown to its 1830 – 1846 historic condition. \nMacktown was founded in the mid-1830’s by Stephen Andrew Mack Jr.\, and his wife\, Mary Hononegah. You will be able to witness what their every day life was like in the training camp during the civil war along with living history displays and demonstrations and watch as they carry out their company level and above drills. \nThe kids will be fascinated to see the soldiers in period dress along with the weapons of the time and it will give them a chance to be up close and personal with people who have a passion for the civil war and can bring the history that they read in their books to life. Everyone will be fascinated by seeing what life was truly like in those days. \nCivil War Union Training Camp at Caesars Creek Pioneer Village Mini Gallery\n\n \nIf you have any questions about this event as either a participant or a visitor feel free to contact us to find out more. \nHours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday \nCost: $5 per person\n*all proceeds from the Pioneer Village events go to sustaining and maintaining the Pioneer Village and its buildings \nLocation\nCaesars Creek Pioneer Village\n3999 Pioneer Village Rd.\nWaynesville\, OH 45068\nCall: 937-705-0785\nEmail: admin@caesarscreekpioneervillage.com \nAbout Caesars Creek Pioneer Village\nCaesars Creek Pioneer Village hosts many events each year\, including the Civil War reenactment\, War Between the States each September\, the Spring Gathering in May\, and the Civil War Union Training Camp in April. \nMark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Civil War Union Training Camp at Caesars Creek Pioneer Village in Waynesville\, Ohio. \n \nTags: Civil War Union Training Camp at Caesars Creek Pioneer Village\, Civil War Union Training Camp\, Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments & Other Events

The Historic Jefferson Railway captures the spirit of the Civil War during Pilgrimage & Civil War Weekend in Jefferson\, by recreating the battle of the Great Locomotive Chase with soldiers\, sailors and Marines from the North and South. The Living History camps along the Big Cypress Bayou come alive as the cannons fire and the battle rages to gain possession of the train. \n\nJefferson Civil War Days: Main Battlefield\nImagine being carried back to the year 1864! The first weekend of May every year\, the whole town of Jefferson\, Texas is transported back to that time when the Civil War was coming to a close. For many years\, the Marion County Chamber of Commerce hosted the Battle of Port Jefferson\, a Civil War Reenactment\, possibly the largest in the state of Texas. This year\, the Chamber is supporting Target Jefferson Texas\, a Red River Campaign Objective\, in conjunction with the Great Locomotive Chase held by the Historic Jefferson Railway. The battle reenactments are hosted by the Blue Gray Alliance\, Cleburne’s Divison. \nDowntown Jefferson is overtaken with people walking the brick-lined streets in period clothing\, and here and there you’ll also see re-enactors riding around town on horseback. \nYou’ll experience living history and what it’s like to see historic type tent avenues filled with folks sitting by the fire sharing stories and tales of battles fought and those to come. In these encampments\, you’ll see cooking items from the past being used today. In fact\, everything is of a historic nature\, from the tents to the cots and bed-rolls\, buckets\, pots and dishware from the past. You can see these tent camps all over town\, stop by and talk to the re-enactors if you get a chance – they love to share with civilians. Be sure to stop by any of the Sutler’s tents to buy some of their wares. \nThe battles will take place as the train stops along the river in the RV Park. The train will depart the depot in downtown Jefferson on Saturday at 11:30\, 2:00\, 3:30 and 5:00; and on Sunday at 11:30 and 1:00. The train will stop on its way out to the RV Park at the Battlefield for about 5-7 minutes for a skirmish. Then the train will continue out of the RV park\, turn around and come back. It will stop again at the Battlefield for another 5-7 minutes for a skirmish. Reenactors can engage for a longer period at their discretion. The Virginia\, a replica ironclad with five working cannons\, joins the skirmish as it fires its cannons from the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou River. \nJefferson Civil War Days Mini-Gallery\n\n\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Summary Schedule (subject to change)”]\nFriday\n9:00 – 2:30 at Diamond Don RV Park\nSchool Day Civil War Living History\, “Day of Learning”\, complete with a gunboat and cannons. \nFriday Narrated Historical Day Tours: 9:30\, 10:30\, 11:30\, and 12:30\nThe Great Locomotive Chase/The Andrews Raid\, aboard a live steam train.\nTrain departs from Diamond Don RV Park. \nSaturday\n2:00 Battle Re-Enactment\n11:30\, 2:00\, 3:30 & 5:00 Train departs downtown Jefferson depot \nSunday\n1:00 Battle Re-Enactment\n11:30 & 1:00 Narrated Historical Train Day Tours\, scouting probes & skirmishes & Naval Battle. \nJefferson was the shipping port to the Mississippi. Spectator fee is $8 for either or both days. For those with physical limitations\, the easiest way to see the action is aboard the Steam Train\, which is wheelchair accessible. (If you need wheelchair access on the train\, please call Melissa at 903-742-2041 to reserve your spot.) \nExperience the Battle from a Live Steam Train!\nFamous campaigns were planned and conducted for the primary purpose of capturing or destroying railroad lines of value to the enemy. On the morning of April 12\, 1862\, the most famous locomotive of the Civil War\, the General\, was hijacked by the Union civilian spy\, James J. Andrews\, and his men. After a nail-biting eight hours and 87 miles\, the Southerners captured the General\, James Andrews and several of his men. \nExperience true civil war scouting probes and skirmishes aboard the Historic Jefferson Railway’s live steam train. Keep your seat on the train as you see history in action near the railroad track and see the gunboat engage in battle with the train. \nTake a step back in time as the Historic Jefferson Railway takes you on an excursion that circles the Piney Woods along the scenic Big Cypress Bayou. You’ll view a Confederate Powder Magazine from the Civil War era and remains of many sites from the 1800’s still visible along the track. The live steam train is a restored antique Crown Metals built in 1964. The open-canopied observation cars provide an excellent view of this exciting event along the river. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Reenactor Information & Contact”]\nOfficer’s Meeting: Diamond Don RV Park\, 1602 State Hwy 49 East\, at 3:30 on Friday\, May 5\, 2017 at Cleburne Camp Headquarters. Jim can be reached at 409-504-3001.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nAbout the Iron Clad used in Naval Battle Reenactment\nA small scale reproduction of one of the Iron Clad Boats; The Virginia has been built for a new Naval Battle Reenactment. This boat will fire on the troops on the shore along the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou. Troops will defend the passengers on the train during the reenactment of the Andrews Raid and locomotive chase\, while also defending the Port of Jefferson Texas. Once a very important Water Port in Texas. This boat was commissioned by the people of Jefferson’s Historic Train company to add one more element to the events of the season. \nHistory Behind the Reenactment\nThe Union mounted several attempts to capture the trans-Mississippi regions of Texas and Louisiana from 1862 until the war’s end. With ports to the east under blockade or captured\, Texas in particular became a blocking-running haven. Referred to as the “back door” of the Confederacy. Texas and western Louisiana continued to provide cotton crops shipped to Europe by means of blockade runners in exchange for supplies. The Union’s disastrous Red River Campaign in western Louisiana\, including a defeat at the Battle of Mansfield\, effectively ended the Union’s final invasion attempt of the region until the fall of the Confederacy. Had the Union soldiers not been stopped at Mansfield\, they would surely have been looking upriver to Jefferson\, a major river port of the time. Jefferson now takes that history and brings it to life each year. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Jefferson Civil War Days on the first full weekend of May in Jefferson\, Texas. \nTags: Jefferson Civil War Days\, Jefferson Texas Civil War Days\, Civil War Days\, Civil War Reenactment\, Naval Battle of Port Jefferson Reenactment\, Port Jefferson Naval Reenactment\, Jefferson Texas Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

Far different from the original mountain men rendezvous\, it was organized as a family event. Then called the Black Powder Rendezvous\, it was moderately successful\, attracting about 500 people. It was moved to its present location in 1986 due to the need for additional space and to take advantage of the natural beauty of the site a well as the traditional significance of the river in the lives of early settlers. \nThe first three rendezvous were sponsored and organized by the Hickory County Historical Society. During those years it grew tremendously\, both in scope and popularity. Due to this rapid growth and its increasing complexity\, a new organization\, the Pomme de Terre Rendezvous Association was formed to sponsor the event. The Rendezvous Association\, made up of local people and organizations interested in ensuring that area history is preserved. One way of doing so is through such annual events as the Pomme de Terre Rendezvous. In 2006\, the Hermitage Lions Club assumed the overall sponsorship of the event that is organized and operated by the Rendezvous Committee. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Pomme de Terre Rendezvous at Lake Outlet Park in Carson’s Corner\, Missouri. \n \nTags: Muzzleloader \, Pomme de Terre Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Pomme de Terre Voyageur Rendezvous\, Missouri Rendezvous\, Missouri Voyageur Rendezvous\, Missouri Mountain Man Rendezvous \nView other Fur-Trade-Era Rendezvous

The Corps of Discovery of St. Charles is an all-volunteer organization and there is no guarantee that there will be reenactors at the site at all times or that the site will be open to visit. If you are planning to make a trip to visit Camp DuBois you may want to schedule your trip on Wednesdays through Sundays when Camp River Dubois\, the Illinois State Historic Site located 4 miles south of Camp DuBois on Route 3\, is open and both sites can be visited. Camp River Dubois features another version of 1803-1804 winter encampment and features a Visitors Center with 4 galleries of exhibits and displays. Visitors and other groups wishing to visit Camp DuBois should call the Wood River Museum and Visitors Center at 618-254-1993 to ensure that the site will be open. There is no charge to visit Camp DuBois. \nAbout the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site\nThe Lewis and Clark State Historic Site (about 3 miles from Camp Dubois) commemorates the 1803-1804 winter camp of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It was at Camp Dubois that members of the Corps of Discovery prepared for their expedition to the Pacific Ocean. The 14\,000 square-foot exhibit space contains six galleries that outline the background and history of the Lewis and Clark expedition from its conception to its meaning for today’s America. Exhibits are kid-friendly\, offering opportunities for hands-on engagement. A “reconstruction” of the winter camp\, Camp Dubois\, is located on the grounds near the visitor center. Its design reflects 1803 U.S. Army regulations for the construction of military posts. Interpreters are on-site daily in the camp to explain how the men prepared for the journey. This is a ‘must see’ for folks that make it to the Camp Dubois Spring Rendezvous. \n \nMark your calendar so you don’t miss the next Camp Dubois Spring Rendezvous on the last weekend of October at Camp Dubois on the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Wood River\, Illinois. \nTags: Camp Dubois Spring Rendezvous\, Camp Dubois Rendezvous\, Camp Dubois Mountain Man Fall Rendezvous\, Illinois Mountain Man Rendezvous\, Illinois Rendezvous\, Wood River Rendezvous \nView other Illinois Rendezvous
